Where will graduates of the degree programme
Information and Library Services work?
Librarians or Information Managers acquire, evaluate and organise information and media which they index and catalogue as well as conveying them to specific user groups in various fields of work. These span the public libraries, the university and research libraries to the information centres and networks in organisations and companies. The individual qualifications are therefore to be weighted accordingly: In many cases personal consulting and brokering of information is most important, in other cases the focused, efficient maintenance of databases, digital archives or cooperating network systems. Public libraries play an important cultural role and are integrated into the concepts of life long learning. In both public and company libraries it is necessary to work in a management-oriented and business-based way.
The goal of the degree programme Information and Library Services is to train Information and Media Specialists for an information and media market that is becoming larger, more differentiated and more complex.
The target group-oriented and job specific focus of the different work processes require a high degree of flexibility, competence and empathy.
What are the contents of the degree programme?
The degree programme is divided into compulsory modules and compulsory elective modules. The compulsory modules focus on the basics of library and information management functions: information technologies, information management, information market and services, media and culture.
The compulsory electives offer the student the possibility of concentrating on his/her interests and priorities. As part of an
interdisciplinary study project students develop and implement solutions for real problems in close cooperation with partners in industry and institutions, for example in the areas of data structuring, resource description, knowledge organisation or information management.
A practical semester allows the students to put theory into practice.
Additional practical contacts in the metropolitan region of Hamburg are included in the degree programme.
In this way the graduates acquire the ability and competence to:
- use network-supported databases and information systems - select and organise information and media
- interact with the users and analyse their information needs - design information tools targeted for special user groups - control the quality of information products
- judge the adequacy and quality of media
- organise information services and cultural events - head libraries and information institutions
- integrate the respective management form into larger networks and companies

ERASMUS students and other international guest students can choose and combine any of these courses. We recommend choosing courses from the first two semesters in the beginning of their stay so that they can grow accustomed to the ways of our department and to technical terms in German.
We recommend the study project (18 ECTS) for students who stay with us for a second semester.
Project work is a good way of getting to know ones fellow students, learning how to manage a comprehensive task and being answerable to a customer.
Programme: Information and Library Services (Bachelor)
The lectures in these degree programmes are in German. ERASMUS students are welcome in all courses. It is also possible to help organise a work placement but only for guest students with excellent knowledge of the German language.

How do you apply as a guest student?
The academic year is split into two semesters. You can apply to come for one and a maximum of two semesters:
Winter semester:
Sept. - Feb. Application deadline: 30. May
Summer semester:
March - July Application deadline: 30. November
Admission Requirements
In order to be offered a place as an international guest student you must be enrolled in an institution of higher education in your home country and have successfully completed at least one academic year in a higher education programme. For the above programmes you must have good knowledge of the German language.

- proof of payment of the semester contribution (includes public transport)
- accommodation form
- Learning Agreement for the courses in Hamburg - Transcript of Records from your home university
