Server into a

Rackmount Cabinet

This guide provides the information you need to install your Gateway 960 or Gateway 980 server into a rackmount cabinet. Read this guide to learn how to:

Convert a Gateway server into a rackmount

configured server and install the server into a rackmount server cabinet. See “Converting your server to a rackmount server” on page 4.

(6)

Identifying parts in the accessory kit

There are two accessory kits for the Gateway 960 or Gateway 980 servers:

■ Rackmount handle kit. Install the rackmount handle kit if you are converting your server to a rackmount server.

■ Rackmount rail kit. Install the rackmount rail kit on all Gateway servers.

Safety-related rackmount

installation instructions

When your Gateway server is installed in a closed or multi-unit rackmount cabinet, make sure that you consider the following items:

Ambient temperature

The ambient temperature inside the rackmount cabinet may be greater than the ambient temperature in the room. Make sure that rackmount cabinet is ventilated so that your Gateway server operates within its specified maximum operating temperature range. For information about the maximum operating temperature, see the “Environmental

specifications” section of your user’s guide. The user’s guide is on the Server Companion CD (SCCD) that shipped with your server.

Stability

Make sure that your Gateway server is stable in the rackmount cabinet and mounted according to the rackmount instructions in this installation guide.

Input supply

Check the power rating label on the back of your server to make sure that the power supply circuits are adequate for the server power requirements. Overloading the power supply circuits may affect the over-current protection and supply wiring.

Grounding

Make sure that your rackmount servers are correctly grounded. Pay particular attention to correctly grounding the power supply connections on power strips installed inside the rackmount cabinet.

(8)

Converting your server to a

rackmount server

You can convert your Gateway 960 or Gateway 980 server to a rackmount server. Before converting your server, make sure that the server is on a stable work surface, such as a strong table or counter.

Although your server configuration may vary from the server configuration shown in the following instructions, the general installation process will be similar. To convert your server to a rackmount server, you need to complete the following tasks in sequence:

1

Remove the front cover, side and top panels, and feet.

2

Remove and rotate the drives and EMI shields 90 degrees.

3

Rotate and install the front cover drive faceplates.

4

Install the rackmount handles.

5

Install the front cover and top panel.

If your server came from Gateway pre-configured for rack installation, go to “Installing your server into a rackmount cabinet” on page 16.

(9)

Removing the front cover, top and side panels,

and feet

Tools you need to complete this task:

To remove the front cover:

1

Turn off your server, then disconnect the power cord and all other cables connected to the server.

2

Unlock the Raid bay cover door, press the cover release latch on each side of the front cover, then pull the cover away from the case.

(10)

To remove the top panel:

1

Remove the two top panel screws on the back of the case.

2

Slide the top panel toward the back of the case, then lift the panel up and away from the case.

(11)

To remove the side panel:

1

Lay the case on its side so the three captive thumbscrews are at the top.

2

Loosen the three captive thumbscrews that secure the side panel to the case. These screws cannot be removed.

Tips & Tricks Loosen only the captive thumbscrews that are surrounded by black metal.

(12)

3

Slide the side panel toward the front of the case, then lift the panel away from the case.

To remove the server feet:

1

Use needle-nose pliers to grip the server foot anchor, pull the anchor straight out, then remove the server foot.

OR

-Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the server foot anchor up, pull the anchor straight out, then remove the server foot.

(13)

Removing and rotating the drives and EMI

shields

To remove the drives:

(14)

2

Press the release latch on each side of a drive and pull the drive out.

3

Repeat Step 1 and 2 for each drive.

(15)

To remove the EMI shields:

1

Return the server to its upright position.

2

Press the release latch on each of the full-height EMI shields and remove them from the empty drive bays.

3

Remove the half-height EMI shield.

To move the unused mounting rails:

(16)

2

Remove the mounting rail.

3

Place the mounting rail into one of the drive bays that will not be used when you rotate the drives for the rackmount configuration. Snap the rail clip over the rail to hold the rail in the bay.

4

Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for each unused mounting rail that should be moved to accommodate the rackmount server drive orientation.

To rotate and install the EMI shields:

1

Lay the server on its side in the position it will be in when you mount it in the server cabinet.

(17)

3

Install the full-height EMI shields into the drive bays that you will not use when you insert the drives. The shields may be loose when they are first installed, but they will tighten and straighten in the bays when you insert the drives back into the bays.

To rotate and install the drives:

1

Slide the drives into the drive bays. Make sure that the drives lock into the bays.

(18)

Rotating and installing the front cover drive

faceplate

To rotate and install the front cover drive faceplate:

1

Remove the drive bay faceplates from the front cover by pressing the faceplate release tabs inward, then pulling the faceplates away from the front cover.

2

Rotate the faceplates 90 degrees, then snap them into the front cover slots that correspond to the drive bays you will not use.

2

Lift the server to the same height as the middle rails, then align the inner rails on the server with middle rails.

(28)

3

Push the server evenly into the cabinet until it is pushed completely into the cabinet. If the rails lock when you push the server in, slide the white release latches toward the front of the server and push again.

Tips & Tricks The server should move smoothly, without binding, after the first installation.

If the server does not slide smoothly, make sure that all rails and brackets are aligned correctly.

If the server jams, slide the white release latch toward the front of the server and pull the server to the fully extended position, then push it closed again.

Tips & Tricks When you press the white release latches, you may have to slide the server out slightly before pushing it back into the locked position.

(29)

4

Pull the server partially out of the front of the cabinet until the middle rails lock into the outer rails. You will feel the latch lock into place.

5

Slide the white release latches toward the front of the server, then push the server back into the cabinet until the inner rails lock into place.
