DEVELOPING LEADERS

EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP SERIES

(2)

PREVIOUSLY…

Oikonomos is the Greek word for Steward and it means a house manager.

• The job of a steward is to supervise other slaves and manage domestic affairs. • Stewards serve in FOUR capacities namely:

As trustees (2Cor. 4.1; Romans 1.14); As guardians (Jude vs 3); As transmitters of Apostolic

teaching (2Timothy 2.2); As managers (Luke 12.42-43).

Leaders are also shepherds (poimen) and they: provide food and rest, refresh and renew, lead the sheep in prepared paths, anoint the wounded or empower leadership, are

good and merciful to the end (Psalm 23).

• The Good shepherd: knows each sheep by name, is always with the sheep, protects the sheep, shows concern for lost sheep, seeks other sheep, leads the sheep, is prepared to die for the sheep (John 10.1-18; Isaiah 40.11)

• There are also lessons from the bad shepherd (Ezekiel 34.1-10, 17-22)

• Psalm 78.70-72 shows that a good shepherd must have integrity of heart and skilful hands.

DEVELOPING LEADERS: HOW?

Aim: Discover the significant ways in which leaders may be

developed.

Summary: There are four important levels in the process of

(5)

THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING LEADERS

• LEVEL ONE: PERSONAL BIBLE STUDY

• LEVEL TWO: BIBLE EXPOSITION

• LEVEL THREE: GROUP BIBLE STUDY

• LEVEL FOUR: LEADING BIBLE STUDY

• This requires dedication which can only be given by someone who is not treating

Christianity as an option or an accessory.

(6)

PERSONAL BIBLE STUDY

• It is not the one you do when you have a sermon to deliver.

• It is to be done daily at your brightest hour.

• You can have a study guide e.g. Truth for Today,

throughthescriptures.org, Video Bible Courses etc.

• Psalm 119.147-148. Without a personal, regular Bible Study, we

(7)

PERSONAL BIBLE STUDY

•Here is a useful format for your daily personal Bible Study:

(8)

BIBLE EXPOSITION

• This is speaking God’s word to others.

• While some have been gifted to be teachers, all have the

responsibility of teaching God’s word (Revelation 12.11).

• God has commanded preachers to preach the word and

also train others (2Timothy 4.1-4 and 2.2)

• The purpose of training others is so that they can pass on

(9)

GROUP BIBLE STUDY

•A group of people who are committed to each other and to the Word of God need

to help one another grow spiritually.

This is different from the church Bible classes. It is usually done in an informal

setting.

The goal of this kind of study is to mature believers.

It is usually a planned, progressive study through a preselected text.

The Program:

• Observe the text

(10)

DISCIPLING OTHERS

• The Great Commission asks us to make disciples and teach

them to observe all things Christ has commanded us.

• The only reason why a shepherd exists is the sheep. Acts

20.20,27-28 teaches:

• Guard yourself

• Protect the flock

• Help the flock

(11)

DISCIPLING OTHERS

• 1Peter 5.2-3 gives further imperatives leaders must follow

• Be willing and enthusiastic

• Do not be motivated by money or self-interest. • Do not be a boss-type personality.

• Be an example in word and life.

(12)

CONCLUSION

• J. Oswald Sanders, in his book, ‘Spiritual Leadership’ observed the

following:

It remains to be said that the training of leaders cannot be done by employing the techniques of mass production. It will require patient

and careful instruction and prayerful and personal guidance of the

individual over a considerable period. “Disciples are not

manufactured wholesale. They are produced one by one, because

someone has taken the pains to discipline, to instruct and enlighten, to nurture and train one that is younger.”

When a man is really marked out by God for leadership, He will see to it that he receives the necessary disciplines to make him

SPECIAL STUDY ON

EXAMPLE

(14)

STUDY ON EXAMPLE

Aim:

Study 4 Greek words translated “example” in the New Testament

and make application to biblical leadership.

Summary:

1. Four Greek words and their definition.

2. Example of Christ in Service, Obedience, Prayer,

Relationships, and in Suffering.

3. Example of Paul in handling controversy, in difficult

issues, in self discipline, and in pursuing life’s goal.

(15)

POWER TO INFLUENCE OTHERS

There are two primary sources of the Servant-Leader’s power to

influence:

Lifestyle

Teaching.

The reality of the word of God is expressed through lifestyle and

teaching of the Servant-Leader (1Timothy 4.16)

The Spiritual Leader who is a servant does not demand. He serves.

By Serving, he sets an example that has compelling power to

(16)

THE EXCELLENCE OF EXAMPLE

HUPODEIGMA (John 13.15)—Something that is ‘proposed for imitation or admonition.

• It means to give a law upon, to give a word upon. They were to see a principle in what He had done and not simply the activity.

HUPOGRAMMOS (1PETER 2.21-23)—A copy to write after, for imitation. Jesus gave us a life to copy.

MIMOMAI (1CORINTHIANS 11.1)—’Follow as an example, strive to resemble.’

(17)

THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST

• IN SERVICE (JOHN 13)

• The example of the Slave’s towel

• Service of the towel versus service of the robe. • IN OBEDIENCE (John 4.34; 6.38; Matthew 26.39) • IN PRAYER

• At His baptism. Luke 3.21

• All night before selecting the Twelve (Luke 6.12-13) • In private (Luke 9.18)

• For Peter who was about to falter (Luke 22.32)

• In the garden when He felt His relationship to God was threatened (Luke 22.41,44) • On the cross for the people crucifying Him (Luke 23.46).

(18)

THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST

• IN RELATIONSHIPS

• With Sinners—the woman taken in adultery, the Publican, the lady washing His feet with her tears and wiping them with her hair. Matthew 9.11; 11.19

• With Children—You can tell the depth of a person’s character by how he deals with children (Mark 10.13-16).

• With disciples (Mark 3.14) Spent time with them. Stayed with them. Cared for them.

• With women (John 1; 4; 8; 19.25-27; 20.1-18)—His mother, Samaritan Woman. Woman taken in adultery, Mary Magdalene and other women.

• IN SUFFERING

• Chose to be poor (2Corinthians 8.9)

• No house or bed of His own (Luke 9.58)

(19)

THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST

EXTREME EXAMPLE FOR US (1PETER 2.21-23)

• NO SIN

• NO DECEIT

• NO RETALIATION

• NO THREATS

(20)

THE EXAMPLE OF PAUL

• In handling controversial matters (1 Corinthians 8).

a. Christians have been given knowledge – knowledge puffs up – you cannot handle it by knowledge (v. 1).

b. Only one true and living God – (vs. 4-6).

c. Idols have no real existence – you have that knowledge but do not use this knowledge to hurt the weak (vs. 4-5).

(21)

THE EXAMPLE OF PAUL

In the difficult issue of freedom and rights (1 Corinthians 9).

a. Freedom defended – Do not use your rights if the brother

is going to be hurt and if souls are not going to be won (vs.

1-14).

c. Share in His sufferings (v. 12).

d. Press on toward the goal (vs. 13-14).

(24)

OTHER NEW TESTAMENT LEADERS

1. Timothy:

a. Young (1 Timothy 4:12). b. Sickly (1 Timothy 5:23). c. Timid (2 Timothy 1:7). d. Frightened (2 Timothy 1:6-7; 2:1).

YET

Notice the following from 1 Timothy 4

Be an example (vs. 11-12). Devote yourself (v. 13).

(25)

OTHER NEW TESTAMENT LEADERS

2. Titus (Titus 2.6-7).

(26)

HOW LEADERS RECEIVE SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY

Leaders must Submit Themselves to the Lord and to His

Word

1. They are God’s servants serving God’s people.

2. They do not aim to attract a following.

3. They do not demand obedience (even by quoting proof

texts).

(27)

HOW LEADERS RECEIVE SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY

Leaders Will Have Their Authority and Ministry Tested Both

by Men and the Forces of Darkness

1. Numbers 12 – Miriam and Aaron against Moses.

2. Numbers 14 – The people against Moses.

3. Amos 7:10-15 – Amaziah against Amos.

(28)

HOW LEADERS RECEIVE SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY

Leaders Will Be Seen by Their Love and Example

Leaders’ True Authority Will Be Displayed in Practical Service

(1 Corinthians 16:15, 18; Philippians 2) – Timothy and

CONCLUSION

Hebrews 13:7: “Remember your leaders, those who spoke

to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their life,

and imitate their faith.”

Hebrews 13:17: “Obey your leaders and submit to them; for

they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will

have to give account. Let them do this joyfully, and not

sadly, for that would be of no advantage to you.”
