Instruction covers
This instruction covers eFreight, eAWB and Single Process shipments and procedures. E-Freight means fully paper free supply chain, including forwarding documents (invoice, packing list, house air waybills and so on) and customs documents. eAWB is paper free air waybill. Single Process is paper AWB free cargo acceptance. Airline will take care of AWB print out when needed.
Vocabulary
eFreight is paper free airfreight supply chain eAWB is electronic air waybill
Single Process paper free acceptance to terminal FWB is air waybill message
FHL is house air waybill message
Pouch is envelope for other documents, e.g. invoices, packing list, house air waybills,
etc.
FOH is Freight On Hand message, when shipment is delivered to the terminal, but is not yet accepted as “ready for carriage” shipments.
RCS is Ready For Carriage confirmation message and it also validate eAWB agreement
between forwarding agent and airline.
ECC is special handling code for eAWB shipment. Used by airline. EAP is special handling code for eAWB shipment which include pouch
EAW is special handling code for eAWB shipment. Used by forwarding agent.
Requirements to start
1. Own process support paperless AWBs
2. IATA’s Multilateral eAWB Agreement is signed and Activation Notice from the airline is valid. Finnair will check your message quality before you are allowed to remove paper AWB.
3. Air waybill data is sent to the airline via SITA Cargo IMP message (FWB) or via Finnair’s web portal
4. Bring shipment to the terminal
Finnair procedure for Single Process
Finnair will take care of paper AWB print out when destination requires it at Helsinki HUB.
If whole Finnair route is paper free then shipment will travels to the destination without paper AWB. In this case please let the consignees to know that shipment is paperless. You can check status of Finnair destination with IATA’s Matchmaker web tool:
Finnair is not able to print out carbon copy air waybills. If it is required for the shipment please print it out by yourself.
The procedure may vary airline by airline. That is why you should check the situation from each airline.
Booking
eAWB doesn’t affect for shipments booking. It will be done as nowadays e.g. via phone call, via FFR message or using Finnair eBooking web tool.
Message options
FWB message is mandatory for eAWB. It has to be sent to airline before shipment is delivered to the terminal. Without FWB message shipment will not get RCS status. It also validates eAWB Multilateral Agreement.
IATA EDI Cargo IMP messages
The best way to provide information to Finnair is to use Cargo IMP messages. FWB message is for air waybill and FHL for house air waybill. Finnair will check your message quality and will give you “Activation Notice” which allows to using eAWBs.
Finnair web portal (eBooking)
If forwarding agent is not able to send Cargo IMP messages then it is possible to use Finnair’s web portal. It is free for our customers, but you have to get username and password for it. You can send request to
[email protected]. And in general we recommend get access to the
web portal for discrepancy situations, e.g. your own system is down or message broker have some problems. It is good and free backup.
XML messages
At the moment Finnair will not support XML messages. Our estimation for implementation is at the end of this year. We will let you know as soon as we have the exact set up day.
Message requirements
Finnair recommends to uses FWB version 16 or 17, but we are able to accept also lower versions. For FHL our recommendation is version 4. FWB message have to include same information as paper AWB. And incomplete messages will stop shipments and it will wait until information is corrected. Forwarding agent can correct information with sending new FWB until shipment is got RCS status. After that please take contact your local Finnair representative.
Special Handling Codes for eAWB
eAWB shipment have to include some of the following SPH code: EAW this is for totally paper free shipment (no Pouch)
ECC this is for totally paper free shipment (no Pouch). For airline use, but we will accept this also.

Please do not attach AWB copy to the pouch. And if possible try to transfer other documents in e-mode.
Long addresses
If shipper’s or consignee’s address is over 35 characters when using FWB version 16 or lower then add missing information to handling info. And use same method with version FWB 17 when address is over 70 characters.
Exceptions
There are a few exceptions for paper free shipments.
Bank shipments aka ”Letter of Credit” shipments
IATA is working with Letter of Credit issue, but so far those shipments will include paper AWB.
Classic neutral AWB aka carbon copy AWB
If destination requires neutral series AWB (carbon copy AWB) then it have to be delivered by forwarding agent. Finnair is not able to print out neutral AWB. The most common case is if shipment will cross Chinese border by road.
