4. Pedagogical Innovations
Faculty Description of Pedagogical Innovation
Bertha K. Amisi Designing and delivering an Academic Writing course for DCRS
students. This course is offered for the first time by the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies. I developed a course syllabus in collaboration with the Dr. Robin Cooper. Dr. Cooper and Dr. Ismael Muvingi and I, selected the required texts for the course. I organized the course round revising a previous written assignment as a way for students to a) identify the extent to which they addressed the different aspects of academic writing learned, and b) use their learning to address problems identified. Students also studied two articles from Conflict Resolution Quarterly as a first step to their becoming familiar with academic writing styles in the field of conflict resolution. Students had numerous opportunities to share their work and provide constructive feedback. I created these opportunities with the intention for students to a) practice constructive critique using the vocabulary of academic writing and b) form writing groups that support their writing beyond the course.
Contributed to the development of a revised research design and program evaluation course. I initiated meetings with Dr. Mary Hope Schwoebel to collaborate on developing a new syllabus on research and program evaluation. The outcome was an agreement of the major themes to be addressed in the course.
Elena Bastidas Practicum Course on Conflict and International Development
Mark Cavanaugh Developed podcasts and technologically sophisticated video lectures for various online sociology courses. The videos integrate live lectures with original PowerPoint presentations (which are heavily animated).
Neil Katz Adapted Conflict Intervention course CARD 6639 to focus role of
Ombuds, including tools, techniques, and models, as well as a case study.
First to teach Capstone CARM 6450 GE1 – Masters students’
opportunity to bridge theory-and-practice by way of an independent Scholarship of Engagement Project that demonstrates competency in the areas of theory, research and methods (services).

4. Pedagogical Innovations
Faculty Description of Pedagogical Innovation
Flemons, Douglas Recorded a hypnosis demonstration with a
volunteer in front of the class during the first weeks of the semester for course on
Ericksonian Hypnotherapy (Systemic Family Therapy 4). Each class member was assigned a portion of the recording to transcribe,
employing the research methodology of Conversation Analysis. Once their detailed transcripts were accurate, the students uploaded them to a wiki on Blackboard; their combined efforts created a seamless document that accurately depicted the demonstration. For two of the four questions of the final exam for the course, students drew from the wiki to demonstrate their sophisticated understanding of the principles and methods of hypnosis. The
different facets of the assignment gave the students the opportunity to practice new skills as qualitative process researchers as they developed their expertise in hypnosis.

the health-related needs of all veterans with an emphasis on those returning OIF and OEF active duty soldiers, OIF/OEF veterans, their immediate families and loved ones of those who have served. More specifically, through this initiative, NSU’s Center for Veterans Assistance will address one of the primary challenges facing military families, and one of our four strategic priorities identified by the federal government: Enhancing the well-being and psychological health of the military family.
The proposed study will examine the impact of the Cognitive Information Processing (CIP) approach delivered through a career-counseling program for Operation Iraqi Freedom /Operation Enduring Freedom
veterans. The CIP
approach, which has been indicated as a promising method for career counseling with the veteran population, aims to address barriers to employment, reduce negative career thoughts, and enhance career decision making.
