The Association of American International Colleges and Univer-sities (AAICU) was founded in 1971 as a leadership organization representing American institutions of higher education over-seas. These colleges and universities are among America’s most important cultural and educational assets throughout the world. Conditions for full membership to AAICU include institutional autonomy, an independent board of trustees and accreditation by a major recognized U.S. accrediting authority.

AAICU institutions provide privileged spaces of intellectual interchange, academic freedom and responsibility, where inde-pendent learning and democratic values are allowed to flourish. Its graduates are thus prepared for the rapidly changing needs of the 21st century.

In addition to educating the future leaders in their host coun-tries, AAICU institutions also provide thousands of American students with the critically needed skills required for U.S. global competence. While students are offered programs in the histo-ries, cultures and languages of the host counthisto-ries, they are also provided much more: an ability to understand and appreciate other cultures, and an opportunity to develop relationships with people from different countries that will serve the United States well as it seeks to forge global partnerships.

AAICU institutions have strong roots in their respective host countries and enjoy wide recognition in their international settings. They are therefore capable of bridging cultures and fostering dialogue among nations within the framework of the American liberal arts tradition. They are both expressions of and vehicles for the growing international acceptance of the U.S. system of higher education and the increasing importance of En-glish as the language of international communication. In the con-temporary knowledge-driven world, with its global economy and trans-border social issues, they play a crucial role in establishing, embodying and verifying standards of educational excellence.

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA

The American University of Nigeria was created in response to the demand for high-quality, American-style higher education in West Africa. Each year, thou

-sands of West African families send their sons and daughters to universities in the United States and elsewhere internationally. Many of these students would prefer to study, in Nigeria, if a comparable education were available. Now these students do have an option: AUN.

The mission of AUN is to offer an education that is in every way the equal of what a student would experience at the better universities in the United States. The majority of the distinguished faculty are American or American educated; the campus facilities are world class--superior even to those found at many American campuses. The academic programs are built on the American model and are consistent in with US accreditation standards.

The University was created in partnership with the American University in Washington, D.C., an institution with an international reputation for excellence. AUN provides a broad liberal arts education while also meeting the professional aspirations of students and the demand by local and international employers for highly trained svtaff. All students, regardless of academic specialty, receive extensive training in information technology. Upon arrival, every student receives a laptop computer, complete with essential software. Wireless, high-speed Internet access is available everywhere on campus. Every student learns the principles of entrepreneurship so that, regardless of major, he or she will be prepared to achieve personal prosperity and to contribute to the economic development of the region.
