GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER

NEW MEMBERS

The continued success of Dale City Moose Lodge 2165 depends on a strong and vibrant membership. With a strong membership, the men and women of the Moose support many local charities and youth groups as well as provide a variety of social activities.

Dale City Moose Lodge is fortunate to have a strong membership but, as members, we must never lose sight of the fact that there is strength in numbers! Our 2011-2012 membership drive began on May 1, 2011. We have 650 members now and our goal for this year is to enroll 98 new members. While we have success in adding new members, membership retention is harder to accomplish. During 2010-2011, 107 members have not renewed. If you know members who are on the arrears list in the monthly newsletter, please encourage them to renew.

We would really like to surpass the 185 new members who joined in 2010-2011 (fourth largest in the State). Ten new members have joined this year but, with a goal of 98, it will take the effort of each member to meet this goal. Please encourage friends to come to the lodge to experience the camaraderie and fund and then join as a member.

Chris Sarna continues to improve for which we are thankful. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Speaking of the Junior Gradual Regent reminds me of an oversight: Mother’s Day. Please accept our apologies and we hope you enjoy the make-up celebration on July 23rd.

Bob Skinner Governor

Congratulations to Bob Moore for receiving Moose Legionnaire of the Year for 2010-2011.

Thanks to Ken Grimm and Todd Palmer for cutting the grass and yard work; Mary Crawford and Ricke O’Connor for fixing the cash register; John VanParys and Todd Palmer for installing the exhaust fan in the kitchen; and to all who volunteer to help stock, empty trash, cook, and do everythng else to make this a successful Lodge.

July 28-31 WOTM Virginia Annual Conference, Richmond

Hello, Women of the Moose (WOTM) & WELCOME new members,

We have a couple of things going on this month to help support our cause:

July 6 is WOTM Wing Night. Every five weeks WOTM members volunteer their time to serve wings as one of the Mooseth teams. This is totally voluntary and all tips are donated to the WOTM for contribution to our charities. (If you would like to volunteer, just show up by 5 p.m. and we will put you to work.)

On July 11 and 25 WOTM meetings will be held at 7 p.m. I encourage all to come and check one out. If you have ath th cause or concern, this is a great time to express it.

The WOTM Virginia Annual Conference will be held in Richmond July 28-31. This is a great time for local lodges to meet one another and exchange ideas while having fun. For more information on this event, you can check out the pre-registration form on one of the many bulletin boards around the lodge. For this event we need old cell phones, their cords, and toner or ink cartridges.

The box is located in the foyer as you enter the lodge. Thank you to those who have already donated these items and thank you in advance for those who will be donating.

Due to the next couple of months being vacation season, we have decided to put Kids Craft Day on hold until September or October. Hope to see you all soon and have a safe summer.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this and hope to see some new faces.

Stephenie Collins For Senior Regent

If you cannot attend at meeting and would like to express an idea or concern, you may e-mail me: [email protected].

I will do my best to respond quickly.

DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP NEW MEMBERS. THERE ARE LOTS OF REWARDS AND BENEFITS.

ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION

What can be donated?

Organs: The organs of the body that can be transplanted at the current time are kidneys, heart, lungs, lever, pancreas, and the intestines.

Kidney/pancreas transplants, heart/lung transplants, and other combined organ transplants also are performed. Organs cannot be stored and must be used within hours of removing them from the donor’s body. Most donated organs are from people who have died, but a living individual can donate a kidney, part of the pancreas, part of a lung, part of the liver, or part of the intestine.

Tissue: Corneas, the middle ear, skin, heart valves, bone, veins, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments can be stored in tissue banks and used to restore sight, cover burns, repair hearts, replace veins, and mend damaged connective tissue and cartilage in recipients.

Stem Cells: Healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60 can donate blood stem cells. In order for a blood stem cell transplant to be successful, the patient and the blood stem cell donar must have a closely matched tissue type of human leukocyte antigen (HLA). Since tissue types are inherited, patients are more likely to find a matched donor within their own racial and ethnic group. There are three sources of blood stem cells that healthy volunteers can donate: (1) Marrow – This soft tissue is found in the interior cavities of the bones. It is a major site of blood cell production and is removed to obtain stem cells; (2) Peripheral blood stem cells – The same types of stem cells found in marrow can be pushed out into a donor’s bloodstream after the donor receives daily injections of a medication called filgrastim. This medication increases the number of stem cells circulating in the blood and provides a source of donor stem cells than can be collected in a way that is similar to blood donation; and (3) Cord blood stem cells – The umbilical cord that connected a newborn to the mother during pregnancy contains blood that has been shown to contain high levels of blood stem cells. Cord blood can be collected and stored in large freezers for a longer period of time and, therefore, offers another source of stem cells available for transplanting into patients.

Blood and Platelets: Blood and platelets are formed by the body, go through a life cycle, and are continuously replaced throughout life.

Because of this cycle, you can donate blood and platelets more than once. It is safe to donate blood every 56 days and platelets every four weeks.

Blood is stored in a blood bank according to type (A, B, AB, or O) and Rh factor (positive or negative). Blood can be used whole, or separated into packed red cells, plasma, and platelets, all of which have different lifesaving uses. It takes only about 10 minutes to collect a unit (one pint) of blood, although the testing and screening process means that you will be at the donation center close to an hour. Platelets are tiny cell fragments that circulate throughout the blood and aid in blood clotting. Platelets can be donated without donating blood. When a specific patient needs platelets, but does not need blood, a matching donor is found and platelets are separated from the rest of the blood which is returned to the donor. The donor’s body will replace the missing platelets within a few hours.

Who can donate an organ?

Just about anyone, at any age, can become an organ donor. Anyone who is younger than 18 must have the consent of a parent or guardian.

How can I become an organ donor?

! A family member of friend who has end-stage organ failure may ask you to donate an organ. As a living donor, you will work directly with the transplant team.

! You also can become a living donor by contacting a transplant center to find out who is in need of an organ.

! To donate your organs after death, you can register with the state’s donor registry. Go to www.organdonaor.gov. In the upper right hand corner, select your state. All information submitted will be used only by transplant professionals and will be kept completely confidential. If you are 13 to 18 years old, you can register for Donate Life Virginia, but your parents will make the final decision about organ and tissue donation at the appropriate time. You also need to inform your family, friends, and doctor that you are a donor.

! To donate your organs after death, you also can fill out an organ donor card when you get or renew your driver’s license.

If I become a living donor, will I have health problems in the future?

There are some organs you can give up all or part of without having long-term health issues. You can donate a whole kidney, or a part of the pancreas, intestine, liver, or lung. Your body will compensate for the missing organ or organ part. If it is determined that donating an organ would put your health at risk in the short term or long term, then you would not be able to donate.

Will I be paid for donating an organ?

No. It is illegal to pay someone for an organ. The transplant program, recipient’s insurance, or recipient should cover your expenses from tests and hospital costs related to a living donation. Some or all of your travel costs also may be covered.

Will my organ donation after death incur any costs to my family?

No. The costs of the tests and surgery related to the donation will be covered by the recipient. Your medical care and funeral costs are paid for by your family.

If I donate an organ after death, can I have an open-casket funeral?

Yes. The surgical incisions will all be closed.

Does signing a donor card affect the quality of medical care I get at a hospital?

No. When you are in a life-threatening situation, the medical team that is treating you is separate from the transplant team. A maximum effort to save your life will be made before an organ donation is considered.

Why become a donor?

The need is real.

! 110,586 people are waiting for an organ.

! 18 people will die each day waiting for an organ.

! 1 organ donaor can save up to 8 lives.
