The D e t r o i t Area Study (DAS), a c o n t i n u i n g f a c i l i t y f o r g r a d u a t e t r a i n i n g and f a c u l t y r e s e a r c h , was e s t a b l i s h e d i n 1 9 5 1 a t The U n i v e r s i t y of Michigan. I n i t i a l s u p p o r t came from b e h a v i o r a l r e s e a r c h f u n d s g i v e n t o t h e U n i v e r s i t y by t h e Ford F o u n d a t i o n . S i n c e 1956 t h e U n i v e r s i t y h a s assumed p r i m a r y f i n a n c i a l r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r t h e DAS, w i t h s u p p l e m e n t a l f u n d i n g o b t a i n e d f r e q u e n t l y from o u t s i d e g r a n t s .

O b j e c t i v e s of t h e a e t r o i t Area Study
The t h r e e main o b j e c t i v e s of t h e D e t r o i t Area Study a r e : ( 1 ) t o t r a i n s t u d e n t s i n t h e methods of s u r v e y and r e l a t e d t y p e s of f i e l d r e s e a r c h i n tile s o c i a l s c i e n c e s , ( 2 ) t o s e r v e a s a m a j o r r e s o u r c e f o r b a s i c r e s e a r c h by t h e s o c i a l s c i e n c e s a t The U n i v e r s i t y of Plichigan, and ( 3 ) t o make s o c i a l s c i e n c e d a t a a v a i l a b l e t o G r e a t e r D e t r o i t a ~ l d t o o t h e r communities w i t h s i m i l a r i n t e r e s t s and problems.

Tile e n r o l l m e n t of i u t e r e s t e d g r a d u a t e s t u d e n t s i n psychology, p o l i t i c a l s c i e n c e , economics, s o c i a l work, and o t h e r r e l a t e d d i s c i p l i n e s i s a l s o encouraged and a d d s t o t h e i n t e r d i s c i p l i n a r y a p p r o a c h which DAS t r i e s t o promote.
