RAMBLINGS FROM FATHER MICHAEL(and Oscar!)

distributed in the usuaL fashion with a cross of ash placed on your foreheads. Instructions on the precise method of distribution will be given at each Mass. If there are attendees present who may be uncomfortable with coming forward to receive ashes, we will understand. The most important thing is that each of us becomes aware of our need for God’s mercy and for- giveness. The traditional disciplines of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving should be primary in our hearts and minds as we reflect on where our Lenten journey might take us this year.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fasting is to be observed on both days by all Catholics between the ages of 18 years and 59 years (inclusive). On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken ac- cording to each person’s needs. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent including Good Friday.

Our Respect Life coordinators, Bill and Sandy Palmer, have reminded me that our Forty Days For Life program begins on Ash Wednesday (February 17) and continues through March 28. This is time set aside every year when we are invited to focus on respect for all life from the moment of conception until natural death. This year, we are also doing outreach to Community Pregnancy Center, My Choice Pregnancy Center and Solve (A home for pregnant Teens). To that end, we have placed request cards on the Respect Life display in the main entrance to the church. If you would like to assist with our outreach, feel free to take one or more of the cards and return the gift when convenient, prior to March 28. We are grateful for any help you can give.

We’ve scheduled Stations of the Cross at the parish at 5:00pm every Friday during Lent. A wor- ship aid is being prepared which we ask you to take with you as you leave. The Stations of the Cross are a wonderful way to personally participate in and reflect on the final days of Jesus’ life.

Wishing everyone a blessed week and a holy Lenten Season.

Fr. Michael

May the peace, love and joy of the Lord Jesus be in each of your hearts and lives. Whatever your location, I hope and pray that my words are finding everyone healthy and well.

We are on the threshold of the Lenten Season. I’m not certain how that happened but the calendar doesn’t lie! Wednesday of this week opens the penitential season with the distribution of ashes, reminding each of us of our need for repentance. We will be offer- ing ashes at our three Masses which will be celebrated at 9:00am, 10:30am and 7:00pm. We are also holding a Liturgy of the Word Service with ashes at 12:00pm. Due to Covid-19, ashes will not be

WORD SERVICE (ASHES ONLY) MASS SCHEDULE

A Message From

St. Michael’S WoMen’S Guild

Before the SMWG’s monthly Mass last Monday, past President Brenda Higgins and the wom- en who served on the 2020 Fashion Show Committee, presented Fr. Michael Cannon with a check for $25,000 earmarked for the Capital Campaign for the new Parish Center.

You may recall that the arrival of the pandemic in March of 2020 forced us to cancel the 2020 Fashion Show just days before it was to occur.

After notice of the cancellation was announced at the weekend Masses, a vast majority of attendees gra- ciously offered their ticket money as a donation to the Capital Campaign.

The Guild wishes to acknowledge the generosity of these women.

With the support of the ticket purchasers, Fashion Show patrons, funds raised in the Cash Draw, and proceeds from the raffle of John Koen’s beautiful necklace, the Guild was able to reach our goal of $25,000. Our sincere thanks to all of our “benefactors.”

PARISH NEWS AND UPDATES

Due to the influx of visitors during Season and for the safety of the entire congregation, weekend Mass reservations are required to ensure proper distancing within the church.

This includes the following Masses:

Saturday 4:00 p.m. Sunday 8:00 a.m. Sunday 10:00 a.m.

Please call the parish office at (941) 349-4174 to make reservations.

Please note that parishioners who attend weekend Mass on a weekly basis will only need to call the parish office once to make an ongoing reservation.

Mass Reservations

On Friday February 19, we begin our weekly spiritual pilgrimage of the Sta- tions of the Cross which will take place every Friday throughout the Lenten Season. Through prayer and contempla- tion we stop at each of 14 stations to reflect on the suffering Jesus endured throughout His Passion.

The stations grew out of imitations of Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, believed to be the actual path Jesus walked, in ago- ny and humiliation, to Mount Calvary, where He died on the cross for our sins.

Join us every Friday at 5 p.m. during Lent for this most powerful devotion.

THE KIDS’CORNER

HAPPY

ST. VALENTINE’S DAY!

Every year on the 14th of February we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, but what do we actually know about the real St. Valentine, patron saint of love and marriage?

Saint Valentine was a priest who lived a long time ago when Claudi- us II was the ruler of Rome. Claudi- us II did not like Christians and he was known for sending his soldiers to fight in a lot of wars!

Claudius II thought having soldiers for his wars was so important that he made a law forbidding people from getting married. He believed that if young boys got married and had families they would not want to go off and fight in his wars.

This created a problem for Chris- tians who knew that God wanted them to worship Him, not the false gods of Claudius II. They also knew that God wanted them to get mar- ried and start families.

Saint Valentine had the special job of being God’s helper during this time. As a priest he would marry the men and women who wanted to get married and that is how he became the patron saint of love and marriage.

CAN YOU DRAW A PERFECT HEART?
