Introduction to IDU GE 20x

Introduction

Eclipse has led the market for the transport of high speed native Ethernet data, plus native wayside TDM traffic, all with advanced Layer 2 features to deliver true Carrier-Class reliability and performance.

Now Eclipse delivers the same advanced Layer 2 features and high link throughput speeds in a compact and cost effective indoor unit, the IDU GE 20x.

Applications

The IDU GE 20x is designed for the following applications:

• Mobile network backhaul, supporting deployments of NxE1 base station connections for 2/2.5/3G traffic, with migration to all-Ethernet for next generation all-IP HSPA applications

• Enterprise applications requiring high speed Ethernet with or without wayside TDM traffic.

• High speed Carrier Ethernet transport for WiMAX backhaul networks.

Feature Summary

This new indoor unit supports the following features:

• Programmable link throughputs from 10 up to 360 Mbit/s;

• Native Ethernet data transport for high efficiency and very low latency; • Intelligent Layer 2 operation and features.

• Mixed-mode operation, supporting Ethernet plus native TDM traffic support, selectable from one to 20x E1 channels;

• Selectable channel bandwidths from 3.5 to 56 MHz;

• The choice of modulation schemes to maximize system performance for longer links and/or smaller antennas, or to minimize frequency requirements to save on licensing costs;

• Two 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet electrical ports

• One optional SFP port for either 1000Base-X Optical or 1000Base-T electrical Gigabit Ethernet;

• VLAN, Link Aggregation, and Jumbo Frame support;

• Protected hot standby configuration with errorless space diversity switching; • 1RU in height and ETSI half-rack compliant (240mm deep);

• Compatible over-the-air with the INU/INUe (DAC GE/ES and DAC 4/16x), and IDU ES and IDU 20x indoor units.

The IDU GE 20x improves on the functionality offered by the existing Eclipse Ethernet IDU ES, by increasing the number of wayside channels offered from 8 to 20, adding protection/diversity support, Layer 2 Ethernet features and increasing the maximum throughput from 200 up to 360 Mbit/s.

Capacity and Throughput Options

IDU GE 20x throughput capacity can be assigned to TDM-only up to 20xE1, Native Ethernet from 10 to 360 Mbit/s, or as mixed-mode combination of native NxE1 and Ethernet, all through software control (subject to the installed capacity license). Figures 1 and 2 below show the capacity/bandwidth options for Ethernet and TDM link configurations.

For mixed-mode applications, link capacity shown in Figure 1 can be incrementally assigned to NxE1 TDM channels, where N can be between 1 and 20.

Capacity Licensing

The IDU GE 20x maximum available capacity throughput is subject to a license scheme, with the following license breaks:

• TDM-Only - Base license TDM-only up to 20xE1 (included as standard) • 50Mbit/s - Ethernet + up to 20xE1 TDM, up to 50 Mbit/s total throughput • 100Mbit/s - Ethernet + up to 20xE1 TDM, up to 100 Mbit/s total throughput • 150Mbit/s - Ethernet + up to 20xE1 TDM, up to 150 Mbit/s total throughput • 200Mbit/s - Ethernet + up to 20xE1 TDM, up to 200 Mbit/s total throughput • 360Mbit/s - Ethernet + up to 20xE1 TDM, up to 360 Mbit/s total throughput Ethernet throughputs indicated are nominal. Actual throughput will vary depending on modulation/channel bandwidth option selected

The Capacity License is included with the IDU GE 20x at time of order (refer to part numbers described below), or can be increased any time by ordering a SW upgrade license to download.

Front Panel Layout and Physical Interfaces

Figure 3 below shows the IDU GE 20x front panel layout and interfaces available.

GigE SFP Options

The SFP (compliant with the MSA Small Form Pluggable specification) is a modular customer interface that can be equipped with an optional hot-pluggable optical or electrical GigE interface. The base IDU GE 20x configuration has the SFP module unequipped.

The following plug-in options are available:

• Electrical. 1000BASE-X without clock, with 1000BASE-X auto-negotiation to copper. Compatible with CAT 5 cable up to 100 meters in length. RJ45 connector.

• Optical. 1000BASE-LX 1310nm Single-mode Transceiver. Duplex LC connector.

Auxiliary Functions and Interfaces

The following auxiliary interfaces are provided • One V.24 maintenance port, RJ45 connector. • Two 10/100Base-T NMS ports, 2xRJ45 connectors

• Protection (or expansion) port to interconnect protected IDUs, RJ45 connector • Fuse and -48V Power Supply Connector, D-Sub style

• N-Type antenna connector for ODU

• AUX Alarm, standard DB15 high density connector

Layer 2 Features

The IDU GE 20x incorporates a Layer 2 Ethernet switch that supports intelligent quality of service controls and traffic management features, including:

• Flow control operation;

• Jumbo frame size ≤ 9600 bytes;

• MAC address table with up to 8000 entries. The MAC address table can be disabled for full transparency;

• Full RMON performance monitoring function;

• Transparent VLAN and mixed mode extended to five ports (3 front panel ports plus 2 transport channels over the airlink);

• VLAN tagging;

• Four level QOS based on 802.1q and/or DiffServ.

Eclipse ODU Support

The IDU GE 20x can be used with any Eclipse ODU:

• ODU300sp – for cost effective solutions up to 80 Mbit/s throughput. • ODU300hp – for high performance, high speed applications up to full rated

360Mbit/s throughput and 256QAM modulation.

• ODU300ep – for extended performance operation in 5, 13 and 15GHz bands.

Protected Configurations

The IDU GE 20x adds protection and diversity configurations to cost-effective Ethernet links. A protected terminal is created by adding a second IDU and interconnecting the two IDUs with a protection cable.

TDM traffic is fully protected down to the line interface. Similarly to the IDU 20x, a single protected E1 interface is presented by using Y-cables.

For Ethernet traffic, the initial release (4.2 software) of the IDU GE 20x will support a single Ethernet interface. This means that the customer Ethernet traffic will be connected to one of the IDUs.

Later releases of Eclipse software will add additional Ethernet protection modes, such as dual-feed and Optical Y-cable support.

Availability

Initial shipments of the IDU GE 20x will commence in November 2007 to coincide with the Eclipse 4.2 software.

This release will include software that supports most capacity/modulation options. Ethernet throughputs >200Mbit/s will not initially be available in the 4.2 software. These will be added in 4.3 software planned for release in February/March 2008. To check on the availability of specific capacity/modulation options please contact

Mechanical

The IDU GE 20x is designed to comply with ETSI half-rack requirements which is often specified by customers, as detailed by ETS 300 119, resulting in a reduced rack depth of 240mm (9.4 inches).

Eclipse Connect

The IDU GE 20x will be added to the Eclipse Connect solution. This will augment to the current IDU ES solution, which will be retained for lower-cost non-protected-only, Fast Ethernet applications up to 200Mbit/s.

The IDU GE 20x will be the solution for enhanced functionality such as

protection/diversity, >8xE1 TDM interfaces, higher throughput speeds >200Mbit/s, Carrier-Class Layer 2 Ethernet features, Jumbo Frame support, and GigE interfaces. Table 1 below summarizes the choices between the two IDU options.

Appendix 1. Ethernet Modes

Non-protected Ethernet Modes

A non-protected IDU GE 20x will support all normal Ethernet modes - Transparent, Mixed and VLAN.

These modes are compatible with the DAC GE modes.

Protected Ethernet Modes

The IDU GE 20x will support Transparent Ethernet mode and two additional Ethernet modes when it is in Ethernet Single Feed protection mode.

The additional modes are ‘Bridged Mixed VLAN’ and ‘Bridged VLAN’ are not

compatible with DAC GE modes, since the protected IDU GE 20x system may only be linked to another protected IDU GE 20x system, and not to an INU.

Both Primary and Secondary IDU must be configured to use the same Ethernet mode.

All of these modes require an Ethernet cable between Ethernet Port 2 of both IDUs (in addition to the protection cable and the NMS Ethernet cable).
