The state of energy today:

What every operator must know.

(2)

As mobile operators seek new ways to meet the ever-increasing need for

bandwidth today and in the future, they face many challenges: evolving

technology and new applications; the growth of connected devices,

predicted to reach 50 billion by 2020; and an insatiable demand for

mobile video, just to name a few.

All of this requires more bandwidth, which, in turn, requires more energy

as well as steep investments in network infrastructure—money that service

providers must find a way to recoup.

The energy required to fuel this bandwidth brings its own inherent

challenges: energy grids that grow less reliable every year; energy costs

that escalate annually; and energy demands that are quickly outgrowing

supplies.

It could all add up to an energy—and financial—crisis.

What every operator must know.

The state of energy today

Or it could be one of the

biggest opportunities for

your network in years.

What the Future Holds:

More Energy Challenges Ahead

for Mobile Operators.

• Overall energy demands continue to rise

• Increasingly stringent emissions standards

• Escalating fossil fuel costs • Difficulty securing permits to bring

diesel generators into communi-ties

• Lower cost and higher availability of hydrogen contrasted with the increasing cost of diesel fuel • Continued consumer pressure for

CO2 emission reductions and greater corporate responsibility • IEA “450” program suggests

ag-gressive emission reduction efforts globally

Top 10 ways to

reduce energy

costs and help

future-proof

your networks.

1. Reduce the power

consumption associated

with cooling shelter

systems.

There are two simple ways to reduce power consumption in this area of your network: supplementing air conditioners for shelters with free-air cooling solutions and hybrid cooling techniques for outside plant enclosures.

Free-air cooling solutions shorten the length of time an air conditioner must run to cool equipment while still operating in safe equipment temperature ranges. This can help reduce the overall power consumption required to run your cell site by as much as 25%.

The CommScope design

perspective: Combining innovation

and energy conservation

.

At CommScope, our design approach is simple: find new, innovative ways to help our customers do more with less. For example, field trials and early deployments of our free-air cooling solutions demonstrate reductions of as much as 75% of the cooling costs. With two-fan and four-fan sizes, our free-air cooling system gives you flexibility for shelter size variances. And you can choose the filter specification and filter rating that meet your air quality standards:

• MERV-11 filter: The telecom stan-dard for shelter air cooling, this filter is 65% efficient for particulate sizes of 1.0 to 3.0 microns.

• MERV-14 filter: This filter is 80% ef-ficient for particulate sizes of 0.3 to 1.0 microns.

• MERV-16 filter: At 95% efficient for a particulate size of 0.3 microns, this filter would stop smoke particulates and prevent a smoke detector from being triggered. It also meets the GR-487 air quality standard to resist salt-fog.

3. Find a more efficient

conversion from AC to DC

power.

High-efficiency rectifiers improve efficiency of AC to DC conversion from 89% to greater than 94%—resulting in energy cost savings as much as $1,500 per site, per year.

In addition to hybrid cooling of enclosures to reduce energy consumption, CommScope integrates the latest generation of power rectifiers in our power and battery backup solutions to help you realize lower energy consumption and greater cost savings.

4. Identify, replace or

upgrade inefficient,

energy-wasting, CO

-emitting backup power

equipment.

Now that we all better understand the true impact of energy-wasting equipment, many operators are looking for ways to build energy efficiency into their network at every stage of design and implementation. For example, operators are reducing CO2 emissions by using hydrogen fuel cells for backup power instead of batteries and diesel generators—which also helps reduce power consumption by eliminating trickle charging required to keep batteries charged.

Fuel cell backup power

CommScope fuel cell backup power solutions were designed specifically for telecom applications and work with our sophisticated hybrid cooling techniques. With 5kW, 8kW, 10kW and 16kW versions of our fuel cell, you can easily optimize and match our solutions to meet the backup requirements of your cell site.

Our fuel cell solutions allow you to: • Meet the most stringent environmental

standards for outdoor enclosures and protect your electronic equipment from the outside environment through the use of closed-loop cooling techniques. • Fully integrate your primary power and

any necessary electronic equipment before being shipped to a cell site—re-ducing your site construction costs and time to startup.

• Lower overall maintenance costs and increase flexibility in scheduling and ship-ping of fuel cells to cell sites since there are no monthly fuel cell hydration cycles. • Reduce maintenance when compared to

competing technologies—almost eliminat-ing maintenance labor and costs associ-ated with maintaining traditional backup power solutions.

• use less real estate—resulting in lower site leasing expenses—with our fuel cells’ industry-leading power density.

5. Upgrade inefficient,

energy-wasting equipment and

network designs.

You might be surprised to learn that one of the largest energy-consuming resources on a cell site is the power amplification unit of the radio system. While power amplification is necessary to overcome RF losses as signals are transmitted to the top of the tower, the associated energy consumption is costly— and avoidable.

Today, new base station architectures using remote radio heads and hybrid remote fiber feeder cables can significantly reduce the total power load of a cell site—as much as 33% in deployments implemented by CommScope.

Our research shows that customers who deploy CommScope’s remote radio heads with our high-performance hybrid remote fiber feeder cable significantly reduce their energy consumption and realize additional savings, too:

• Reduce cable costs up to 40-50%. One RFF cable per sector can save up to 40-50% of the cable cost per installation compared to typical 6-runs of transmission line.

• Reduce tower loading by up to 40%. This helps you free up capacity for more antennas. • Reduce installation time by as much as 60-70%.

Installation can be performed faster and more easily with routing in the enclosure and on the tower.

• Reduce long-term CapEx/OpEx. Future-proof your technology with built-in potential to expand your network if and when you need it.

6. Reduce truck rolls

and associated labor

costs.

Spending money on truck rolls and labor for site visits doesn’t make sense for the bottom line or the environment. Today, operators are increasingly turning to advanced monitoring and control to perform repairs and maintenance right from the office—saving money on fuel costs and reducing CO2 emissions.

CommScope provides advanced technology such as OneBase InSite®

Connect, which allows operators to monitor battery strength, manage BTS building temperatures, decrease diesel fuel losses and reduce truck rolls. Implementing OneBase InSite® Connect

also further reduces power consumption by monitoring site conditions and providing remote alerts when alarms and operating conditions are out of normal range.

In addition, when CommScope’s advanced monitoring and control system is used for shelter cooling, the same control system can be used to allow for remote RET control, site video surveillance, diesel fuel monitoring, site troubleshooting, and reduced site visits for false alarms. This capability can help you solve other cell site challenges through intelligent remote site management.

7. Lower energy

consumption associated

with shipping and

handling.

One way to reduce energy consumption that is often overlooked in our industry: shipping costs. When solution providers reduce packing density and design products to be smaller and lighter—with the same high performance as larger-size products—we can all work together to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions associated with shipping.

CommScope helps our customers reduce shipping costs and subsequent CO2 emissions in a number of innovative ways: • Operators can save up to 40% of the

space required to ship antennas with our innovative microwave antenna packag-ing, significantly reducing the energy consumption per antenna shipped. • Our HELIAX® FXL smooth-walled

alu-minum cable is designed to be 20% lighter than traditional corrugated copper cable—resulting in lower shipping costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions, as less energy is required to ship the cable to cell sites.

8. Effectively manage

PIM.

In the past, when operators needed capacity, they simply built more cell sites or added more equipment to their current sites. Today, this approach is inefficient and unpractical: tower space is limited; adding new cell sites is costly; and the CapEx and OpEx investments can’t be justified on limited budgets.

One solution: Find new, more effective

ways to increase capacity.

passive Inter-modulation (pIM) noise is one of the biggest contributors to poor cell site capacity—making pIM management a top priority for wireless operators. When you can improve pIM, you improve data throughput, and this, in turn, helps improve capacity and conserve energy. Furthermore, if you can improve the capacity of your current cell site, you can reduce energy costs by eliminating the need for additional towers and radios. At CommScope, we work with our customers to help them minimize the impact of pIM and improve the capacity of their cell sites. Recently, pIM audits and optimizations resulted in one customer improving throughput by as much as 6X—eliminating the need for, and cost of, adding more radios or cell sites.

9. Manage and control

antenna tilt and beam

patterns on a cell site

based on traffic loads.

Traditionally, when operators needed to increase coverage and capacity, they would install additional towers and radios. Today it’s more critical than ever for operators to make better use of existing resources—to do more with what they already have. This requires investing in intelligent solutions that are also more energy efficient.

SmartBeam: Maximize system

capacity quickly, easily and

intelligently.

Managing the tilt and beam patterns on a cell site to optimize coverage and capacity results in significantly less power consumption when compared to installing additional towers and radios. SmartBeam Antenna Systems from CommScope enable you to continually sense and re-distribute traffic evenly across all sectors, so you can make better use of the existing resources. SmartBeam is an innovative technology that helps you:

• Maximize system capacity by rotating the site, narrowing the beam of over-loaded cells and widening the beam of under-utilized cells.

• Eliminate the cost to manually optimize systems with the ability to remotely optimize Azimuth direction and beam width.

• Load-balance uneven traffic distribu-tion, reducing the need for additional towers and radios.

10. Amplify power

more efficiently when

adding carriers and

new technology to a

cell site.

When upgrading a cell site, traditional methods of power amplification are not typically energy efficient—which can increase energy costs exponentially. using low-energy-loss power cable and more efficient power amplifiers, such as MCpAs from CommScope, can help reduce your overall cell site power load by as much as 20 to 30%.
