COURSE DESCRIPTION

This training course will enable Medical Examiners the ability to interpret and apply the Federal rules for commercial motor vehicle drivers and motor coach driver medical examinations, ensuring that drivers are physically and mentally fit to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). The National Registry for Certified Medical Examiner Program requires that medical examiners performing commercial driver and medical driver examinations be trained and certified before May 21, 2014.

STATEMENT OF NEED

New standards of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), National Registry for Certified Medical Examiners have created a need for healthcare providers to demonstrate new knowledge to support for Commercial Driver Medical Examiner Training Courses prior to May 21, 2014. This course is provided to Advanced Practice Nurses and Physicians to identify the new knowledge/standards of FMCSA and elevate their current knowledge through this specific review course designed to elevate their current competency to interpret and apply new knowledge in preparing for the recertification and certification requirements of the FMCSA.

The content in this training program meets the requirements in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) final rule for the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (National Registry) Core Curriculum Specifications. In accordance with 49 CFR 390.105(b), this training includes the eight topics which must be covered in the core curriculum specifications.

Following completion of this training, participants will receive the proof of training certificate required to take the NRCME examination.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course has been designed for Advanced Practice Nurses and Physicians.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

 Perform driver certification examinations in accordance with FMCSA physical qualification requirements and medical guidelines.

 Apply knowledge of FMCSA’s driver essential job functions, physical qualifications standards and advisory criteria to findings gathered during the driver’s medical examination.

 Document with accuracy the medical history and physical examination findings on the Medical Examination Report and the Driver’s Medical Certification Card certifying a driver for an appropriate duration interval.

 Describe the physical and mental qualification requirements for commercial drivers using the 13 standards and Medical Expert Panel Guidance materials to determine driver medical fitness for duty.

 Discuss the process for the FMCSA Waiver, Exemption and the Skill Performance Evaluation (SPE) Certification Programs for commercial drivers who cannot otherwise qualify to drive.

 Promote health and wellness strategies to reduce potential risk to public safety for the CMV driver.

* The learning objectives listed above apply to nurse practitioners and registered nurses in addition to physicians.

ACCREDITATION

Physicians (ACCME)

USF Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

USF Health designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurse Practitioners:

AANPCP accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME.

Nurses (ANCC):

USF Health is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

A maximum of 6.5 contact hour may be earned by learners who successfully complete this continuing nursing education activity.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUND

Cancellations must be requested in writing via fax to 813-224-7864 or in writing via e-mail to Office of Continuing Professional Development, cpdsupport@health.usf.edu and received by January 16, 2014 in order to receive a refund. A $100 cancellation fee will be assessed to cover administrative costs. There are no refunds for no-shows or for cancellations received after January 16, 2014. USF Health reserves the right to cancel this activity due to unforeseen circumstances. In the event of such cancellation, only the registration fee will be returned to the registrant. USF Health will not be responsible for travel expenses incurred by the participant in case of cancellation. Fees include syllabus, certificate of attendance, food and beverage functions. No registration will be confirmed without full payment.
