Attendance – This course is 100% online. However, besides reading the textbook, students MUST log onto MyPsychLab every week to view video clips, and take exams online. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is intended to provide a historical overview of abnormal psychology with emphasis on current paradigms and models in psychopathology and therapy including a survey of research methodology; clinical assessment, classification, and diagnosis with special focus on cultural, gender, and age issues in psychopathology and therapy.

FINAL COURSE GRADE: will be based on

 Taking 15 chapter exams for all the assigned chapters worth 10 points each taken as specified below for a total of 150 points.

 Paper #1 on Cognitive Therapy worth 50 points

 Paper #2 Research Paper on a Mental Disorder worth 50 points

TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE FOR THE COURSE = 250

These points determine FINAL COURSE GRADE: Paper #1: A = 45-50 points B = 38-44 C = 28-36 D = 20-27 F = 19 and below and Paper #2 A = 45-50 points B = 38-44 C = 28-36 D = 20-27 F = 19 and below and

15 Required Weekly Chapter Exams:

(15 exams x 10 points each = 150 points possible)

(All you have to do to earn 10 points for each exam is take them ON TIME! and score 70% or above. If you miss an exam, take it late, or score 69% or below, you will receive 0 points for the exam. NO EXCEPTIONS.)

GRADE for Psych 4 course: A = 240-250 total points B = 226-239

C = 180-225 D = 166-179 F = 165 and below

Be prepared to spend at least 12 hours per week using and studying course materials.

How to Get Started-Watch Your Deadlines!

1. Register for the Psychology 4 course at De Anza College.

2. Complete the Online Orientation through the De Anza College Distant Learning website and submit the Student Information Form by 5:00 pm Friday, Jan. 10. If you do not make that deadline, you might be dropped from the course. Be ready to give your email address that you will use ALL quarter. All email correspondence with your instructor will happen with that same email address, so please keep it the same. Online Orientation may be found at:

3. Purchase the course text and materials.

4. Register onto the MyPsychLab website by 11:59 pm Friday, Jan. 10 using your access code. This is where the Psy 4 course happens completely ONLINE. The course does NOT happen on Catalyst. If you do not make that deadline, you might be dropped from the course.

5. Start your studies.

Exams (worth 150 points total)

See instructions on last page of syllabus. I will be checking to see that you are taking them each week. You must take the chapter exams on time and earn a 70% or above score in order to earn the 10 points for each exam. If you score anything 69% or below, take an exam late or fail to take an exam, you will lose 10 points per exam. If you take All of the chp. exams on time and earn a 70% or above, you will earn a total of 150 points. NO MAKE-UP exams. No exceptions. As a distant learner you MUST organize your time and keep to the deadlines.

If you submit your paper to ANY other email address, you will not get credit for your paper.

In the subject line of the email, please write, for example “Megan Nguyen’s Psych 4 Paper #1”

Please simply copy and paste the paper right into the body of the email. If you send it in another format, you will not get credit for your paper. All papers should be 5 pages, font size of 12, spell-checked, and college level paper. They are due by 11:59pm on their due dates.

Please cite at least 4 resources that you used on a separate bibliography page. Use your textbook and at least 3 other resources, such as:

these terms mean:

Aaron Beck, Cognitive Triad of Depression, Albert Ellis, Rational Emotive Therapy. Martin Seligman. “Learned Helplessness”.

Also, see chp. 8 page 269, Table 8.6 on Cognitive Distortions and Rational Responses.

Think about any Automatic Thoughts you have had in the past or still do have.

For example, you may write it like this: Automatic Thought:

I just do not have the brains for college. Kind of Cognitive Distortion:

Labeling and mislabeling Rational Response:

Stop calling yourself names like stupid. I can accomplish a lot more than I give myself credit for.

Then write several sentences explaining:

What do you say to yourself? What is the type of situation in which you say that to yourself. Which emotions are you feeling when you say that to yourself? What is the Kind of Cognitive Distortion(s) that cognitive

therapists would say you are using? Are you aware that you do this? What are some Rational Responses you have learned or can learn now that you are more aware that you may be using some irrational and negative automatic

you.

Use your text reading, videos, flashcards and any other resources on MyPsychLab to help you explain these terms well. Use your own analytical skills and what you have learned from Cognitive Therapy to examine your cognitive distortions and how you can use more rational responses. Psych 4 Paper #2 DUE:

Friday March 21

on a Mental Disorder (worth a maximum of 50 points): Write a research

paper on one of the Mental Disorders that was OR was NOT covered in this

course. You may choose which Mental Disorder you will explore in this paper. Describe the symptoms, typical onset (do we know from research what age

this disorder typically begins?), prognosis (for this given disorder, what are

we looking at? How will it progress? How long will it last? How does it typically respond to treatment), and what are effective treatments? According to the new DSM 5, how would this disorder be classified (for example a personality disorder, a mood disorder, etc.). On which Axis would it be written on the DSM diagnosis? Why did you choose this topic (ie, you saw it in a movie, or it has affected someone you know, or you always wondered about it, etc.) Discuss the ramifications for friends or family members of a person who has this disorder. How are they impacted? Are there any misconceptions among the general public about this disorder? Email to lindahurkmans@sbcglobal.net

If you are having trouble please flag your email with “questions on the assignment” or “help needed with the Psy 4 Online Paper” or something to that effect. That way I don’t just think you are submitting your assignment and fail to respond quickly.
