In his goodness to all, God gives order and harmony to the world

Let us fix our gaze on the Father and Creator of the whole world, and let us hold on to his peace and blessings, his splendid and surpassing gifts. All Hallows Eve

Ready for the trick-or-treaters?

They will be out in droves this weekend parading around as ghoulies and ghosties to celebrate All Hallows Eve which comes slightly distorted to us as Halloween. This is a good opportunity for parents to teach their children of the religious origins of this ancient observance.

As is often the case the details of how the Feast of All Saints (All Hallows) came into the Church are lost in the clouds of history. Some associate it with the conversion of the Roman Pantheon which honored Pagan Gods into a Christian Church honoring martyrs in 610 a.d. Others trace its origins to Ireland from where it moved to England and the continent. In the 8th or 9th century it was extended to the whole Church and included all saints, not just the martyrs.

Traditionally feasts begin at sunset of the previous day, the vigil. That is why Mass on Saturday evening counts for Sunday. Thus the Feast of All Hallows began on the vigil, or eve of the day; hence,

Halloween. The date of November first may reflect the Irish custom of observing important events on the first of the month.

Now about the ghoulies and ghosties!

Here we have a conflation or mixing of the Feast of All Saints on November 1 and the Feast of All Souls on November 2. The feast dates back to the Cistercian monks at Cluny in the 10th century and reminds us to pray for those who are in Purgatory and need our prayers. Traditionally we call them the Church Suffering, as we refer to the saints as the Church Triumphant and those of us still alive as the Church Militant.

In the Middle Ages there was a popular belief that on All Souls Day the souls in Purgatory could appear on earth as will-o-the-wisps, witches, ghosts and all sorts of things to those people who had wronged them during their lifetimes. At some point, these customs slipped into the All Saints Celebration called

Halloween.

So this weekend when the little ghoulies and ghosties are out they remind us of the suffering souls in

Purgatory who need our prayers. We should all remember our beloved dead and pray for them regularly and for those who have no one to pray for them.

All Hallows Day

Next week we celebrate All Hallows Day. The term is not common in America, but it is more familiar to Irish and English Catholics as the name for the Feast of All Saints. The word “hallow” means holy, or more

specifically, making things holy as in the Lord’s Prayer,

“hallowed be thy name.”

All Saints or All Hallows on November 1st was established in the 8th century by Pope Gregory III to honor “the holy apostles and all saints, martyrs and confessors.” They were made “hallow” by the witness of their lives. They are honored or venerated because of the heroic lives they led.

All Saints is one of the twin observances in early November. The other is All Souls Day, in which the Church remembers and prays for the deceased, often referred to as the “poor souls,” who “have not yet been purified of the punishment for sin.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1475)

Folk observances have emerged in connection with both observances. Halloween (All Hallows Eve) is probably connected to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or summer’s end when pagans believed the dead returned. Thus we have the ghosts and

skeletons of Halloween.

Our Mexican heritage brings us the Dia de los Muertos on All Souls Day, a time when families gather together to remember and pray for relatives and friends who have died. People visit cemeteries and private altars are built and stories about dead relatives are told. Like Halloween, Día de los Muertos, probably has pagan roots in an ancient Aztec festival.

Early on, the Church learned to use pagan observances to catechize. The primary examples would be pagan observances that coincided with Christmas and Easter, which were transformed into Christian feasts.

The Feast of All Saints is a Holy Day of Obligation.

¿Estás listo para los que piden dulces?

Ellos estarán allá afuera en tropeles este fin de semana desfilando como espíritus y fantasmas para celebrar la Víspera de Todos los Santos (All Hallows Eve), la cual nos ha llegado ligeramente distorsionada con el nombre de Halloween. Esta es una gran oportunidad para los padres para enseñar a sus hijos acerca de los orígenes religiosos de esta práctica ancestral.

Como ocurre con frecuencia, los detalles de cómo esta Fiesta de Todos los Santos (All Hallows) llegó a la Iglesia están perdidos en las sombras de la historia. Algunos la asocian con la conversión del Panteón Romano -el cual honraba a los dioses Paganos– en una Iglesia Cristiana que honraba a los mártires, ocurrida en el año 610 d. c.

Otros rastrean sus orígenes hasta Irlanda desde donde se movió a Inglaterra y al continente europeo. En el siglo octavo o noveno estaba extendida por toda la Iglesia e incluía a todos los santos y no solamente a los mártires.

Tradicionalmente las fiestas iniciaban a la puesta del sol del día anterior, en la vigilia. Es por esto que la Misa del sábado por la noche cuenta para el domingo. De esta manera la Fiesta de Todos los Santos (Feast of All Hallows) iniciaba en la vigilia, o víspera del día; de ahí resulta el Halloween. La fecha de Noviembre primero puede reflejar la costumbre Irlandesa de observar eventos importantes en el primer día del mes.

¡Ahora hablemos de espíritus y fantasmas! Aquí tenemos una fusión o mezcla de la Fiesta de Todos los Santos (Feast of All Souls) del primero de Noviembre con la Fiesta de Todos los Difuntos (Feast of All Souls) del dos de Noviembre. La fiesta se remonta hasta los monjes Cistercenses de Cluny en el siglo décimo y nos recuerda que debemos orar por aquéllos que están en el

En algún momento, estas costumbres se introdujeron dentro de la Celebración de Todos los Santos (All Saints Celebration) con el nombre de Halloween. Así que en este fin de semana cuando los pequeños espíritus y fantasmas anden allá afuera, nos recordarán acerca de las almas sufrientes del Purgatorio que necesitan de nuestras oraciones.

Todos debemos de recordar a nuestros queridos difuntos y orar por ellos regularmente, y también por aquéllos que no tienen quien ore por ellos.

Día de Todos los Santos

La siguiente semana celebramos el Día de Todos los Santos (All Hallows Day). El término no es común en Norteamérica, pero es más familiar para los Católicos Irlandeses e Ingleses con el nombre de la Fiesta de Todos los Santos (the Feast of All Saints). La palabra

“hallow” significa santo, o más específicamente, hacer las cosas santas como se dice en la versión del Padrenuestro en Inglés, “hallowed be thy name”.

La celebración de Todos los Santos (o All Hallows) en el primero de noviembre fué establecida en el siglo octavo por el Papa Gregorio III para honrar a “los santos apóstoles y a todos los santos, mártires y confesores”.

Ellos llegaron a ser “santos” (hallowed) por el testimonio de sus vidas. Ellos son honrados o venerados debido a las vidas heroicas que ellos llevaron.

Todos los Santos (All Saints) es una de las dos

celebraciones del inicio de noviembre. La otra es el Día de Todos los Difuntos (All Souls Day), en la cual la Iglesia recuerda y ora por todos los difuntos,

comida el domingo 24 de octubre, 8:00 Am – 7:00 PM.

Gracias a nuestros feligreses muy generosos y algo de dinero de subvención que recibimos, nuestra despensa de alimentos está bien surtida con alimentos todos los días. Para las fiestas, necesitamos especialmente tarjetas de regalo de Walmart de $ 25, ya que le damos a cada familia una tarjeta tanto en Acción de Gracias como en Navidad, además de bolsas de comida.

comienzo de la vida hasta su fin, y en cada punto intermedio. Que nosotros, como San José, seamos milagros en la vida de los más necesitados, especialmente al principio y al final de la vida.

Alabamos a Dios porque, como su fiel protector, nunca has dudado en sacrificarte por los que te han sido confiados. Libro Memorial

La Iglesia tiene una larga tradición de recordar a nuestros fieles difuntos y encomendarlos al amor y la misericordia de Dios. Hacemos esto de una manera especial el 2 de noviembre, el Día de la Fiesta de Todas las Almas, y durante todo noviembre. Recordamos a aquellos que nos han precedido durante este Año de la Fe en el Libro Memorial. Por favor, escriba los nombres de sus seres queridos que han fallecido en este último año en el Libro ubicado en el vestíbulo de la iglesia.

También hay sobres en el vestíbulo para recordar a su querida familia y amigos en la Misa del Día de Todos los Santos, el 1 de noviembre.

No perdamos de vista al que es Padre y Creador de todo el mundo, y tengamos puesta nuestra esperanza en la munificencia y exuberancia del don de la paz que nos ofrece. Contemplémoslo con nuestra mente y pongamos los ojos de nuestra alma en la magnitud de sus designios, sopesando cuán bueno se muestra él para con todas sus criaturas. Los astros del firmamento obedecen en sus movimientos, con exactitud y orden, las reglas que de él han recibido; el día y la noche van haciendo su camino, tal como él lo ha determinado, sin que jamás un día irrumpa sobre otro. El sol, la luna y el coro de los astros siguen las órbitas que él les ha señalado en armonía y sin transgresión alguna. La tierra fecunda, sometiéndose a sus decretos, ofrece, según el orden de las estaciones, la subsistencia tanto a los hombres como a los animales y a todos los seres vivientes que la habitan, sin que jamás desobedezca el orden que Dios le ha fijado. Los abismos profundos e insondables y las regiones más inescrutables obedecen también a sus leyes. La inmensidad del mar, colocada en la concavidad donde Dios la puso, nunca traspasa los límites que le fueron impuestos, sino que en todo se atiene a lo que él le ha mandado. Pues al mar dijo el Señor:

Hasta aquí llegarás y no pasarás; aquí se romperá la arrogancia de tus olas. Los océanos, que el hombre no puede penetrar, y aquellos otros mundos que están por encima de nosotros obedecen también a las ordenaciones del Señor. Las diversas estaciones del año, primavera, verano, otoño e invierno, van sucediéndose en orden, una tras otra. El ímpetu de los vientos irrumpe en su propio momento y realiza así su finalidad sin desobedecer nunca; las fuentes, que nunca se olvidan de manar y que Dios creó para el bienestar y la salud de los hombres, hacen brotar siempre de sus pechos el agua necesaria para la vida de los hombres; y aún los más pequeños de los animales, uniéndose en paz y concordia, van reproduciéndose y multiplicando su prole.
