About de Souza Institute:
In 2008, the Ontario government funded de Souza Institute to support nurses that care for cancer patients and their families. In 2013, de Souza Institute expanded its mandate to include other health care professionals. Through de Souza Institute, health care professionals obtain the specialized skills to guide and help cancer patients throughout their journey (prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliation). de Souza Institute courses are off ered primarily online with the occasional course through webcast or in-person.
de Souza Institute is pleased to partner with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Cancer Care Ontario and University Health Network to off er the best continuing education in cancer and palliative care.

What is a de Souza Designation?
The de Souza Designation is the latest standard in cancer care nursing excellence. Nurses with the de Souza Designation are recognized by employers, patients and families, policymakers and the public as well-regarded health care professionals possessing strong communication and leadership skills. They are also known as lifelong learners providing nursing excellence in psychosocial care.
The designations are open to all nurses across Canada that care for patients with or at risk of developing cancer. Once a designation is achieved, nurses are expected to maintain their designation through ongoing professional education and practice. Below are details on each designation:
de Souza Designations for Nurses
de Souza Intern
For undergraduate nursing students withan interest in oncology and/or hospice palliative care
Earning a de Souza Intern Designation requires:
•
Obtaining a total of 2.0 credits; by completing at least one course from each of the four domains of practice•
Passing the Foundations in Oncology Nursing Practice course•
Completion of the clinical placement in an area of practice that provides cancer or hospice palliative care•
Successful completion of an undergraduate RN BScN program, and have a valid licence issued by the provincial/territorial RN regulatory bodyde Souza Nurse Associate
Earning a de Souza Nurse Associate Designation requires:
•
Obtaining a total of 4.0 credits; by completing at least one course from each of the four domains of practice•
Passing the Foundations in Oncology Nursing Practice course and/or the Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapycourse
•
At least one year (1950 hours) of continuous clinical experience•
Having current registration and being in good standing with the College of Nurses in your province or territoryFor RNs or RPNs, not specialized in oncology or hospice palliative care, but are caring for patients with or at risk of developing cancer, or providing palliative

de Souza Nurse
Earning a de Souza Nurse Designation requires:
•
Obtaining a total of 4.0 credits; by completing at least one course from each of the four domains of practice•
Passing the Foundations in Oncology Nursing Practice course and/or the Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapycourse

Completion of a 75 hour clinical fellowship•
Certifi cation in oncology or hospice palliative care by CNA, CPHON or ONCC•
At least one year (1950 hours) of continuous clinical experience•

de Souza APN
Earning a de Souza APN Designation requires:

Earning a de Souza Scholar Designation requires:

Publication in a peer-reviewed journal within the four domains of practice•
Receive grant funding in research, education or leadership in Oncology or Hospice Palliative Care•
Having current registration and being in good standing with the College of Nurses in your province or territoryFor nurses pursuing a Post-Doctorate or PhD in an oncology or hospice palliative

Advanced Pain Assessment and Management
Participants will learn the pathophysiology of cancer pain, cancer pain syndromes, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for intractable pain in palliation and how to conduct educational and advocacy work.

Donalda MacDonald
Donalda has been an oncology nurse for 40 years, working in both inpatient and outpatient units. For the last 25 years she was a primary nurse in lung and GI oncology as well as working in the chemotherapy suite. For the last 10 years of her clinical career, she has been the solo instructor for the Sinai C.A.R.E. Cancer Care education series that she and her chemo colleagues developed targeting nurses new to oncology. In 2008, Donalda was nominated by her oncology peers and was one of 100 nurses from across Canada to receive the CNA Centennial Award honoring her work in education of novice oncology nurses. In 2014, she was again honoured by receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from CANO.
Komal Patel
Komal began her nursing career at William Osler Health System in Brampton, Ontario in 2006 on an in-patient oncology unit. Komal holds a BScN (Honours) from the University of Windsor and an MN with a teaching focus from Athabasca University. She obtained her Oncology CNA certifi cation in 2010, Hospice Palliative Care CNA certifi cation in 2012 and her de Souza APN Designation in 2013.
Maureen Watt-Smit
Maureen has been in nursing for over 20 years, and has worked in a variety of settings including community, ER, and ICU prior to moving to oncology at Grand River Hospital/Grand River Regional Cancer Centre in Kitchener in 2003. Her initial focus in oncology was in the outpatient clinics as a Supportive Care Coordinator. Maureen started working part-time in 2012 as a de Souza educator. Maureen graduated from the Registered Nursing Program at Conestoga College, completed a BScN from McMaster University, has CON certifi cation from the CNA, and a MN (teaching focus) from Athabasca University.
Meet the Facilitators
Dr. Mary Jane Esplen
Dr. Mary Jane Esplen is the Director of de Souza Institute, Clinician-Scientist at the University Health Network and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Dr. Esplen continues to have a practice in psychosocial-oncology and conducts research to develop new measures for the fi eld of psycho-oncology or interventions, including group therapy interventions or counseling approaches for women and men undergoing genetic testing or who are dealing with a current cancer and its impacts. She has an interest and expertise also in approaches to managing grief and loss, conducting workshops for health professionals.
Dr. Mary Vachon
Dr. Mary Vachon is a nurse, clinical sociologist, psychotherapist, educator, and cancer survivor. She is currently a Psychotherapist in Private Practice, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto and Clinical Consultant at Wellspring. Dr. Vachon is the author of ‘Occupational Stress in the Care of the Critically Ill, Dying and Bereaved.’ She has published over 170 scientifi c articles and book chapters and delivered over 1,600 lectures around the world on topics related to bereavement, occupational stress, life-threatening illness, palliative care, survivorship and spirituality.
Martha Karn
Martha Karn is a registered nurse with many years of experience in the speciality of oncology and hospice palliative care. Martha currently works as the Inpatient Palliative Care Coordinator at Grand River Hospital /Grand River Regional Cancer Centre in Kitchener, Ontario. Her career experience includes working in adult surgical oncology, community, consulting, outpatient cancer clinic and residential hospice settings. Martha is also an adjunct professor with the McMaster School of Family Medicine and is currently working on her Masters in Oncology/Palliative Care as an international student. Martha has completed her CON(c) certifi cation and her CHPCN(c) certifi cation.
Dr. Jiahui Wong
Dr. Jiahui Wong has over 15 years of experience in research and program evaluation in pharmaceutical, educational, and health care contexts. Jiahui has an MSc in Epidemiology from Laval University in Quebec and a PhD from the Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto. She completed her postdoctoral training in Randomized Clinical Trials at the University of Toronto. Her recent research activities include instrument development, phase 3 clinical trials as well as program evaluation in nursing.
Cathy Kiteley
Cathy Kiteley holds a MScN and works at the Trillium Health Partners, the Credit Valley site as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. She has worked in the area of oncology and palliative care for more than 20 years. She has both her Oncology and Palliative Certifi cation from the Canadian Nurses Association. In addition to her clinical work, she is part of the development team for several CCO symptom management guides to practice. She is an active member of the MH Regional hospice palliative care committee. She regularly mentors masters’ nursing students. Cathy is a guest lecturer at the Bloomberg School of Nursing, de Souza Institute and provides leadership at Wellspring. She is the co-chair for the provincial APN Community of Practice.
Charmaine Lynden
Charmaine holds a MN and works as a Nurse Practitioner in Radiation Oncology at Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Centre at Trillium Health Partners, Credit Valley Hospital site. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 2008 and has worked in the areas of both Radiation and Medical Oncology. Her clinical work involves running a NP-led symptom management clinic for patients receiving combined modality treatment for thoracic and pelvic malignancies. Her other areas of interest include primary CNS tumors, and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT).
Aronela Benea
Aronela Benea is an Advanced Practice Nurse at Women’s College Hospital in the After Cancer Treatment Transition (ACTT) Clinic. She completed her RN training in Romania in 1990. Aronela obtained her BScN degree (Internationally Educated Nurses Program, 2009) and her MScN degree (2012) from York University. She has worked in oncology clinical care and research since 2008. In her current role she provides cancer survivorship care to patients with various cancers. Aronela has a special interest in cancer survivorship care and research.
Janet Lovegrove
Janet Lovegrove, RN, BScN, MSc, CPMHN, has taught the introductory Fundamentals Hospice Palliative Care course while teaching undergraduate nursing students at McMaster University. As an Associated Medical Services (AMS) Phoenix “Call to Caring” Fellow at McMaster University’s School of Nursing, she led an interdisciplinary team advocating for the self-care needs of caring professionals. Their AMS Phoenix Fellowship project titled, “Bringing Transformational Change to Health Care Education, Practice, and Community Settings” continues to help interested caring professionals in various educational, clinical, and community settings to navigate the world of growing technological care with care and compassion for self. In January and February of 2015, together with Viola Fodor her AMS Phoenix mentor, Janet co-facilitated twelve “Self-Care for Caring Professionals” one-day workshops for critical care nurses at University Health Network.
