2013 Diabetes

Nursing Conference

General Information

Conference description and goals

The incidence of diabetes is increasing at concerning rates with an estimated one in three Americans anticipated to have Type 2 diabetes by 2050 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Diabetes self-management education, with a focus on behavior change, has been found to be effective for persons with diabetes. Nurses and other healthcare providers who are up-to-date with diabetes management and education have opportunities throughout the healthcare

continuum to help persons with diabetes. Areas for self-management and behavior change are summarized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators AADE7 Self Care Behaviors™: Healthy Eating, Being Active, Monitoring, Taking

Medications, Problem Solving, Healthy Coping, and Reducing Risks. Each of these areas will be addressed during the conference. Breakout sessions will allow attendees to individualize their learning opportunities based on their areas of interest and current knowledge level.

The goals of the conference are to:

• Emphasize the importance of diabetes self-management.

• Identify ways for patients to apply the AADE7™ to their life styles. • Increase exposure to technology and advances in the field of diabetes.

• Increase awareness of the challenges and opportunities experienced by people living with diabetes.
