Tips for online learning

Create a dynamic agenda and think about how to present content in a variety of ways –

use videos of yourself and from other reliable resources.

Make it interactive – it can be easy to fall into silos when working independently. Think of

ways that you can encourage students to constantly engage with the content and think critically as they work. Build in “think time” for students to reflect and jot down ideas, and create prompts and tasks for them to apply content presented as the module moves along. • Recommend Pacing – to help with time management and to keep all students to a similar

timeline you could suggest pacing for completion of modules, which gives a structure to maintain whilst allowing for flexibility.

Assign clear deliverables – by providing clear instructions with clear deliverables,

students will better manage their own progression through the module. Clear deliverables will help students reflect on their learning, provide peer feedback, and receive teacher feedback.

Provide regular feedback. Feedback is important in any learning situation, but this

becomes more challenging with virtual learning. It could be very easy for students to misunderstand or fall behind. Think about building in check-points to ensure students are mastering new content.

Using SAGE Research Methods in online learning

Use the Download PDF option to create a folder of resources on your memory stick or

computer desktop to make it easy to access your material to read offline. You can also use third-party tools to annotate these documents.

Add content to your virtual learning environment (VLE) or learning management system

(LMS) by adding a URL to the resource page, which will also help you track usage of your course materials.

Use content creatively to add in test questions, quizzes or discussion boards to encourage

deeper learning and to ensure students engage with the content

Use screenshots and images from the database to help make your content more visually

appealing

Create a Profile to make reading lists of recommended resources to share with students

Use videos to provide alternative viewpoints and supplement your own teaching and learning

Embed videos into your virtual learning environment (VLE) and create video clips to show
