LATEST TRENDS

The ongoing eruption of the Icelandic volcano is currently making its impact felt on the European fish market. The cancellation of international flights is completely disrupting the provision of fresh fish species to the European market. In addition, the Brussels Seafood Exposition could also have difficulties, as many exhibitors may have problems in sending their products and their staff to Brussels. Prices are likely to be impacted, probably in both directions.

GROUNDFISH

Groundfish prices

went down in 2009 and early 2010, as a

result of good

supply and strong

competition from

whitefish species,

such as pangasius, on the market. The main issue in the early weeks of 2010

was how Russia

would deal with EU

regulations with

regard to IUU

fishing. For 6 weeks the country was not able to notify the EU

which authority

would carry out the certification in the Far Eastern region, Issue 04/2010

difficult. Russia is presently the main provider of this species to the European market. Since 19 February 2010, the Russia authorities have notified the EU which authorities will control the catch certifications, so everything should return to normal in

the coming months, although

landings made prior to 19 February by Russia are still not allowed to be imported into the EU.

FLATFISH A rise in demand prior to Easter

resulted in higher sales. Turbot prices rose as well although at different rates for different sizes. Smaller sized turbot prices increased more than the larger size classes. This is mainly because of good offers for large turbot while the availability of smaller turbot was somewhat reduced. Good demand levels are expected for the coming months so prices will maintain their upward trend.

TUNA

Exceptionally slow tuna fishing in the Western and Central Pacific combined with the aggressive selling of tuna products by Thai packers has caused a sharp increase in the price of tuna on the all important Bangkok market. Main size skipjack rebounded from USD 950 per tonnes for March to USD 1 150 per tonnes for April delivery. Cold storage stocks in Bangkok are being drawn down to cover the shortage of tuna being delivered by reefer carriers normally operating between the transhipment ports in the Western Pacific and Bangkok. The price is expected to continue to increase as packers attempt to build inventories of raw material in anticipation of the reduced fishing effort resulting from the three month fishing ban on Fish Aggregating Devices commencing 1 July in the Western and Central Pacific.

The Bangkok tuna market has ‘caught up’ with Ecuador where lower demand has allowed the price of tuna to stay between USD 1 150 and USD 1 200 per tonnes for skipjack in spite of skipjack landings being significantly lower than last year. According to the Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission, only about 30 000 tonnes of skipjack were caught during the first two months of 2010 in their commission area compared with over 47 000 tonnes in the same period last year.

Prices on the West Africa market continued to be the lowest for skipjack in the world at EUR 600 per tonnes, down from about EUR 670 per tonnes last month.

Yellowfin on the European market is becoming more expensive because of a reduction in supply resulting from the implementation of the EU’s new

catch documentation regulation.

Shipments of yellowfin have been suspended from those countries that do not yet have government agencies recognized by the EU as ‘competent authorities’ for purposes of certifying the source of the fish as required by the new regulations. The price of yellowfin 10 kg/up in the EU

increased to EUR 1 600 per tonne cif Spain from about EUR 1 450-1 500.

In the Seychelles the price of skipjack increased from about EUR 600 to about 700 per tonnes ex vessel for skipjack and yellowfin 10 kg/up increased from about EUR 1 200 per tonne to EUR 1 300 per tonne. The problem of piracy continues to influence the supply of tuna in this area.

CEPHALOPODS

The new squid season in Argentine waters has just begun. The first indications from there are that the 2010 season will be even worse than the 2009 season. As a result, supply to the European market is limited. As a consequence of the difficult economic situation in Spain and Italy, however, prices are unable to rise, although demand is reasonable. The improvement in demand and poor supplies from other areas have led to good shipment levels from South Africa.

CRUSTACEANS The US lobster season will get

underway in early May. Indications are that prices will be higher, as no old stocks are left. The parity between the Canadian dollar and the

US dollar makes exports from

Canada difficult.

Crab prices are quite high at the moment, but are expected to drop rapidly in April as demand declines.

SHELLFISH

Poor landings of bivalves because of difficult weather conditions resulted in good prices for the Easter sales despite the generally depressed demand. Prices of bottom mussels have improved slightly but demand remains weak. As already reported, bulk prices of Gigas oysters from France are up, in response to the mortalities during summer 2009.

SALMON An increasingly tight salmon market

has pushed prices higher. Norway’s harsh winter has slowed down growth rates with less salmon coming to market than expected for the period. Some unexpected help to consumers however has come from the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull, which has put an effective stop on fillet exports to the US with some more volumes therefore available for the European market in the short term. As a result, prices are softening a bit at the moment.

Norway’s first quarter salmon exports were up 23% in volume (round weight equivalent) and 37% in value to 215 000 tonnes and NOK 6.5 billion respectively. Strong growth was registered in particular for Poland, Russia and the US.

FRESHWATER FISH The Spanish market for freshwater

fish is favouring pangasius, sold at discounted prices, as demand is still

slow with the economy under

pressure. In contrast, in Italy, the demand for trout was strong and has been increasing for the past six months. This is also owing to good demand in Eastern Europe.

SEABASS AND SEABREAM

Seabass and seabream producers are looking more optimistically at the future as prices for both species have risen significantly, in particular for seabream which now is more expensive than bass. The reason for this is falling production compared with last year in all main

producing countries, including

Greece, Turkey and Spain. As a result prices to importers and wholesalers are rising and retailers are now passing the higher prices on to consumers. Demand is not bad except in Spain where the situation remains difficult for most products. Domestic demand is surprisingly strong in countries such as Turkey where the economic prospects for 2010 are positive.
