Introduction
I. INTRODUCTION
LanFax is a fax server and software used to send and receive faxes through email accounts. Faxes are sent to a fax number and received from any regular fax or LanFax account. Faxes received through email appear as a .tif image file (tagged image file) attachment.
II. GETTING STARTED
To obtain a LanFax account, have your department head or IMO place a service request at
http://doithelpdesk.pace.edu and include your:
• name • campus • department
• email address • telephone extension • network printer (if applicable)
DoIT issues a LanFax account such as: 9149891234. Your LanFax account is the number you provide when asked to supply a fax number.
Note: No new fax machines will be purchased by Pace University. Such requests will be furnished with a LanFax account.
III. OBTAINING AND INSTALLING FAXVUE A. FaxVue Software
A fax is sent as a tagged image file (.tif) and software is needed to view it. DoIT-supported software for viewing a fax is FaxVue. The software is available at: http://compinfo.pace.edu
B. Installing FaxVue 1. Creating a Folder

• double-click C:
The contents of C: appears on the screen. To create a new folder:
• click File, select New and then select Folder
Note: This will create a folder called New Folder. You will delete this folder after installation.
2. Downloading the Software
To download FaxVue:
• point the Web browser to http://compinfo.pace.edu/imo/utils/faxvue/ • click faxvue32.exe
The Save As dialog box appears.
To save the file in New Folder:
• click the drop down arrow in Save in: and select C: • double-click New Folder
• click Save
3. Extracting FaxVue
To install FaxVue, the files are required to be uncompressed or “extracted”. First, close the Web browser and:
• double click • double-click C:

The contents of New Folder appears. • double-click
The Installing FaxVue Software dialog box appears.
The default Extract to: location is c:\FaxVue. • click Start
After extraction, the Finished dialog box appears.
• click OK
The FaxVue icon is placed in the FaxVue folder on C: Now, to delete New Folder: • double-click
• double-click C:
• right-click New Folder and select Delete

Invoke Netscape and:
• click Edit and select Preferences • click + next to Navigator
A list of Netscape categories appears.
• select Applications
• scroll down and select TIFF Image in Description The following settings should be viewed in File type details:

If Handled By: lists a different application, then: • click
Note: If Edit is gray, select New Type, fill in boxes and browse for the FaxVue file. This most likely occurs because a plugin was previously installed.
The Edit Type dialog box appears.
• type image/tiff in MIME type: • click Application in Handled By • click Browse
To locate FaxVue:
• click the drop-down arrow in Look in: and select C: • double-click FaxVue

The Edit Type dialog box appears. • click OK
The File type details list FaxVue as the Handled By: application. • click OK to save the changes
Note: Using this software ensures DoIT support.
IV. SENDING AND RECEIVING FAXES
LanFax uses email accounts to send and receive a fax. Please note that use of the LanFax must comply with Pace University’s Appropriate Use Policy for Information Technology.
A. Sending a Fax Using Netscape
First, invoke Netscape and:
• click Communicator and select Messenger
• type yourpassword in the Password Entry dialog box • click New Msg
• address the email to [email protected]

• click and select the file to attach
Note: The path of the file must be known in order to attach it. If a paper document or form needs to be faxed, it can be scanned into a file for attachment (using a package such as Paint Shop).
The information typed in the body of the email appears as the fax coversheet. Then: • click
The fax is sent to the intended recipient and is received as a regular fax on their fax machine or as an email message if it was sent to a LanFax account.
Note: A confirmation message from faxgate@faxserve is sent to the sender. Remember, the coversheet contains any text that was in the body of the e-mail. If you have your mail set to attach your business card, the text from the business card appears as a separate sheet after the fax message.
B. Receiving a Fax
To receive a fax, invoke Netscape and:
• click Communicator and select Messenger
• type yourpassword in the Password Entry dialog box • click Get Msg
An incoming fax is listed under Sender as: areacode+phonenumber@faxserve The actual fax appears as an email attachment.

This is a Faxgate Message Delivery which including the date and time the fax was sent, as well as the number of pages. The faxed information is in the form of a .tif file.
To open the fax:
• double-click the attachment
The file opens using FaxVue and appears as an image.
C. Viewing a Multiple Page Fax
A fax received with multiple pages has the number of pages located in the bottom left corner.
To access a specific page: • click or
