Topic 1: Understanding Leadership Time- 7:30 PM BST

Speaker: Dr. Monir Uddin Ahmed

Dr. Monir Uddin Ahmed is a Microbial biotechnologist with having master’s degree in both Microbiology and Biotechnology from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and the Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. He obtained a scholarship throughout his academic life and did MS in Biotechnology with an AusAID scholarship. Obtained PhD degree, from the Swinburne University of Technology in 2014 with a scholarship from The State Government of Victoria, Australia, in the broader area of food safety researching in the specific area of Molecular/Microbial Epidemiology of Campylobacter jejuni , the most frequently isolated bacterial foodborne pathogen in the world.

He has also the founder of a bilingual science magazine named “ Scien fic Bangladesh ” with the objec ve of “ Science Review for Developed Bangladesh” and serving as Editor. Presently working as Assistant Professor in Qassim University, Saudi Arabia. Along with working for food safety in the laboratory, he focuses to improve the laboratory management and leadership ability of scien sts globally, par cularly in Bangladesh and South Asia, and thus playing role in global scien fic advancement.

He has authored a book on leadership tled: নতৃে র াথিমক বুঝাপড়া - পািরবািরক, পশাগত, সামা জক ও রাজৈনিতক জীবেনর জন

As Co-lead (2020-2021) of Science Diplomacy in the South Asia working group of Global Young Academy, he played a key role in organizing the first-ever Science Diplomacy in South Asia workshop. He is one of the founding members of the Na onal Young Academy(NYAB) and the founder of the Science Diplomacy and Leadership working group of NYAB.

Speaker: Dr. Almas Taj Awan

Dr. Almas Taj Awan is a Scien fic Researcher, Innova on expert, and Entrepreneur residing in the Sao Paulo State of Brazil. She has managed many STEM-related programs/ innova ve projects, including energy, smart villages, health, science educa on, etc., and has won awards at both the na onal and interna onal levels. She has been working with organiza ons across Europe, the US, and Asia and has liaised with senior stakeholders within governmental and non-governmental bodies. Her career goals made her travel to more than 15 countries across the globe.

Life story:

Dr. Almas T. Awan received her Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the Campinas State University (UNICAMP), Sao Paulo, Brazil. She is an independent science policy analyst, science diplomacy ac vist, and founder of the science diplomacy working group within the Global Young Academy (GYA). She is also running different startup ini a ves as founder/ co-founder. She is the Co-Director, and Host of an online series in partnership with an interna onal organiza on,

‘Traces Dreams,’ where innovators from countries of the Global South are interviewed.

She has been the execu ve commi ee member of the GYA, the Cherie Blair Founda on Mentee for the Mentoring Women in Business program (London, UK), one of the 30 finalists of the Global Innova on through Science and Technology program of the AAAS (American Associa on for the Advancement of Sciences), and the finalist of Falling Walls Venture (Berlin). She has authored peer-reviewed publica ons and has presented numerous lectures to na onal and interna onal audiences. Besides her academic career, she had been an Anchorperson and Producer of Radio programs for four years and also on Na onal TV Channel (PTV) for one year in Pakistan. She is a member of The American Associa on for the advancement of Sciences, The American Society for Mass spectrometry, and the Brazilian Society of Mass spectrometry. Her career goals made her travel to more than 15 countries across the globe.

Email: Sabrina M. Elias, PhD is currently appointed as an Assistant professor in the School of Environment and Life Sciences Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). She has completed her Doctoral study as a fellow of Beachell-Borlaug Interna onal Scholars Program, jointly in University of Dhaka, University of Nebraska Lincoln, University of Texas at Aus n and Interna onal Rice Research Ins tute (IRRI). She did her MS and BSc (Hons) from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University of Dhaka. Her academic training and work experience have included both domes c and interna onal perspec ves on research. This includes implementa on of bioinforma cs, next genera on genomics, phenomics and molecular biology focusing on Bangladeshi rice genomic diversity and abio c stress tolerance of rice. Previously she had worked in the Na onal Jute genome Project in Bangladesh, BCSIR, Plant Biotechnology Lab (DU) and in Australian Na onal University. She has published a handsome number of research ar cles in interna onal peer reviewed journals and has contributed in six book chapters. She has also contributed in a text book of gene cs for undergraduates, as an associate editor. Previously she was selected as TWAS.BVA.NXT fellow and FAOBMB young scien st travel fellowship awardee in 2012. She had obtained TWAS individual research inves gator fund and IUB sponsor research fund for con nuing research studies in 2019. For her impac ul research works a er doctoral study she was selected as an awardee for the BBIS Impact award in 2020 from the Bayer. She got professional leadership training from Tero interna onal in consecu ve two years as a part of the awards. In 2021 she has been selected as a young affiliate of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for five years tenure. She is an execu ve commi ee member of Global Network of Bangladeshi Biotechnologists (GNOBB) and a founding member of the Na onal Young Academy of Bangladesh (NYAB) where she is elected as the treasurer and currently working as the Secretary (in charge) in NYAB. Educated and trained in the USA, Japan, Norway, and Bangladesh, Quazi M. Ahmed is one of the top leadership and so skills facilitators in Bangladesh. He is considered the pioneer of the modern approach to L&D in the country. He has completed the following cer fica ons in recent years: Cer fied facilitator, from InsideOut Coaching/Development (USA & India), Cer fied Professional Trainer from Global Trainers Federa on, Cer fied L&D Professional from Aon Hewi Learning Center, and Cer fied PPA Prac oner from Thomas Assessment Pvt. Mr. Ahmed received the “Global Training and Development Leadership Award” in February 2017 which was presented by the Mumbai-based World HRD Congress in its 25th-anniversary celebra ons. With more than 25 years of training, teaching, and consul ng experience, he has facilitated training sessions a ended by close to one hundred thousand people in the nonprofit, private, and public sectors in Bangladesh. Topic -1: Project Management for Researchers Time- 7:30PM BST

Speaker: Dr. Md. Azizul Haque

Md. Azizul Haque earned his gradua on (B.Sc. Hons.) and M. Sc.

(Thesis) from the dept. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Rajshahi in 2008 and 2010, respec vely. He was awarded Ph.D. in Applied Life Sciences (Major: Molecule Gene c) from the Gyeongsang Na onal University, South Korea in 2014.

Next, he started working as a post-doctoral researcher in the Gyeongnam Na onal University of Science and Technology, South Korea. In 2016, he came back to Bangladesh and started working as an assistant professor at dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular biology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology-

-University (HSTU), Dinajpur. He published thirty-one (31) original research ar cles in interna onal peer-reviewed journals and four (4) ar cles in regional journals. He discovered a new enzyme named cellulose microfibril swelling enzyme and its colorimetric assay method. His current research focus on genomics-bioinforma cs studies on bacterial isolates dealing with bioethanol as well as pes cide degrading endophy c bacterial diversity, plant growth promo on, and genomics. He had par cipated in OPCW-TWAS sponsored joint workshop on Policy and diplomacy for scien sts at ICTP in Trieste, Italy, in Sept. 2017 and received TWAS young scien st research grants in 2018. He has been elected as a Member of the Na onal Young Academy of Bangladesh (NYAB) in 2020.

Topic -2: Research Culture Development in the Laboratory and Research Ins tutes Time- 8:45 PM BST

Speaker – Dr. Md. A ar Rahman

Md. A ar Rahman PhD is working as a professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Chi agong. Dr. Rahman is the principal inves gator of the

Laboratory of Alterna ve Medicine and Natural Product Research of the aforesaid department. He has completed his PhD from the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Ehime University, Japan. He

is carrying out the research to explore the novel and indigenous phytomedicinal and func onal food sources as alterna ve therapeu cs to deliver in the cellular target. He published more than a hundred ar cles in peer-reviewed and high-impact journals.

Dr. Rahman is serving as vice president of Na onal Young Academy Bangladesh (NYAB), Joint secretary of Bangladesh Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology(BSBMB), ExCo member of Bangladesh Biosafety and Biosecurity Society (BBBS), ExCo member of Global Network of Bangladeshi Biotechnologists (GNOBB), ExCO member of Federa on of Asian Biotechnology Associa ons (FABABA) and Board member of Asian Federa on of Biotechnology (AFOB).

He is also working as an editorial board member of quite a good number of journals and he presented his works in around twenty countries. He has been awarded BAS-AASSA young Scien sts Award 2108, Biosafety Award 2017, Joint Travel Award by Malaysian Academy of Science and US Na onal Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (2017) MEXT scholarship 2003, NRF Fellowship, South Africa.

His research Interest: Medicinal & func onal foods, Bioac ve Natural products, Complementary and alterna ve medicine for chronic diseases.

Professional Prepara on and appointments

Dr. Abidur Rahman completed his undergraduate and M.Sc. from the Department of Biochemistry. Dhaka University. In 1997, he started his Ph.D. in Biological Science (focusing on Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology) in Kobe University, Japan as a MEXT fellow. He completed his Ph.D. in September 2001.

A er comple ng his Ph.D. he was awarded pres gious JSPS postdoctoral fellow in Japan Atomic Energy Ins tute. He worked there from Nov 2001 to December 2002. A er that, he moved to the University of Massachuse s, Amherst, USA, as a senior Postdoctoral Researcher and served there ll September 2006.

In October 2006 Dr. Rahman joined as an Assistant Professor in the Cryobiofron er Research Center, Faculty of Agriculture, Iwate University, Japan. In April 2010, he was promoted to Associate professor in the same center. A er organiza onal reconstruc on, in April 2015 Dr.

Rahman moved to the Dept. of Plant BioSciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Iwate University, and working there as an Associate professor ll today. He also holds visi ng professorships in the University of Massachuse s, Amherst; Wake Forest University, USA, University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Research:

Dr. Rahman’s research is focused on understanding the role of hormones in regula ng plant growth and development under both op mum and stress condi ons, iden fying new metal transporters for use in phytoremedia on, and developing eco-friendly new herbicides. His lab uses the combinatorial approach of physiology, molecular biology, gene edi ng, cell biology to answer the ques ons. So far, Dr. Rahman and his group have published more than 50 ar cles in high-impact journals like Molecular Plant, Plant Cell, Plant Physiology, Plant Journal, Current Biology, Trends in Plant Science etc. One of his research mo os is to publish quality high-impact ar cles.

According to Google Scholar, Dr. Rahman’s work has been cited 3127 mes ll today and in the last 5 years, the cita on number is 1433, which clearly reflects the importance and wide acceptance of his research work worldwide. In plant hormone biology research, he ranks

Ph.D. students, 3 MS students, 4 undergraduate students, and one technician. Of them, two Ph.D. students are from Dhaka University.

Editorial and Professional Ac vi es

Dr. Rahman serves as an Associate Editor for Fron ers in Plant Sciences (Plant Cell Biology sec on and editor for PLoS ONE, Journal of Plant growth regula on.

He also serves as a reviewer for PNAS, Plant Cell, Molecular Plant, Plant Communica ons, Nature Plant, Plant Physiology, Plant Journal, Physiologia Plantarum, Journal of Experimental Botany, Annals of Botany, Journal of Integra ve Plant Biology etc.

Dr. Rahman reviews grant applica ons for several interna onal grant agencies: Na onal Science Founda on (NSF), Israel Science Founda on (ISF), The United States- Israel Bina onal Agricultural Research and Development Fund. Austria Science Founda on (ASF).

Currently, he is the head of the interna onal affairs sec on of the united graduate school of agricultural sciences, Iwate University. He also serves as Program coordinator of Iwate University-University of Saskatchewan dual Ph.D. program. During his tenure at Iwate University, Dr. Rahman has developed curricular materials for graduate and undergraduate and new interna onal programs. He was the key person to develop MOU between several universi es, including Dhaka University.

Topic -2: Leadership in Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Time – 8.45 BST, 14:45 UTC, 5:45 PM Turkish Time Speaker - Dr. Yusuf Baran

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Baran is the President of the Izmir Ins tute of Technology in Izmir, Turkey. He earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Middle East Technical University in 2002 and 2006, respec vely.

During his Ph.D. studies, he worked at the Medical University of South Carolina for six months from 2005 to 2006. He has been working at the Izmir Ins tute of Technology since 2007.

Dr. Yusuf Baran has been involved in more than forty scien fic research projects supported by na onal and interna onal organiza ons. He has wri en more than 350 published scien fic ar cles and conference papers and has published one book. He also presented at over 200 na onal and interna onal conferences, mee ngs, and forums on science, technology, and diplomacy (including in the U.S., Brazil, China, Pakistan, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Israel, Germany, Chili, Sudan, Greece, Macedonia, Thailand, Bosnia, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, Russia, Malaysia, and South Africa). He was invited to and presented at many important conferences of global ins tu ons including the United Na ons, the European Parliament, the World Science Forum, the Global Baku Forum, the World Economic Forum and, the World Life Sciences Forum.

Dr. Baran’s scien fic achievements have been recognized by na onal and interna onal accredited ins tu ons, and he has received more than 100 awards. He was honored with the

“2013 Young Scien st” award by the World Economic Forum (WEF), conferred annually to 40 scien sts under the age of 40 who “ac vely play a transforma onal role in integra ng scien fic knowledge into society for the public good.” The Junior Chamber Interna onal awarded him the tle of “Most Outstanding Young Scien fic Leader of Turkey” in 2014. He earned the “Young Member Honor” in 2015, given to 25 scien sts under the age of 40 by the World Science Academy. He was selected as one of 30 people to par cipate in the “Science Diplomacy Workshop” in 2016 by The World Academy of Sciences. Dr. Baran also earned the “Outstanding Young Scien st Award” by the Turkish Pharmaceu cal Academy in 2017, by the Experimental Hematology Associa on in 2016, by the Science Heroes Associa on in 2013, and by the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2010. Dr. Baran’s doctoral thesis won the “Year’s Thesis” award in 2007.

Most recently, in 2018, he was one of the 28 people chosen by the American Science Advancement Organiza on to par cipate in the “Science Diplomacy and Leadership Workshop.”

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Baran is an alumnus of The Global Young Academy, an Execu ve Commi ee member of the World Science Academy’s Board of Young Affiliates (2016-Present), a founding member of the Developing World Academy of Engineering and Technology (2016-Present), a member of the World Associa on of Young Scien sts (2015-Present), and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Young Scien sts Program (2013-Present). He was also a member of

appointments, including ambassador for the Interna onal Young Scien st Program and advisory board member of the Academic & Scien fic Coopera on Project of Turkey.

In his research, Dr. Baran focuses on the molecular biology of cancer, science policies, and science diplomacy.

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Baran has been serving as President of Izmir Ins tute of Technology and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Izmir Technology Development Zone since October 20th, 18.

Topic -1: Supply Chain Management in Research Environment Time- 7:00 PM BST, 11 PM Australian Time

Speaker- Dr. Nawshad Haque

Dr. Nawshad is a Team Leader for Electrochemical Energy Systems at CSIRO Energy. His team is researching technology development and evalua on of hydrogen and renewable energy technologies. He also contributes to sustainable mineral processing research at CSIRO Mineral Resources. Nawshad leads CSIRO collabora on with Bangladesh BCSIR, RMIT University, and Indian research organiza on.

Dr. Nawshad has co-supervised CSIRO sponsored 10 PhD students and 50 vaca ons scholarship projects to comple on.

Dr. Nawshad has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Sydney. He is an elected Fellow of the Australasian Ins tute of Mining and Metallurgy, Australian Ins tute of Energy, and was a Director of the Board of the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society for 10 years.

Nawshad originally comes from Bangladesh, grew up along the India Bangladesh border area but le Bangladesh 25 years ago. He also lived in the UK and New Zealand. Dr. Nawshad is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Swinburne University of Technology and an Adjunct at Monash University and RMIT University.

Time- Speaker: Dr. Shabab Enam Khan

Professor Shahab Enam Khan is currently serving at the Department of Interna onal Rela ons, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. He is an acclaimed scholar in the fields of Security, Foreign Affairs, and Na onal Integrity Ins tu ons.

Professor Khan has served as

Advisor/Consultant/Board Members of various interna onal organiza ons, i.e. UNDP Maldives and Bangladesh, UNODC, UNWomen, Interna onal Union for Conserva on of Nature (IUCN), USAID, Interna onal Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK and Regional Center for Strategic Studies, Sri Lanka, and Jaago Founda on, Bangladesh. He also serves as a member of various high-level commi ees formed by the Government of Bangladesh.

He led PVE pioneering research for UNDP Maldives, UN Women and the Bri sh Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Professor Khan is regularly cited and interviewed by interna onal and na onal media. He is a Senior Fellow at the Hainan Ins tute of World Watch, Hainan, China and a non-resident Visi ng Fellow at the Nepal Ins tute for Interna onal Coopera on and Engagement. He has completed his Fellowships at the Universi es of Delaware and Birmingham in the US and the UK. He studied at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, University of Manchester, and the University of Dhaka.

Md. Salim Hossain is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Dhaka. He is a cer fied Mo va onal Interviewer, accredited by the Associa on for Psychological

Therapist (APT, UK). He has facilitated over 500 hours of training online and offline on

Workplace Counseling and Mo va onal Interview, Sexual Harassment, Workplace bullying, Stress & Anxiety Management, Human Resource Counseling, Depression Management with Enroute Interna onal Ltd., UCEP Bangladesh, SNV Netherlands, Epyllion group,

Bdjobs.com Ltd., ISSB etc. He also worked with a2i of the Prime Minister's Office, PKSF, IZA Germany, UKAID, ACF, CDIP, ERG, IoM etc. as a consultant. Mr. Salim pioneered

modern Industrial-Organiza onal Psychology in Bangladesh and served as a key person to run MS in I-O Psychology at the University of Dhaka.

Speaker- Dr. Muhammad Tarik Arafat

Dr. Tarik is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Prior to joining BME, BUET, he was working at the University of Leeds as a Post-doctoral research fellow funded by MeDe Innova on of the EPSRC Center for innova ve manufacturing in medical devices, where he developed collagen fabric while retaining its natural triple helix structure. Dr. Tarik has been working on the synthesis and integra on of polymer and/or composite and its fabrica on into suitable structures for more than 12 years. His PhD from the Na onal University of Singapore was on the development of addi vely manufactured based scaffolds for bone ssue engineering. During his PhD he was a ached to the Ins tute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR, Singapore. He also worked in Micron Inc, as a senior engineer for three years at the photolithography department.

He was the first full- me faculty member of the newly opened Biomedical Engineering Department of BUET where he designed and developed state-of-the-art laboratories. He was a council member of the Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC). He is also ac vely involved in the Bangladesh Biology Olympiad as the President of the Dhaka South region.
