Noun : A noun is a word used to name a person, animal, place or thing.

Types of noun : Common, Proper, Singular and Plural nouns.

Common and Proper Nouns

Remember, a common noun names any person, place, or thing. A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing.

A proper noun always begins with a capital letter.

Example : boy, state (common nouns)

Underline the nouns in the sentences.

1. Babita was wondering what the weather will be on Friday. 2. The boys and girls from the School are planning a picnic.

3. Babita asked his teacher, Mr. Rakesh how the class could find out.

A Singular noun names one person, place, or thing. A plural noun

names more than one person, place, or thing. Usually, to form the plural you just add ‘s’. Words that end in s, sh, ch, or x need es to form the plural.

Pronouns are words that take the place of singular or plural nouns.

Singular Plural When Used

I, me we, us to talk about yourself

You you to talk to a person

he, she, it, him, her they, them to talk about other persons or things

Example : Purnima brought a gift to the party.

He brought a gift to the party. Exercise : 1

Write the pronoun that takes the place of the underlined noun or nouns.

3. Sunil is taking a present for Sonia. 4. Rakesh and Harish bought her a CD. 5. Dad gave the boys the money.

Pick the Right Pronoun

Use I, we, he, or she when the pronoun is a subject.

Urmila plays the violin.

She plays the violin.

Kailash plays the piano.

He plays the piano.

Use me, us, her, him, or them when the pronoun is not a subject.

Mom took Bipasha shopping. Mom took her shopping. Dad went fishing with Faisal. Dad went fishing with him.

Use it and you in any part of a sentence. The bicycle is new.

It is new.

I waited for the bus. I waited for it.
