Cabot (also called Giovanni Caboto) reached Newfoundland in __________. • When he returned to England he told stories about. so many fish that all you had to do was put a basket in the water and you would fill it with fish  In. Europe fish was a very important food source. • Because of this, the fisherman were interested and. many set sail for this new land filled with fish • Soon, there were hundreds of fishing ships in the waters off the coast of Newfoundland.

(21) New Found Land  Cabot. did claim “New Found Land” for Britain but the British did not really want the land • They felt that the _____________________and the soil. was no good for farming. All they wanted was the _________________.  Because. of this, there was no resources for any ________________ in New Found Land and most fishers just stayed on their ships, filling them up with fish and then sailing away back to Europe..

(22) New Found Land . . However, as time went on, and the fish industry off the coast increased, fisherman started using the land to dry the fish. There were competition for the best harbors and areas to dry the fish. • To keep these areas, fisherman started staying behind. during the winter to guard the areas that their crew used.. . . Over time, the number of newcomers to Newfoundland grew. This caused George II, the king, to grant permission to build _________________on the coast of Newfoundland. This often meant going hungry in the summer..

(25) The Beothuk (bay-AH-thuk)  When. the British left for the winter, the Beothuk would raid their fishing stations and steal hooks, ropes and other supplies.  When the British returned in the summer, they would find their stuff gone and be angry with the First Nations people.  This led to great hostility and the British would eventually start to hunt the Beothuk with guns, killing many men, women and children.  The British also brought diseases (unintentionally) that killed many Beothuks..

(26) The Beothuk (bay-AH-thuk)  By. 1828, 330 years after Cabot arrived, only one Beothuk remained.  Her name was Shanawdithit  She died in 1829 of Tuberculosis.  Before she died many people became interested in her culture and she tried to answer the questions by drawing pictures to show what the Beothuk were like..
