Following a career as a research scientist where he spent a number of years ‘playing’ with lasers to measure atmospheric pollution and investigate climate change, he is now to be found in a school science laboratory where his passion for making physics fun and understandable but at the same time academically challenging is indulged. In this masterclass we’ll use role‐play, intriguing contemporary sources and good historical enquiry skills to compare the wide‐ranging impacts of three major epidemics ‐ The Black Death that swept through 14th Century Europe killing a third of the population; the Great Plague of London (1665‐6) and the Cholera outbreak that hit 19th Century Britain at the height of its imperial power. Sacha enjoys developing and leading challenging, exciting and entertaining masterclasses for young historians. Richard Kerridge has been a masterclass presenter for four years and in that time still hasn't worked out who Jack the Ripper was, whether King Arthur really existed, if the Black Death was a good thing for 14th century peasants or whether the Vikings really were vicious. He could really do with your help solving these and future historical problems. If any of these appeal to you then RATS is the perfect course for you! You will learn how to organise your thinking and how to debate and express your views. You will practise building an argument; spot common argument flaws and create counter‐arguments to defend your position. You will learn how to judge the reliability of evidence and the basics of how to build legal cases. Based on the core material of the OCR GCSE programme ‐ Reasoning And Thinking Skills are the building blocks for higher academic achievement. Cambridge and Oxford Universities recognise this and have introduced a Reasoning and Thinking Skills test as part of their entrance criteria.
