We arrived on this island three days ago. It was a lovely trip, and we spent the eight-hour voyage sitting on the deck playing cards and sunbathing. There was just one big problem. There was only a bar on the boat, with crisps and chocolate, and by the time we arrived and got to our hotel, it was already late evening and we were hungry and exhausted. By that time, all the restaurants in the village were closed.
That turned out to be the least of our problems. The hotel we were staying in was fi ne, but the weather was awful. In fact, the rain started the moment we reached the island and we have only had a couple of hours of sunshine.
Luckily I insisted on putting
an umbrella in my case, much to Janet’s amusement. ‘What do we need that for?’ she said. ‘We’re going to a Mediterranean island, not to Manchester.
Are you going to use it to keep the sun off?’
Now I keep reminding her of this conversation every time we walk shivering and dripping along the road to the beach.
Of course, we know now what we did wrong. Apparently it always rains a lot here at this time of the year, and is often quite cold. The boy at the taverna explained this to us last night. ‘That’s why there are no tourists here now,’ he said.
‘It’s hot in June, not in March.’
Of course, I blame it all on Janet’s brother, Tim. He gave us the idea of coming here for a holiday.
‘Somewhere different for a change’, he said. ‘Instead of your usual two weeks in Scotland in the rain.’
I’m halfway through writing him a postcard and I’ve got as far as ‘Having a lovely time. Wish you were here.’ I can’t think of anything else to say, and in any case my hand is too cold to write.
An unfortunate holiday
