YARD DUTY

YARD SUPERVISION PRO TOCOLS

1. Yard supervision is an essential element in teachers’ duty of care. It is now clearly established that in supervising students, teacher’s duty of care is one of positive action.

2. Be aware that students are usually less constrained and more prone to accidents and injury than in a more closely supervised classroom.

3. Be aware that yard duty supervision within the college requires the teacher to fully comply with DET guidelines and brings with it an increased duty of care. It is a teacher’s responsibility to be aware of these guidelines and duty of care responsibilities. These are presented in the college Yard Duty policy. They are also on :

http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/spag/safety/Pages/dutyofcare.aspx

4. Teachers are expected to follow school policy while on yard duty. INSIST that students pick up rubbish – gloves are available from student administration.

Duty teachers must forward the names of any defiant students to the relevant cluster leader.

5. Students must not take photos or video in the yard.

6. Teachers rostered for duty are to attend the designated area at the time indicated on the roster. 7. Recess and Lunch 1 duty teachers must collect the green bum bag from the library prior to their duty.

Recess duty teachers will return the bag to the library after the duty. For Lunch 1 duty teachers you will hand over the bum bag to the Lunch 2 duty teacher who will return the bag to the Library at the end of lunch.

8. Teachers on duty are to remain in the designated area until the end of the break period or until replaced by the relieving teacher, whichever is applicable.

9. The handing over of duty from one teacher to another must be quite definite and must occur in the area of designated duty. Where a relieving teacher does not arrive for duty, the teacher currently on duty should send a message to the office, but do not leave the area until replaced. If you are on the first half of lunch, it is important to know who will replace you.

10. No changes to the Yard Duty Roster are to be made without the approval of the daily organiser. Teachers must be on time to yard duty, if a teacher is unable to their yard duty for any reason, it is your responsibility to swap with another staff member and inform the daily organiser.

11. Be alert and vigilant – intervene IMMEDIATELY if potentially dangerous behaviour is observed in the yard – enforce behaviour standards and logical consequences for breaches to safety rules.

12. Teachers should always be on the move and visible. THE YARD DUTY VESTS MUST BE WORN. 13. Move students towards their lockers and class on the warning bell.
