FOR A WHILE WE WILL BE ONLY DOING TWO MONTHS AT A TIME UNTIL

THINGS GET BETTER.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE:

Social Distancing and Hiking with the Olympians

As we get started (at last) with hikes again it’s important that we agree to a few

protocols to follow during this challenging time. What you do during ‘non-club’ hikes is

up to you but while hiking as an “Olympian” this is what we’d like to follow:

Come prepared: Don’t share food, water bottles, or anything else. Basically, if

you’ve touched it, no-one else should. Use hand sanitizer. Bring a mask for any

instance in which social distancing of 6 feet is not practical, e.g., the trail becomes

crowed.

Carpooling: Except for members of the same household or already established

carpool partnerships, we won’t be carpooling to trailheads for the time being.

Even if everyone wears a mask inside the vehicle it quickly fills with aerosols, has

too many common surfaces, and you cannot properly socially distance in a car.

At the trailhead: Normally the trails we hike are not so crowded that we need a

‘plan B’ but it might be a good idea for the leader of the hike to have one just in

case.

On the trail: Keep 6 feet of distance between you and other hikers. When

encountering other hikers, trail etiquette states that the person moving uphill has

the right of way but right now whoever can safely step off the trail to allow for 6

feet of distance should do so.

If you feel a cough or a sneeze: Cover Your Mouth using the crook of your

elbow or handkerchief. Even outdoors! In very cold weather you can easily see

how your exhaled breath hangs in the air so---CYM!!

Stopping to Chat: Two groups of hikers encounter each other and stop on

opposite sides of the trail to chat. That creates a gauntlet of aerosols and other

hikers may have to hike through. Be aware and don’t do that.

Thanks,

Hikes committee
