Before joining the Board of Directors for 211 Brevard, I reached out to 211 Brevard on two occasions for information on local family support groups and services. Each time, the Specialist listened to my concerns and provided several recommendations of places I could go for help. They were suggestions I never would have found on my own, and I’m pretty Google savvy.
When I was looking for a community organization to volunteer my time, I went to the United Way of Brevard for recommendations of three places where I could make a difference; they gave me one – 211 Brevard. After doing a little research and talking to the Director, Libby Donoghue, I knew how right the United Way
recommendation was.
211’s trained specialists are there to provide the level of caring and intervention that Brevard families need, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.. They are not there to judge, they are there to help.
Like many nonprofit organizations, 211 Brevard is struggling with a tough economy. Our county and state funding has been reduced, and we run at a deficit every month. In order to maintain services, we have had to work with a smaller staff and cut every expense that isn’t essential to keeping the doors open.
We could cut expenses by eliminating the overnight and weekend assistance, but in many ways this is one of our most important services. Where else can people turn at 9 p.m. when a crisis arises, or they finally have time to focus on their personal issues? What about on a Friday evening when someone is struck by an
overwhelming sadness and they think they need to end it all – should they just wait till Monday when they can start calling counselors for an appointment?
211 Brevard provides someone to talk to, helpful information, and appropriate intervention when needed.
For thousands of people every month, 211 Brevard provides crisis intervention & information on organizations and services. I can’t think of a better and more direct way to support all members of our community who are in need.

Helpline data are based on call records. One record may reflect multiple incoming or outgoing calls as well as multiple needs and referrals. Therefore, the total numbers of each of these categories may vary. The agency website supports our mission through regularly updated content, an e-library, community calendar and searchable online database & is therefore considered a service function.

Definitions
The people who respond to requests for information or assistance are not ‘operators’, but 2-1-1 Specialists. With over 50 hours of initial training, Specialists use active listening, crisis intervention and customer service skills to help callers identify feelings, issues, needs and obstacles & to help callers develop strategies for addressing their concerns.
Many helpline callers prefer to remain anonymous. Consequently “unknown” will frequently represent a significant percentage of responses in various demographic categories.
“Problem/Need” refers to the issues for which the caller sought assistance; “Contact Type” refers to the way in which 2-1-1 Specialists assisted callers, as follows:
o Information Provision: Limited or detailed data provided in response to a specific request
o Assessment & Referral: Assessing caller needs, identifying & reviewing potential resources &
providing sufficient information for the caller to make an informed choice about accessing services.
o Crisis & Suicide Intervention: Use of active listening & support to aid the caller in returning to his/her pre-crisis level of function. Suicide Risk Assessment skills are used when appropriate to identify &
reduce risk of self-harm.
o Other: Includes advocacy on behalf of callers needing additional assistance, follow-up for outcome or additional risk assessment, emergency intervention initiated for at-risk callers, administrative calls, wrong numbers, etc.
