Edition

April 2021

The Isles Annual Meeting was held March 31

st

and a quorum was achieved with 238

owners were present in-person or by proxy. Mike Holland, John Savage were

reelected, and Robert Wolfgang was newly elected to the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors and the Property Manger are continuing to look into the

erosion issues around the ponds. Abby Tyrna and Molly Holland with the UF/IFAS

Extension & Sustainability met with Joshua Jones, Property Manager, and two Board

members on Tuesday, March 30th. They offered suggestions on how to mitigate

future erosion issues. Their suggestions included the installation of plants in the pond

and additional landscaping in the common area. The association will be obtaining

proposals based on their suggestions. The next scheduled meeting on the pond

erosion issue is currently scheduled for Wednesday, May 26

th

@6:00 pm in the Town

Center.

Second quarter HOA fees are due April 1st. HOA payments are no longer accepted

at the management office. Please see page # 2 for more details.

The speed limit within the community is 25mph. Please watch your speed as many

residents walk the community.

The Isles is full of wildlife including alligators, hogs and many bird species. Please do

not feed any wildlife. When the wildlife learns that people are a food source it leads

to safety issues for residents.

Please close pool umbrellas after use. If we experience high winds the umbrellas may

blow over if left open. This creates a safety issue and property damage concern. We

appreciate your collaboration.

COMMITTEE UPDATES

Are your faucet handles difficult to turn? If you have Moen

faucets the cartridge within the handle may be worn. It is

suggested you contact Moen at 800-289-6636 and inquire

about them sending you replacement cartridges at no

charge. Keep in mind to replace the cartridges one needs

a cartridge puller, which all plumbers don’t have.

One doesn’t need ACC approval to mount American flag

brackets to one’s home. Make sure you use proper

fasten-ers for masonry.

Homeowners attending ACC meetings in which their

application for exterior improvements is reviewed will

receive the committee’s decision at that meeting. Those

not attending such a meeting will need to go the HOA

office the next day to obtain a copy of the decision.

Deci-sions will no longer be emailed.

The ACC meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of each

month in the Town Center. The meeting time has changed

to 11:15am.

BRIGHTVIEW LANDSCAPING

Dear residents, spring is upon us so we will start seeing

the plants we cutback start to grow. Many plants also

start to bud and leaf out from their winter dormancy

this month with the hotter temperatures.

It is important to know that some plants, such as

crotons, ixoras, jatrophas, and hibiscuses may

experi-ence cold damage so please be patient while they leaf

back out.

We are currently working on a backlog of plant

replacements, which will be installed this month. Shrub

fertilizer went down last week to start making shrubs

fill out from cutbacks, and turf fertilizer will begin in a

week to green up the turf throughout the community.

Mowing will now be on a weekly service typically

starting the first of April. Mowing service will include

all the usual suspects, mowing, blowing, weed eating,

with soft and hard edging.

The detail crews will remain hard at work to keep your

shrubs beautiful for the season.

Our Irrigation system is continually monitored and

adjusted for the changing seasons and plant

require-ments. Repairs and modification are taken care of as

needed.

Most of the country is currently experiencing fewer

cases of COVID. Brightview continues with our

enhanced PPE and sanitizing protocol including checking

temperatures of all employees as they come to work in

the mornings. “Think Positive and Test Negative”

BrightView appreciates your loyalty and commits to

creating a beautiful place to live.

CERT planning and having CERT volunteers prepare for

the upcoming hurricane season begins this month. We will

be checking medical supplies as well as testing our digital

radios and generators.

The Hybrid CERT Basic Training Course Registration has

started with plans to do the Skills Testing portion of the

course in June.

SPORTS CORNER

As the snows melt and the Robins return up North some

of our residents depart The Isles. Your Rules & Regs

committee wishes you safe travels.

We have a few suggested reminders regarding preparing

your home for your departure.

Turn off your water using the device on the side of the

house.

Set your AC to 80 degrees on "auto". Do not turn

your AC off while you are gone.

Bring in all furniture from your lanais and porches.

Make arrangements to have shutters put up in the

event of a storm. The person delegated to put up

shutters should have either keys or garage door codes

to access your home as well as alarm codes where

necessary.

If you find that you have an excess of food items we

suggest that you bring them to:

RULES & REGS CORNER

GROUNDS COMMITTEE

The old saw that “Spring has sprung” is in evidence all

around us – from the fragrant jasmine at the town center

to the colorful bougainvillea seen around town, there is

proof that we still experience seasonal change in Sarasota.

The live oaks have finally stopped dropping their leaves

and are greening up anew. In the last few weeks, ahead of

the growing season, Brightview has completed the hard

cutbacks on jatropha, hibiscus and crape myrtles. Soon

the new growth will appear with new density. However,

there have been a number of crape myrtle throughout the

community that have failed to thrive in spite of efforts to

encourage them. The committee members have marked

them, and a couple of Little Gem magnolias, for removal.

Brightview will complete that work in the next few weeks.

As the committee looks to judiciously spend our budget

allotment, the next area of change will be the large bed

adjacent to the south parking lot. With so much original

foliage aging out there is plenty of work ahead to identify

and refresh the common beds.

Once again, we invite anyone interested in becoming a

committee member to check in with Josh Jones, Property

Manager and Olga Barrios, Activities Director. It’s a nice

way to meet your neighbors and contribute to the

ongo-ing enhancement of The Isles. We’d love to welcome you!

The next Grounds Committee meeting will be on

Thursday, April 1 @ 1pm in the Town Center.

COMMITTEE UPDATES

SPORTS CORNER

Hello Sports Fans

Here are the final tournament updates:

A tennis mixed doubles tournament was held on March 13th. Again it was a beautiful day for tennis and everybody had a good time. On the women’s side the winner was Chelita Houston, second place was a tie between Tammy Terpening and Coco Good. Frank Metcalfe took home the gold for the men, with Tom Iceman coming in second. Congratulations to all of our winners and thanks to all for coming out to play.

Pickleball tournaments have wrapped up. A women’s contest was held on March 14th. The winner was Mary Beckwith, with Coco Good coming in second. On March 21st the men took to the courts. Winning on the men’s side was Bob Staab, with second place going to George Carlin. On March 28th, it was time for mixed doubles George Carlin and Mary Beckwith took 1st place. Thanks again to Tammy Terpening for managing the tournaments this season.

Jim Parsons was nice enough to take care of the bocce tournaments again this year. The overall winners were Barbara Cummings and Jim Parsons….hmm. Runner ups were Sally Mills and Graydon Bell. The winners of the consolation bracket were Nino Gaetano and Joan Skarbez.

A note on tennis court scheduling:

We have repeatedly had a problem with players signing up and reserving a court and then not arriving, and not removing their name from the schedule. This is inconsiderate to other residents who want to schedule some court time. Players should remove their name from the schedule as soon as they know that they will be not be using the court. This will give someone else a chance to use the court.

When signing up for a court, please provide your full last name. Initials, squiggles, or other illegible writings are not acceptable. We have many tennis players in The Isles and we all share these courts. Please be considerate of your fellow players when it comes to scheduling.

Seasonal residents, have a safe trip home. We will see you in the fall.

The next committee meeting will be Thursday, April 15th

@ 2:30 pm in the Ton Center As always, residents are invited

to attend. John Savage Chairperson

Looking for something to watch on TV this month? Here are some films and series I recommend this

month.

PRIME:

KODACHROME

- (Drama 2017) - Ed Harris , Jason Sudekis and Elizabeth Olson. For those of us who

remember film photography, Ed Harris plays a professional photographer and Jason Sudekis is his

estranged son. They take a road trip to Kansas where the last Kodak PhotoLab developing film will soon

be closing for good. A familiar formula, acted beautifully but not a “duplicate” story.

SOUND OF METAL

- (Drama Music 2019) - A heavy metal drummer begins to lose his hearing. This

film stars Riz Ahmed. He is not new to acting, and if you have not heard his name, you will. Excellent

per-formance! The sound in this film, moving from what we hear to what our hero, hears is worth the price of

admission.

INFORMER

- TV series - One season but set up for a second. A young British-Pakistani man is pressured

into being an informer for a counter-terrorism officer. May sound formulaic but it is not. Who is really the

good guy? NOTE - the female detective (Bel Powley) is Carrie Philby in the above recommended film.

And in case you still have not seen it,

ANOTHER ROUND

(Comedy, Drama) starring Mads Mikkelson

is now available on Prime.

NETFLIX:

CARRIE PILBY

- (Comedy, Drama 2016) - A friendless, precocious 19 year old is seeing a therapist

(Nathan Lane) who challenges her to make and act on a to-do list around being happy. (e.g.- make a

friend). Gabriel Byrne (I enjoy just listening to his voice and watching him) is her British father. Watch if

you need a smile.

WHITE TIGER

- (Drama, Crime 2021) - A rags -to-riches story set in India with many surprises along

the way. The hero narrates his own story not glossing over any of his choices. To escape a life of extreme

poverty in a country of extremes, he will do and say anything to get ahead. Funny. Sad. Honorable?

Dishonorable? Our hero is all of the above.

Enjoy the movies,

Tova Fisch
