PASTORAL MESSAGE
In the mid 1970’s, if you listened to WPLM, 99.5 on “the FM dial,” you’d hear sounds from the Big Band era to the early 1950’s with greats such as Tommy
Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and of course the crooners. The station is based in Plymouth and could be heard throughout the South Shore. However, if you had a powerful enough radio you’d also hear it in Gloucester and Rockport as well as all of Cape Cod, Boston and points in Metro-West, as well as New Bedford, Acushnet, and Dartmouth. Since it had an audience that included vacationers to the Cape, beginning in late May you’d often hear jingles from Cape Cod restaurants hoping to entice vacationers to their establishments. Hearing the jingles was a sign summer was near. You’d hear that at the Lobster Claw Restaurant there was “great dining by the sea” because “we’re all one family.” If someone asked you “Who’s cooking breakfast as fast as he can?” you would answer the Pancake Man, knowing you’d find the Pancake Man on Route 28 in Yarmouth. The most beloved of the jingles sounded almost like a tune you’d hear on WPLM. A man whose voice was similar to Andy Williams sang, “Hey, where ya going?” followed by the woman with a voice like Rosemary Clooney singing “I’m going to Thompson’s Clam Bar ‘cuz that’s where the tastiest clams are.” If you know the jingle, you may be singing it in your head as you read these words. If you’re not familiar with it and wonder how effective it was, Thompson’s closed its original location at Wychmere Harbor in Harwichport in 1995 but people can still sing the jingle.
For many years, Thompson’s Clam Bar was the busiest restaurant on Cape Cod, serving as many as two thousand customers a day. The staff was instantly recognizable. The waitresses wore red dresses with a white kerchief and apron. The waiters and busboys wore a red shirt, white belt, and navy blue pants. Most of the wait staff were college students often from the best colleges and universities in the country. When you arrived, there was valet parking, and the young people who parked your cars were often college runners from the schools with the best track programs. You always had to wait for a table, but you were given cheddar cheese and crackers and if you liked, you could have “little necks” that were shucked by a man who looked like the old Cape “salt” type of fisherman who I believe was a landlubber who taught history at one of the local high schools during the off season. The restaurant itself was located on a dock. Most customers ordered the seafood, especially the fried clams. Lobster was a favorite and they were known for their steaks too. Clam chowder was a must and you didn’t leave without having a parfait for dessert. Boats often pulled up to the dock and you could enjoy a meal from the comfort of your own vessel. The boats often had celebrities. Kennedys were pretty frequent customers by boat and you might see celebrities performing at the Cape
Playhouse in Dennis or the Cape Cod Melody Tent enjoying a meal on a boat.
So, why the trip down Memory Lane and Thompson’s Clam Bar? This past week had temperatures in the 90’s and a meal at a restaurant located on a dock with cool sea breezes is a pleasant thought, but believe it or not, it has to do with mustard seeds and their growth. Let me explain. Thompson’s was more than a restaurant, it was a destination and an experience. A nautical atmosphere was created with wonderful service and countless vacation memories took place at Thompson’s. Now a bit of information about mustard plants in areas located around the Mediterranean and Middle East. As is so often the case, Jesus uses a common image in a parable that has a simple meaning, but when explored a bit has a deeper meaning as well. The mustard seeds that Jesus speaks of being planted were intentionally planted. The more the mustard plants grew, the more fertile the area which was seen as assurance there would be enough crops at harvest time, a sign of God’s providence. The “birds of the air” building nests and finding a home was a reminder that as God cared for even the smallest of creatures, God cares for us too. The plants grew and grew, not so much in height as length. They became like shrubs which could form borders and created gardens. Gardens were places which were more than just where plants grew, especially for Jewish people who believed the origins of humanity took place in the Garden of Eden. Gardens were a destination, time spent was an experience, a place where people gathered and went to relax. As we see in many cases, especially in the ministry of Jesus, people prayed in gardens. Gardens were meant to be places of peace and safety. When Jesus spoke of the growth of the mustard seed, he was talking not just about individual faith, but collective faith as well, collective faith being the Church, and if we look at it today, a parish. Imagine if every person in parishes everywhere planted seeds of faith, how that parish would grow. It would expand in such a way that it offered all kinds of services and activities. It would be a place of welcome and where people found a home. Most of all it would be an experience, and in that experience, people would meet God, commit to being followers of Jesus Christ, and would be moved by the Holy Spirit to bring those gifts to a world that needs it.
As the temperatures this past week remind us, summer is upon us. Summer can be a time we relax a bit and enjoy life, but it’s also a time we gear up for the fall. Maybe a good use of the summer may be thinking of ways we can continue to plant mustard seeds and plant new seeds, so to speak, doing so as a parish. What gifts, talents, and things do we have to offer? How can we make our parishes continue to grow, making it an experience and helping others grow in faith? If we do this, think of the ways St. Patrick and Sacred Heart will spread the Gospel, continue to be places where people experi-ence God’s love, and effectively be the presexperi-ence of Jesus Christ in the Watertown area.
