attractions and occasions that are fun and festive.

Throughout the year, the region sways to the

rhythm of major festivals and events that are of

international interest or out of the ordinary. For the

organisers of these attractions, it is a privilege to

be able to offer visitors choice programmes put

together professionally, but also with a good

mea-sure of spontaneity.

The main railway routes of Europe converge in the heart of the Lake Geneva Region. The TGV Lyria links Paris with Lausanne, and the TGV South-East Montpellier and Marseilles with Geneva. The Pau Casals travels from Barcelona to Lausanne, and the Cisalpino from Milan, Venice , Florence or Rome to Lausanne. From Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt you can travel to Basel by the ICE.

Echallens

Lake Geneva Region

After its popular success in 1978 and 1998, the Wheat and Bread Festival will be held for the third time in 2008!

This great open-air festival for the eyes and for the ears revolves around three themes: dreams, fantasy and sharing.

A musical extravaganza made up of 16 scenes where objects become symbols which become figures in turn. A white lady represents the Earth, a magician the sun, a sorcerer with scissors sends out evil waves, and a grain of wheat goes through a great many incidents throughout the show.

7 to 29 June

Switzerland and Austria are coordinating the upcoming UEFA European Football championship. Thirty-one matches will be played in 23 days. The UEFA EURO 2008™ matches will be held in eight cities. In Switzerland: Geneva, Berne, Basle and Zurich; in Austria: Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt and Vienna. The opening match will take place in Basle at 6 p.m. on 7 June. The final will be held in Vienna on 29 June.

Come and support the Swiss team!

3 matches will be held at the Geneva stadium: on 7, 11, and 15 June.

There will be live broadcasts on giant screens in several cities in the Lake Geneva Region (Nyon, Lausanne and Vevey)!

An immense group will be formed for this show: 600 singers make up the adult choir. There will be 500 extras, 50 musicians in the wind band and 15 in the brass band, accompanied by soloists.

Oz’Arènes Festival Rock

August is the month when the stone was used to build the magnificent Roman amphitheatre in Avenches rocks. The occasion is the 17th Oz’Arènes Rock Festival, the smallest of the big festivals and growing in popularity. The atmosphere of the location combined with the electrifying programme of wild rock, deep blues, brilliant pop, cosmic electro and rhythmic reggae, is guaranteed to attract a public won over from the beginning.

Béjart Ballet Lausanne

Maurice Béjart is the founder of the “Ballet du XXe siècle”, the “Béjart Ballet of Lausanne” and the Rudra School of Dance. Béjart settled in Lausanne, the capital of the Lake Geneva Region, in 1987. Over the years, his company of 38 dancers has proven regularly, both in its Lausanne studios and in the world’s leading theatres, such as the Paris Opera, the Teatro Colon and the Bolshoi, that his ballets, which constantly explore new ground, can arouse the interest of a wide public. It’s in Lausanne, his adopted home, where he annually presents two series of performances in spring and winter.

Mediaeval festival at the Castle of Grandson

This two-day mediaeval festival features a variety of events in the Castle of Grandson, the former seat of the bailiffs of Berne and Fribourg. Every year from mid-June to end-September, the city of Lausanne organises cultural events and festivals. Festival de la Cité

The 36th edition of the Festival de la Cité will offer more than 200 open-air shows free of charge in the old city of Lausanne over a period of eight days. Each year more than 120,000 spectators come to enjoy a wide range of concerts and shows including modern music, theatre, dance, cinema, sidewalk art, humour, jazz, classical music, singing and readings. This unique summer event, with its creations, discoveries, encounters, artists from around the world and festive atmosphere in the magical surroundings of the old city shouldn’t be missed.

Athletissima 2008

Lausanne Marathon 2008

More than 10,000 competitors from 30 countries take part each year in this race between Lausanne and La Tour-de-Peilz. Started in 1993, the event proposes six different categories: the marathon, the half marathon, the quarter marathon, the mini-marathon (1/10 = 4.2195 km) for young runners between 7 and 16 years of age, the half marathon for wheelchair competitors and hand cyclists as well as the quarter marathon for walkers and Nordic walkers. Nearly 80,000 spectators are expected to cheer the competitors along the way between the Lavaux vineyards and Lake Geneva.

The Cully Jazz Festival rivals the biggest festivals in Switzerland. The event takes you on a nine-day cruise through the world of jazz letting you tune in to various musical trends which have come together on the shores of Lake Geneva. Catch the gigs, colour and atmosphere in the big tent or for more alternative listening, head for the Next Step for creations, acoustic concerts and DJs. There are 60 free concerts in the cellar scenes of Cully and in the bistros of the town.

Vevey folk markets

Every Saturday, the main square in Vevey becomes the site for a magnificent summer market with colourful, lively stands where craftsmen concentrate on their creations; with groups of folk singers and musicians adding to the welcoming and festive atmosphere and with local growers dressed in traditional costumes showing eager customers the products of their efforts on the land.

Sidewalk Artist Festival

For two days, the streets of the old city of Vevey are taken over by jugglers, mimes, acrobats, dancers, humorists and puppeteers participating in a lively carnival of more than 100 small shows. As with the previous festival, this 16th event includes artists from around the world who will be on hand to amuse or move young and old alike. They will also be vying for the famous “Paving Stone” which is awarded to the best performances.

The Images Festival has turned Vevey into a city of creation and visual communication, characterised by two Grand Prix, one for photography and one for the cinema. Innovation this year: «Images in air» will make Vevey even livelier. Through large-dimension photographs, moving image projections and posters, the festival clearly positions itself within a new exhibition generation. Using the streets and passage ways, Images'08 will temporarily transform the city into an open-air museum.

Hot-Air Ballooning Week

On the occasion of the 30th International Ballooning Festival more than 80 hot-air balloons from 18 countries meet at Château d’Oex. Each day dirigibles and hot-air balloons of all shapes and sizes will provide a colourful spectacle. Wednesday afternoon is reserved exclusively for children’s activities with captive balloon flights, face-painting, various shows, a mass release of balloon and various other activities. Passenger flights will be organized throughout the week. The “Sound and Light” show is scheduled for Friday, 19 January at 7 p.m., followed by festivities in the village.

“Le Bois qui chante”

violin festival

Hikers’ Night

Hiking fans, big and small, young and young at heart, can take part in this guided moonlight tour with frequent stops and activities in the serene surroundings of the mountains. A major festival with games and dances, this carnival celebration on Friday has a torchlight procession, a mask competition, a “Miss Brandons” contest, activities in the city and disco until the wee, small hours. On Saturday there’s a children’s procession, and in the evening the main procession of “Guggen-musik” groups followed by all-night activities in the city. For Sunday organisers have scheduled a “Guggenmusik” concert and a big carnival procession.

The annual “Wysam 333” cycle race is an important event on the calendar for cycling enthusiasts. The 333 km long event gets under way at night and follows a route over the hills and past the lakes of the north of French-speaking Switzerland. Normally participants try to cover the route in one stage but now it’s possible to do it in two stages.
