C E O R E P O R T – A D A M R O B E R T S O N

It has certainly been a challenging 12 months for Surfing Victoria, with COVID-19 having a major impact on our ability to deliver most of our event calendar and programs for a good portion of the year.

Our most notable event cancellations were the 59th Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, as well as the Australian SUP Titles, Australian Indigenous Titles and WSL Philliip Island Pro QS1000. We look forward to delivering our marquee events in what we are hoping is a more normal 2021.

As a result of COVID-19, it was very difficult to run State Rounds across multiple disciplines, leaving many 2020 Victorian Titles undecided. The Woolworths Victorian Junior Shortboard Titles ran 2 of the scheduled 3 events in the Series, allowing us to award State Titles to Charlie Farrer (U/18 Boys), Lucy Naylor (U/18 Girls), Willis Droomer (U/16 Boys), Mia Huppatz (U/16 Girls), Jay Phipps (U/14 Boys) with Sara Hickson and Isla Huppatz tied for the U/14 Girls. Congratulations to all champions.

The inability to deliver face to face course led us to pivot to the launch of the Surfers Rescue 24/7 course online. This online program gives participants the ability to participate in the the SR24/7 program at home, including the identification of the signs of downing, step by step CPR, understanding of the many dangers on land and in the water, and performing a virtual reality board

rescue.https://www.surfersrescue.training

We were proud to announce a partnership with URBNSURF in late 2019, providing Surfing Victoria the opportunity to host the first wave pool event on Australian soil at the URBNSURF facility at

Tullamarine in Melbourne. Broadcast Live to over 50,000 viewers, the action day of surfing featured Victoria’s best Shortboard, Bodyboard and Longboard athletes. Tully Wylie and India Robinson took top honours under lights in the Open Shortboard divisions, Ben Considine and Angie King claimed the Longboard divisions with Guy Drerup and Melissa Fitzwilliam topping the Bodyboard field.

The launch ofwww.SurfBetterNow.comwas an incredible achievement from our staff. This platform is available to all surfers with an interest in improving their surfing, with detailed resources available for beginners starting out, right through to elite athletes on the World Championship Tour. Furthermore, we were able to reach agreements with our our Partner States; NSW, WA, QLD and SA taking Surf Better Now to surfers Australia wide.

2020 has challenged Surfing Victoria like no other year, as CEO I am incredibly proud of our staff and very appreciative for the support and understanding shown from our members and affiliated clubs and Surf Schools. I’d also like to thank the Victorian Government, VicHealth, Emergency Management Victoria, Play it Safe by the Water and all our other partners for their continued support of Victorian surfing.

We look forward to bringing a full calendar of opportunities to our members into 2021.

C H A I R R E P O R T – A S H L E I G H W A L L

The start of 2020 was extraordinarily tough for Victoria. The impact of the bushfires and the Covid-19 pandemic have been confronting and challenging but also showed the unique role surfing plays in uniting communities in the face of hardship and uncertainty. Despite the challenges and cancellation of many of our key events and programs at the beginning of 2020, the 2019-2020 financial year saw some great achievements for Surfing Victoria both in and out of the water. I would like to express my appreciation to everyone who has come together to offer their collaboration, support and advice to Surfing Victoria through this challenging time.

Surfing Victoria continues to be overseen by a strong volunteer board who spent countless additional hours in 2020 as we dealt with the impact of the pandemic. The Board has continued to focus on ensuring Surfing Victoria has a clear strategy to build a diverse and inclusive surfing community. We are committed to the idea that no matter where you live in Victoria you should have the same opportunity to participate in and enjoy the benefits of Surfing Victoria’s programs and events.

We have seen that surfers continue to play a vital role in performing rescues along our coastline as they are at the beach from dawn to dusk 365 days a year. Surfing Victoria, with support from the Victorian Government, is successfully delivering the Surfers Rescue 24/7 program which is a free Board Rescue and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course for all surfers and recreational water users in Victoria. Our team was able to successfully shift this program to an online environment in response to the pandemic. This hallmark program will focus on working with boardrider’s clubs and school students in the coming year.

We formed an advisory group to gather insights and experiences from a diverse range of stakeholders and individuals to develop a strategy that guides Surfing Victoria to foster gender equality in surfing.

Surfing Victoria will deliver on the strategy in 2021 including through the creation of the Surf Her Way brand and community to inspire women and girls to get involved in surfing, expanding the existing Coasting SUP program to include Surfing with the support of VicHealth, delivering women and girls specific coaching sessions for recreational surfers and developing a framework for Boardrider’s Clubs and Surf and SUP schools to be leaders in equality through surfing.

The Victorian Indigenous Surfing Program remains another key initiative and in its 23rd year, is one of the longest running Indigenous engagement programs in the country. Strong Aboriginal community leadership and engagement in culturally safe and engaging environments that are inclusive, respectful and flexible are the core values of the program and we are committed to ensuring it continues to thrive. As we look forward to the year ahead, we will continue to focus on participation and retention, building a successful state-wide performance program and coaching network with offering to surfers of all levels and disciplines, and delivering sustainability and stability in our operations and financial performance so that we can continue to improve our impact as an organisation each year.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Surfing Victoria staff and volunteers for their commitment and resilience throughout the challenges of 2020. We also thank the Victorian Government and all of our partners for their continued support of surfing in Victoria.

Amendment to the Surfing Victoria Constitution

The Constitution of Surfing Victoria does not allow for meetings of Members to be help using audio visual technology such as Zoom. Surfing Victoria was therefore required to apply to Consumer Affairs Victoria to hold the 2020 Annual General Meeting out of time due to the restrictions imposed the Victorian Government in response to COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the AGM which is ordinarily held by December each year is being held in March.

To ensure that Surfing Victoria can hold meetings of Members using technology in the future, it is proposed that the Members approve that the Constitution be amended to allow meetings of Members to be held using technology as follows:

“The Members of Surfing Victoria Incorporated approve the following amendment to the Constitution by way of a Special Resolution.

Clause 9.6 be deleted and replaced with the following clause:

9.6. Use of technology

9.6.1 A Member not physically present at a General Meeting may be permitted to participate in the General Meeting by the use of technology that allows that Member, and the Members present at the General Meeting to clearly and simultaneously communicate with each other.

9.6.2 For the purposes of this clause, a Member participating in a General Meeting as permitted under clause 9.6.1 is taken to be present at the General Meeting and, if the Member votes at the General Meeting, is taken to have voted in person.”
