The Library as YOUR Research Partner

Grant Writing Workshop for Faculty/Staff

January 12, 2016

Thank you for inviting me to talk about the Library as your research partner today. I see the program today starting by dispelling some myths about grants. I’d like to start my presentation by dispelling another myth – the library doesn’t just exist to serve students, we are here to serve you, too. We can be YOUR research partner, and I’m going to share with you some of the ways we can do it. My presentation will have 3 parts. First I will talk about some traditional library services. Some you may already use, others may be new to you. Next I will talk about Managing your research identity. Finally, I will touch on Publishing your results.

Need to find resources?

•Library home page

The library home page is a good place to start your research. You can find us from two places on the college’s

homepage, either from the Quick Links, or in the Academics tab. Our page has 4 tabs across the top. I’m going to focus on the first two: FIND and SERVICES. In the FIND tab you will find links to more in-depth search options, as well as a link to Digital Collections including Digital Commons and Research Guides. SERVICES include Interlibrary Loan, Digital Commons, Research

Appointment and Faculty & Staff support.

Individual Research Consultations

•Research Appointment

under Services tab

•Brockport’s Databases

•Literature Review

•Help with publishing options

Feel free to set up an individual research appointment for in-depth discussion with a librarian. We can help you work with the databases we

subscribe to (which may be different than those of your previous institution), suggest strategies, and help with your Literature Review. Once your grant funded research is complete, we can help you find publishing options (show Cabell’s in A-Z list).

Slide 4

Faculty & Staff Support

•Interlibrary Loan – resources we don’t own. Will also scan from print journals we do have.

•Zotero– amazing free program for citation management. Use it to gather and organize your pdfs. Attach notes and create bibliographies in a number of styles.

Once you’ve found the resources you need, Interlibrary loan can get them for you, and Zotero can help you manage them.

Zotero – similar to End Note or RefWorks, which you may have used before.

Very simple procedure to be able to link all research, grants, etc. done by your person, whatever your name was at the time. NSF has started to ask for it on grants, as well as publishers such as IEEE and Science.

Query how many people are familiar with these. Most with LinkedIN, fewer with other options. Show JJ’s bepress profile, with links to her ORCID and Google Scholar profiles.

Slide 7 Briefly touch on Digital Commons, and

the various ways it supports grants (CMST, Rochester Reform Trail, technical reports, final grant reports, published articles). Mention

AuthorDashboard.
