Installation of Windows XP 32 or 64

This guide is for experienced PC users only. You must have knowledge of

 installing and configuring operating systems  installing software

 installing networks  working with PCs

 working with files and software

This chapter describes how to install and configure Windows XP for use with the T-Scan system.

4.1

Installation of Windows XP 19” PC

1. Create RAID Driver floppy

2. Install Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2 Multilingual on your computer (boot from CD). Press “F6” to use special drivers and insert floppy “RAID Driver” (use a USB disk drive, if necessary).

3. Use NTFS partition “C:” (size: approx. 80 GB), create NTFS partition “D:” (size: remaining space)

4. On page “Regional and Language Options”, continue by pressing Next

5. On page “Personalize Your Software”, type Name: T-Scan,

Organization: Steinbichler Optotechnik

6. On page “Product Key” enter the product key which is located on a label attached to the front door of the PC

7. On page “Computer Name and Administrator Password”, type Computer Name: T-SCAN

Administrator password: Administrator

8. On page “Date and Time Settings”, adjust Date & Time as well as Time Zone 9. On page “Network Settings”, choose Typical Settings

10. On page “Workgroup or Computer Domain” chose, No, this computer is not on a network, […]. Make this computer a member of the following group: and enter WORKGROUP

Windows will restart

11. For Windows 32 Bit, select “Help protecting my PC turning on Automatic Updates” 12. For Windows 32 Bit, on page “Who will use this computer”, type

Your name: TScan

Do not create other users.

13. For Windows XP32, install all languages from all four Windows XP Professional Multilingual CDs;

15. For Windows 64 Bit, install language support for German, Japanese, Italian, French and Spanish.

16. Quick format drive D:\

17. Start  Settings  Control Panel  System  Advanced  Startup and Recovery  Settings  Edit. Add the option /noserialmice and for XP32 /3GB.

For example: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x32 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB /noserialmice

4.2

Installation of Drivers for 19” PC

1. Change BIOS boot sequence  Hard Disk boots before CD Drive

2. Install Asus Drivers according to screenshot (install drivers automatically):

4. Serial Extension Card

Start  Settings  Control Panel  System  Hardware Device Manager 5. Select “Other Device”, “PCI Serial”, right click  Update Driver, follow installation

steps. Do not use the original CD, it contains old drivers. Use the drivers on the T-Scan CD instead (Drivers\VSCOM). After recognizing the new hardware Windows will invoke several installation processes. Execute each installation process.

6. Install PNY Nvidia Quadro Driver. 7. Install latest Direct X.

8. Install Drivers for Ethernet cards

4.3

Installation Windows XP64 Dell M6400 Laptop

1. BIOS Settings: System Configuration -> SATA Operation -> AHCI

2. Install Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2 Multilingual on your computer (boot from CD, press F6 for additional drivers). You will need the driver R207269 extracted to a floppy disk and also an usb flobby drive (temporary), select ‘ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller’

3. Agree to License Agreement

4. Use complete Partition C to install Windows

5. Format Partition (if necessary) with NTFS file system 6. Regional settings, keep defaults

7. Enter name ‘T-Scan’, organisation ‚Steinbichler Optotechnik GmbH’ 8. Enter product key.

9. Computer name ‘T-SCAN-M6400’, Administrator password ‘Administrator’. 10. Date & Time settings, adjust timezone +1 Amsterdam…

11. Networking Settings ‘Typical settings’ 12. Keep ‘Workgroup’

13. After Installation log on as ‘Administrator’.

14. Create user account ‘TScan’, type ‘Administrator’ 15. Log of and log on as ‘TScan’, reboot computer

16. Install additional languages ‘german’, ‘japanese’, do not ‘Match the language for non-Unicode…’, reboot computer

4.4

Installation of Drivers for Dell M6400, Windows XP64

Click the exe file. The file will self extract and automatically start installation routines.

9. Install the USB to serial adapter (Digitus), set com port to ‘com4’.

Activate and Update Windows

Connect the pc / laptop to a network with internet connection. Activate this copy of windows by clicking on the ‘keys’ symbol in the symbol bar. Just activate windows, do not register. Update Windows: Start  Windows Update

Configuration of Windows XP 32 or 64

Be sure to be logged on as user ‘TScan’. If not log off and log on as user ‘TScan’.

5.1

Folder view options

Configure folder view options:

Start the explorer, Select Tools  Folder options  View, then adjust settings according to the screenshots:

 Disable “Hide extensions for known file types”  Disable “Use simple file sharing (Recommended)”  Enable “Show hidden files and folders”

5.2

Sounds

1. Copy files from “System\Sounds” from T-Scan Installation Disk to “C:\Windows\Media” 2. Assign sounds for Asterisk, Critical Stop, Exclamation and Question (Start  Settings

 Control Panel  Sounds and Audio Devices  Sounds)

5.3

Access rights to Steinbichler program folder

1. Create a folder ‘c:\program files (x86)\Steinbichler’ on Windows XP64 and a folder ‘c:\program files\Steinbichler’

2. Enable Full Control for group “Users (T-SCAN\Users)” for C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinbichler\ and C:\Program Files\Steinbichler\and subdirectories (Folder Properties  Security)

3. Create a folder:

i. Collect 9 or newer version

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Steinbichler\T-SCAN\Calibration

ii. Collect 8 and sooner versions

%CommonProgramFiles%\Steinbichler\Calibration

(e.,g. %CommonProgramFiles% = C:\Program Files\Common Files\ for english OS)

4. Enable Full Control for group “Users (T-SCAN\Users)” for the following folder and subdirectories (Folder Properties  Security):

i. Collect 9 or newer version

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Steinbichler ii. Collect 8 and sooner versions

5.4

Network configuration for Controllers

1. Configure Network for Scanner Controller:

Start  Settings  Control Panel  Network And Internet Connections  Network Connections: Turn the scanner controller off and on to find out to which LAN

connection it uses when you are not sure. Rename the network connection to “Scanner Controller”. Open Properties for this connection and adjust settings according to the screenshots:

(IP address: 10.168.2.201, Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0)

2. Configure Network for Leica controller:

Start  Settings  Control Panel  Network And Internet Connections  Network Connections: Turn the Leica controller on and off to find out which LAN connection it uses (typically Local Area Connection 1). Rename the network connection to “Leica Controller”. Open Properties for this connection and adjust settings according to screenshots:

3. Configure Firewall:

Start  Settings  Control Panel  Security Center  Firewall. Disable the Firewall for the network connection “Leica Controller” and the network connection “Scanner

Controller.

4. Change hosts file:

Open file C:\Windows\system32/drivers/etc/hosts with an editor and append the following line:

5.5

Files, registry and environment settings

These steps are only necessary (and required) if you use a T-Scan scanner controller with revision 1.3 or higher (the scanner controller does not have a hard disk but uses FTP to access files). You can find the T-Scan scanner controller revision on a label behind the front lid of the scanner controller. If your revision is lower than 1.3 you should skip this.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Services\Tcpip\Parameters and create a new DWORD value “TcpTimedWaitDelay”. Set the Value to 5 and restart the system.

Filezilla

5. After the installation has completed, the Connect to Server window will open, use the settings in the following screenshot to connect (password: Administrator):

5.7

Installation Tera Term

Tera Term is a freeware software which is used to communicate via the serial port with the T-Scan scanner controller.

1. Insert the installation CD into the CD drive. Start CD drive\Tools\TeraTerm, start the setup program, install with default settings.

2. Remove write protection from configuration file “C:\Program

Files\ttermpro\teraterm.ini” (“C:\Program Files (x86)\ttermpro\teraterm.ini” for Windows 64 Bit).

4. Store the configuration with “Setup  Save Setup”; overwrite the default configuration file “teraterm.ini”.

5. Create a desktop shortcut to “Tera Term Pro” and rename it as “Scanner Controller”. 6. Enable this shortcut for all users. To do so, move the shortcut to “C:\Documents and

Settings\All Users\Desktop”.

5.8

Scanner Controller folder

To install the scanner calibration files proceed as follows:

1. Copy the files S[SN].ASC, S[SN].INI, S[SN].LCC, CONFIG.INI, and SCANNER.INI to

C:\ScannerController\Cal.

2. Copy the *.mtx files to

i. Collect 9 or newer version, Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Steinbichler\T-SCAN\Calibration

ii. Collect 8 and sooner versions

%CommonProgramFiles%\Steinbichler\Calibration

(e.g. %CommonProgramFiles% = C:\Program Files\Common Files) Install the system specific files (e. g. tracker files, …)

The specific scanner and camera files need to be saved in the directory C:\Installation as backup.

5.9

Set Default User Profile

Copy your current user profile to the Default User Profile (see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article – 319974, How To Create a Custom Default User Profile). This will make sure that new users have the same, customized user profile.

It can be that you cannot create such a copy if you have previously been logged in as user. To avoid this, temporarily set a password for the user T-SCAN, when rebooting, log in as Administrator directly. Copy the Profile. After that, reset the password for the user T-SCAN.

Additional software

1. Install additional software for DVD writing if included. 2. Install latest Adobe Acrobat Reader

System Backup

After you configured the system for a specific configuration, you should make a specific system backup.

6.1

Folder view options

Configure folder view options:

Start the explorer, Select Organize  Folder and search options  View, then adjust settings according to the screenshots:

 Enable “Show hidden files, folders, and drives”  Disable “Hide extensions for known file types”  Disable “Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended)”

Network configuration for Controllers

1. Configure Network for Scanner Controller:

Start  Control Panel  Network And Sharing Center  Change adapter settings: Turn the scanner controller off and on to find out to which LAN connection it uses when you are not sure. Rename the network connection to

“Scanner Controller”. Open Properties for this connection and adjust settings according to the screenshots:

Files, registry and environment settings

These steps are only necessary (and required) if you use a T-Scan scanner controller with revision 1.3 or higher (the scanner controller does not have a hard disk but uses FTP to access files). You can find the T-Scan scanner controller revision on a label behind the front lid of the scanner controller. If your revision is lower than 1.3 you should skip this.

1. Create directories:

Create a directory C:\ScannerController and three subdirectories Cal, Log and Sys

2. Enable Full Control for group “Users (T-SCAN\Users)” for folder C:\ScannerController and subdirectories:

3. Adjust Registry with RegEdit: Start  Run…  regedit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Services\Tcpip\Parameters and create a new DWORD value “TcpTimedWaitDelay”. Set the Value to 5 and restart the system.

Installation Tera Term

Tera Term is a freeware software which is used to communicate via the serial port with the T-Scan scanner controller.

1. Insert the installation CD into the CD drive. Start CD drive\Tools\TeraTerm, start the setup program, install with default settings.

2. Remove write protection from configuration file “C:\Program Files\teraterm\teraterm.ini” (“C:\Program Files (x86)\teraterm\teraterm.ini” for Windows 64 Bit).

3. Start  All Programs  Tera Term Pro  Tera Term Pro, change settings:

4. Store the configuration with “Setup  Save Setup”; overwrite the default configuration file “teraterm.ini”.

5. Create a desktop shortcut to “Tera Term Pro” and rename it as “Scanner Controller”. 6. Enable this shortcut for all users. To do so, move the shortcut to “C:\Documents

and Settings\All Users\Desktop”.

Scanner Controller folder

To install the scanner calibration files proceed as follows:

1. Copy the files S[SN].ASC, S[SN].INI, S[SN].LCC, CONFIG.INI, and SCANNER.INI to

C:\ScannerController\Cal.

2. Copy the *.mtx files to

i. Collect 9 or newer version, Windows 7

C:\ProgramData\Steinbichler\T-SCAN\Calibration ii. Collect 8 and sooner versions

%CommonProgramFiles%\Steinbichler\Calibration

(e.g. %CommonProgramFiles% = C:\Program Files\Common Files) Install the system specific files (e. g. tracker files, …)

The specific scanner and camera files need to be saved in the directory C:\Installation as backup.

6.9

Use Non-Aero Theme

Some minor dialogs in Collect software (e.g. the 3 Planes Dialog) do not work properly when Aero is used. Therefore it is recommended to use a non-Aero Theme

Exclude the LAN ports used for Tracker and Scanner Controller from the profile used in the Firewall (most likely the Public Profile)

Start  Control Panel  Windows Firewall  Advanced settings  Action  Properties. Disable (uncheck box) the Firewall for the network connection “Leica Controller” and the network connection “Scanner Controller in tab

i. Domain Profile  Protected network connections  Customize

ii. Private Profile  Protected network connections  Customize

iii. Public Profile  Protected network connections  Customize

6.12

Set Default User Profile

Copy your current user profile to the Default User Profile (see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article – 319974, How To Create a Custom Default User Profile). This will make sure that new users have the same, customized user profile.

Changing the Language Used for Menus and

Dialog Boxes

You can find more information on changing the language used for menus and dialog boxes in Windows Help (Start  Help and Support  Customizing your computer  Date, time, region and language  Region and language).
