2021 SEASON-IN-REVIEW The men’s soccer program at Governors

State made significant strides in its second varsity season, compiling a 10-5-2 overall record, finishing third in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings (8-2-2), and advancing to the CCAC Tour- nament Championship Game.

Due to COVID-19, the team’s fall schedule was shifted to the spring and shortened and fans were not allowed inside the Sportsplex in Crown Point, Indiana. Fac- ing many challenges, the Jaguars posted their best season to date and continued their meteoric rise in the CCAC.

It was a less than auspicious start to the season when GSU hosted Indiana Tech the morning of February 19 at the Sparta Dome in Crown Point. Losing 5-0 to a team that advanced to the NAIA Tourna- ment, GSU followed with a road loss at Missouri Baptist. It was at that point that Matt Eggert’s squad turned the season around, going unbeaten (7-0-2) in its first nine conference matches to earn 23 of a possible 27 points.

“One of our goals was to play top-level competition,” said Eggert. “We had strong character in our group and had the talent and determination to adjust and get ready for one of the toughest conferences in the nation.”

GSU made a statement in its CCAC opener, thumping Olivet Nazarene 5-0 outdoors at the Sportsplex. Efrain Davila scored the first goal at GSU’s new home with a rocket from 35 yards out. GSU compiled a 6-1-0 record on the Sportsplex turf fields, outscoring opponents 14-1 before dropping a 4-1 decision to Cardinal Stritch in the regular season home finale.

GSU’s winning streak was highlighted by a 3-0 triumph of Judson, which saw the Jaguars played a man down for 27 min- utes, and a 2-0 victory versus Roosevelt, a top-flight team in the CCAC.

During its unbeaten streak, GSU won a series of close games on the road, pro-

ducing two wins and two ties. No victory was bigger than a 3-2 double overtime decision at Lincoln. The Jaguars went up 2-0, then surrendered two goals in seven minutes before regrouping to win in extra frames. Andy Latorre provided the game-winning goal proving his worth as CCAC Freshman of the Year. The attack- ing midfielder from Lima, Peru led GSU in scoring with 18 points and set a team record with eight assists. Latorre made a splash in his Jaguar debut on March 2, scoring just 16 minutes into the game.

Joining Latorre on the All-CCAC First Team was fellow Peruvian Luis Ramirez, recognized as the top goalkeeper in the conference. A starter in 16 games, Ramirez set team marks for goals-against average (1.38), save percentage (.785), saves (84), shutouts (6) and wins (9). Twice he was named CCAC Defensive Player of the Week and became the first GSU athlete to garner national player of the week honors from the NAIA. Ramirez turned in his best performance in the CCAC Champi- onship, making 13 saves.

Despite a three-game winless streak to end the regular season (excluding a forfeit win), GSU recovered to make a strong run in the CCAC Tournament. The Jaguars disposed of St. Francis, 2-1, at home before pulling out a 1-0 win at Lincoln on Juan Manuel Rodriguez’s game-win- ning goal scored with four seconds left in regulation. The two victories at Lincoln cemented a budding rivalry with the CCAC’s newest member.

Rodriguez was one of eight international players brought in by Eggert and his staff who factored into the team’s success.

An active force in the middle, Rodriguez averaged 92 minutes a contest covering ground from box-to-box. Another contrib- utor at midfield was senior Hamzat Sanni, who paced GSU with six goals, going a perfect 5-for-5 on penalties—a team record not likely to be broken anytime soon. Sanni was one of seven Jaguars to earn CCAC All-Academic Team honors

and earned All-CCAC Second Team recognition along with defender Dawson Swearengen and forward Dylan Swearen- gen.

The Swearengen brothers led by example on both sides of the pitch. Dawson logged the most minutes for the second-straight year, spear-heading a defense that pro- duced seven shutouts as the third-hardest team to score against (1.35 goals allowed per game) in the CCAC. Dylan finished second in team goals and points, netting GSU’s lone goal in the CCAC Champion- ship.

Another Jaguar with a high motor was Argentine Agustin Vivas, who set school records for total shots (53) and shots on goal (25). GSU’s offense also received a boost from Barcelona native Marc Fernandez, a transfer from Division II Lenoir-Rhyne and starter in nine contests.

Forward Hussein Ninalowo provided a feel good moment to the season with his first career goal. The 6-foot-6 Nigerian battled through injuries to become a con- tributor off the bench.

Eggert cited several reasons for the team’s success in 2021. “We had a fantastic group of returning players who grew and the international players brought a level of experience and intensity. We were able to be disruptive from a defensive standpoint and always be dangerous offensively.

The contributions of our returning guys cannot be understated. Hamzat moved around in different positions and was our man of the match in the championship game. Dawson has established himself as one of the top center backs in the region and the tireless effort of his brother Dylan, who not matter where we ask him to play, is always a problem for the other team. I think everybody found a way to contrib- ute, which made it a special team.”

2019 SEASON-IN-REVIEW The Governors State men’s soccer team

turned in the most successful expansion season in GSU’s athletic history in 2019.

Coach Matt Eggert’s squad posted an 8-9-1 record and qualified for the Chi- cagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament (with a 4-7-1 mark), losing to Cardinal Stritch in the quarterfinals.

The Jaguars won their first three games by a combined score of 13-2, including a 6-0 win over IU Northwest in the inaugural game. On a warm August night, Dylan Swearengen scored the team’s historic first goal on a penalty kick (just 12:10 into the game) and added a second goal 1:46 later. One game into his career Swearen- gen was named CCAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Scoring was not a problem for the Orange and Black, who averaged 1.7 goals per game to rank eighth in that category out of 14 CCAC schools. Junior Senega- lese striker Papa Thiam, named to the All-CCAC Second Team, finished with a team-high 11 goals and 22 points in 18 contests while sophomore Ukrainian forward Zakhar Shkidchenko struck for eight goals and 18 points in 15 games.

Both players generated four-goal scoring streaks and provided two of the most memorable goals of the season. Shkid- chenko scored the game-winner in double overtime at St. Ambrose and Thiam netted the game-winner with 1:03 left in the sec- ond overtime against Trinity Christian.

“Both have only scratched the surface of what they can do,” said Eggert. “They can truly be elite attackers at this level by the time they leave GSU.”

Season highlights included a 4-2 win at Taylor, which saw the Jaguars score twice in the opening 3:21 to quiet a raucous crowd on the road. GSU also won its first-ever home game, played at Marian Catholic High School, with a 4-2 win over Holy Cross. Governors State’s best stretch of play occurred from October 9-22 when the team compiled a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1).

“I’m very proud that as a first-year program we were competitive in a tough conference, made the playoffs, and estab- lished a style of play where we were dan- gerous to score at anytime,” said Eggert.

GSU’s luck took a turn for the worse when starting goalkeeper Saahil Kapoor injured his hand with two weeks left in the season. Kapoor recorded three shut- outs and was named CCAC Defensive Player of the Week before giving way to Sergio Mendieta, who earlier in the season registered a clean sheet in his GSU debut.

Much of the Jaguars’ success could be traced to veteran players whose names did not always appear in the box scores.

Central midfielder Hamzat Sanni served as a conduit for GSU’s offensive attack while center back Graciano Santos, who played at Purdue Northwest, served as a coach on the field. Co-captain Dawson Swearengen played a team-high 1,555 minutes and was named team MVP. Other unsung performers included co-captain Edson Gonzalez (15 starts) along with midfielder Osvaldo Sanchez (16 starts).

Their contributions were invaluable as Eggert integrated 24 new players into a cohesive unit.

“As we transition into our second year as a program, it’s all about taking the next step, putting in the hard work to form connections as a team and develop to the point where we’re just not making the playoffs, but where we establish ourselves as a championship-caliber team. We’re going to accept nothing less,” said Eggert.
