Compaq Batch Scheduler for Windows NT is an enterprise job scheduler that brings mainframe level processing to the Windows NT and Windows 2000 environments. Batch Scheduler enables users to schedule jobs to launch automatically at defined times. It also enables users to create dependencies between jobs so that, for example, one job doesn't launch until another has finished. Batch Scheduler provides easy job monitoring, allowing users to determine which jobs have completed and which ones are in progress.

• It creates schedules of jobs to launch automatically at defined times, saving labor costs and enabling full utilization of existing computer resources. • It provides an easy to use graphical interface for drag and drop job creation and scheduling, eliminating the need for command line entries. • It is designed for, and fully integrated with the Windows NT environment.
• It now includes support for Windows 2000.
• Supports a multi-platform environment. Jobs can be launched on Windows NT or Windows 2000 and run on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 98, UNIX or OpenVMS systems.
Centralized job scheduling on multiple platforms: Batch Scheduler provides centralized scheduling and monitoring from Windows NT or Windows 2000. It also supports the execution of batch jobs on systems running Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Open VMS™, Compaq Tru64™ UNIX®, Sun Solaris®, IBM® AIX®, and HP-UX®.
Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) failover: The Automated Process Scheduler (APS) component of Batch Scheduler can failover from one node to another in an MSCS environment. Although Batch Scheduler can operate in a cluster environment, it is not customer aware.
Standard SNMP traps to log events: Batch Scheduler uses standard SNMP traps so you can log event and error information directly to enterprise management packages, such as Tivoli™ or HP OpenView®.
Easy to use visual user interface: The visual development and deployment graphical user interface provides alternatives for many user activities. For instance, the Coordinator allows you to schedule jobs by dragging and dropping schedules, processes, calendars, machines and notifications. Extensive reporting capability: The History Report and Audit Report logs provide complete information about everything that has happened during schedule execution. The What runs When report shows you the schedule of production runs for a particular day. Additional reports include: • Schedules and Jobs based on date, owner, schedule name or APS.
• Run-time Summary for all schedules or processes. • Run-time Snapshot for current schedules or processes. • Job Performance for schedule or processes.
Command-line interface: Available to create, launch, monitor, and control schedules and processes from a DOS command prompt or script.
Load balancing: Job loads can be spread over multiple target machines to minimize the time needed to execute a schedule. A job can be directed to run on the first available machine, a specific machine, or the most available machine. Job loads can be spread over multiple target machines to minimize the time it takes to execute a schedule.
Security: On Windows 2000 and Windows NT systems, you can choose between the Windows NT and Batch Scheduler security models. The Windows NT security model (NTLM) validates users as Windows 2000 or Windows NT users. The Batch Scheduler security model requires only that users be members of the CBS Users group. Both types of security support CBS Users privilege options.
Database support: Batch Scheduler supports ODBC, so you can store your schedules and history information in a variety of databases.
Remote job communications: The local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) capability allows you to manage jobs remotely using TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, or NETBUI, regardless of where your systems are located.

In its simplest configuration, Compaq Batch Scheduler needs two software licenses. Your Compaq Batch Scheduler Version v2.1 for Windows NT package includes two licenses to get you started.
A simple configuration uses the two licenses as follows: One license for the Automated Process Scheduler (APS)
The APS is the background scheduling engine that delegates jobs to your Windows 2000, Windows NT, UNIX, or OpenVMS machines that are running Compaq Batch Scheduler Sentinel components.
One license for each Sentinel
The Sentinel is the component that starts, monitors, and stops jobs on the machine where it is running. These are the Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98, UNIX, and OpenVMS machines that execute your batch jobs.
You might want to buy additional Compaq Batch Scheduler licenses for Sentinel components. Each machine running batch programs (that is, each machine using a Sentinel component) requires its own license. You can purchase Compaq Batch Scheduler for Windows NT licenses singly, or in groups of 25 and 100.
When you purchase an APS or Sentinel license, Compaq grants you unlimited use of the other four components in Compaq Batch Scheduler for Windows NT: the Administrator, Monitor, Visual Script, and Coordinator. You can install these components on any number of systems for use in conjunction with the licensed APS or Sentinel. The number of installations and uses of the Administrator, Monitor, Visual Script, and Coordinator can exceed the number of APS and Sentinel licenses combined.
