Welcome & Intention: Rev Sharon Smith

Presider: Let us take a moment of stillness and remember why we are here.

Presider: We are here because of grace People: The grace of Jesus the Christ Presider: We are here because of Love People: The love of God

Presider: We are here to be in communion

People: the communion of the Spirit experienced in relationship.

Presider: We acknowledge with respect that we worship n the traditional and unceded territories of the Squamish and Tsleil-

Waututh nations. Let us pray that we may

live more deeply into the calls to action

from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation

Commission.

(4)

All: May the living Christ lead us all on pathways of reconciliation and peace

Prayer of the Day:

Presider: On this eve of the Day of the Saints, All: let us give honor to those who

hallowed this earth by their prayers and by the way they walked in the light of God.

Let us remember the giants of faith on whose shoulders we stand.

Amen

(5)

Gathering Hymn: All are Welcome

Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live,

a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive.

Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace;

here the love of Christ shall end divisions.

All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat:

a banquet hall on holy ground where peace and justice meet.

Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space;

as we share in Christ the feast that frees us.

All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where hands will reach beyond the wood and stone

to heal and strengthen, serve and teach,

and live the Word they’ve known.

(6)

Here the outcast and the stranger bear the image of God’s face;

let us bring an end to fear and danger.

All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard

and loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word.

Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace,

let this house proclaim from floor to rafter.

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

First Reading: Anam Cara by John O Donahue

The only difference between us and the dead is that they are now in an invisible form. You cannot see them with the

human eye. But you can sense the presence of those you love who have died. With the refinement of your soul, you can sense them. You feel that they are near.

My father used to tell us a story about a neighbor who was very friendly with the local priest. There is a whole mythology in Ireland about druids and priests having special power. But this man and the priest used to go for long walks. One day the man said to the priest, “Where are the dead?” The priest told him not to ask him questions like that. But the man persisted, and finally, the priest said, “I will show you; but you are never to tell anyone.” Needless to say, the man did not keep his

word. The priest raised his right hand; the man looked out under the raised right hand and saw the souls of the departed everywhere all around as thick as the dew on blades of grass.

Often our loneliness and isolation are the result of a failure of

spiritual imagination. We forget that there is no such thing as

empty space. All space is full of presence, particularly the

presence of those who are now in eternal, invisible form.

Poetry Response: All Hallows Blessing by Jan Richardson Who live

in the spaces between our breathing

in the corner of our vision in the hollows of our bones in the chambers of our heart:

nowhere can they be touched

yet still

how they move us, how they move in us,

made from the tissue of memory like the veil

between the worlds that stirs at

the merest breath this night

and then is

at rest.

(9)

Song of Response: What Wondrous Love is This What wondrous love is this, O my soul? O my soul!

What wonderous love is this, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss

to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul?

When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, when I was sinking down, sinking down,

when I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul,

Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing, to God and to the Lamb I will sing,

to God and to the Lamb who is the great I Am,

while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing, while millions join the theme, I will sing.

And when from death I’m free I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on,

and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be, and through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,

and through eternity I’ll sing on.

Second Reading: The Gospel of Mark 12:28-34

One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he

asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?"

Jesus answered, "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." Then the scribe said to him, "You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that 'he is one, and besides him there is no other'; and 'to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,' and 'to love one's neighbor as oneself,' --this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him,

"You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that no one

dared to ask him any question.

Reflections on All Hallows Eve Heather Luccock & Rev. Sharon

Silent Reflection:

The community are invited to respond in silent contemplation.

The time ends with the sound of a singing bowl.

(12)

Prayers of Concern:

Reflective Prayer for All Hallows Eve by Anne Richards and the Mission Theology Advisory Group, Church of England.

Leader: Lord, on this day,

All: We will face all that most concerns us:

our fears, the shadowed places of the mind; the coming of winter darkness;

the cold thin place between waking and sleep.

You are invited to express your prayers silently or aloud.

Leader: We call to mind the powerless, the lonely, those who most fear the knock at the door;

All: all those despairing because of empty promises; all those cowed by menaces or threats.

You are invited to express your prayers silently or aloud.

Leader: We stand with those weak in body, mind or spirit and those seduced by treats

or hurt by tricks.

All: Lord, your light shines into every

darkness. Your Spirit gives us hope, gives

us courage, a candle in the window

(13)

The Light of Peace & Remembrance

A member of the community lights a candle from the Altar light and walks it down the aisle and lights a votive candle at the back of the church.

Lighter: We light this candle in the name of the Creator.

We light this candle in the name of Christ.

We light this candle in the name of the Spirit.

May the peace of God – Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit be always with you,

and those you love.

People: And also with you.

The community are invited to gesture to one another a sign of peace, respecting social distancing.

You are invited to light candles of peace for those we love

but see no longer.

(14)

Preparing the Table: Because He Lives (Instrumental) The Eucharistic Prayer

(Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada: Setting IV) Presider: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Presider: Lift up you hearts.

All: We lift them up to the Lord.

Presider: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,

that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, merciful God, through our Jesus the Christ,

in whom our hope of resurrection dawns.

The sting of death has been removed by the glorious promise of risen life.

And so, with all the choir of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of

heaven, we praise your name and join their

unending hymn:

(15)

Sung Sanctus (St Brides setting) Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might, heaven and earth are full Are full of your glory.

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.

Praise to you for creating the heavens and the earth.

Praise to you for leading your people through the wilderness to the land of milk and honey.

Praise to you for the words and deeds of

Jesus, your anointed one.

(16)

Presider: Praise to you for your Spirit poured out on all nations.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Presider: With this bread and cup

we remember our Lord’s passover from

death to life as we proclaim the mystery of

faith:

(17)

Sending out Song: Here I Am, Lord

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save.

I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?

Refrain: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?

I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you need me.

I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain.

I have wept for love of them. They turn away.

I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send?

Refrain: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?

I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you need me.

I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.

I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied.
