1. SCOPE
The objective of this calculation report is to establish the method to be used for the sizing of the Low Voltage
power cables for the Low Voltage power distribution system and motors at Container Terminal-1 Utility
Buildings and Infrastructure of New Doha Port Project.
2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
The following documents have been taken into account for the cable sizing calculation:
• Specification Section 21: Electrical Works
:
9224-05-EL-SPC-7001
• Regulation for Installation of Electrical
Wiring, Electrical Equipment and Air
Conditioning Equipment-Dec 2010
:
QGEWC / KAHRAMAA
• IEC Electrical Installation of Buildings
:
IEC-60364-5-52-2001
Selection and erection of Electrical
Equipment – Wiring Systems
• “DOHA CABLES” Catalogue for XLPE Insulated
Low Voltage Cables.
3. INITIAL DATA AND ASSUMPTIONS
The power cables have been sized taking into consideration the following data and cable type:
• Nominal voltage system: 240 / 415V
• Cable insulation level BS(IEC) kV: 0.6/1 kV (0.6/1 kV)
• Conductor material: Cu (Copper)
• Insulation material: XLPE
o
Maximum conductor operating temperature: 90ºC
o
Maximum short circuit temperature: 250ºC
• Thermal Resistivity values for direct buried cable installations: 2.0°C. m/W
(KM standards section 3.3.12.1 and Specification Section 21: Electrical Works)
• Design conditions for electrical cables:
o
Underground cable (buried)
40°C
o
In air
50°C
The LV cables for power distribution system and the loads shall be as follows:
• Cable shall comprise of plain copper, stranded circular conductors insulated with an adequate
thickness of extruded cross linked polyethylene (XLPE).
• Up to 10 Sqmm Cu/XPLE/PVC, unarmoured cable for indoor installations.
• 16 Sqmm and above Cu/XLPE/SWA/PVC for armoured multicore cable for both indoor and outdoor
installations.
• Cu/XLPE/SWA/LSHF armoured cable for the power supply to D & B (Manned) Buildings from the
Utility Buildings.
• Armoured multicore cable shall have steel wire armouring and extruded sheath of black PVC.
• Armoured single core cable shall have aluminium wire armouring and extruded sheath of black PVC.
The cable sizing will be performed considering multi-core cables up to 240 mm
2for distribution cables. For
power, lighting and control cables the minimum cross section shall be 2.5 mm
2. Maximum cross section for
single-core cables shall be 630mm
2. Single core cables may be used for practical and/or economic reasons,
e.g., transformer secondary cables or in case of high current ratings where two parallel multicore cables of
the largest cross section permitted would not suffice. All three single core cables shall be laid in trefoil
formation.
Sizing of motor feeders and power feeders will be performed taken into account the Full Load Ampacity
(FLA) of the equipment (100% loaded). The system voltage is assumed to be at 100% nominal voltage.
Standard power factors and efficiencies at 90% load will be used in this calculation, in case of absence of
precise data.
All LV Cables shall be installed in ducts throughout the Container Terminal-1 Area. The uPVC ducts are
provided with the concrete encasement for LV Cables at road crossings only. The LV Cables shall be laid at
a depth of 600mm as minimum.
In the Container Terminal-1 Area, all the ducts shall be installed with minimum ground cover of 900mm
otherwise it shall be concrete encased.
All LV cables in Buildings shall be installed on cable trays/ Trunking/ Conduits as per Specification section
21: Electrical Works Doc. No.: 9224-05-EL-SPC-7001 clause 9.3.3.
The correction factors / de-rating factors for the cables installed in Ducts and in Air are taken from “DOHA
CABLES” Catalogue.
4. CABLE SIZING CRITERIA
Sizing of LV cables will be based on the compliance of all of the following criteria:
• Voltage Drop
• Continuous Current Carrying Capacity (Ampacity)
• Thermal Short Circuit Capacity
4.1. VOLTAGE DROP
A feeder shall be sized in such a way that the maximum voltage drop over the cable ensures the proper
operation of the associated equipment in normal service. Excessive voltage drop will result in unsatisfactory
operation of electrical equipment, and represents energy wasted in the cabling system. Voltage drop can
also cause damage to electrical Equipment.
The following formula will determine the voltage drop:
• For feeders and motors under running conditions (three phases and single phase):
• For motors under starting conditions (three phases and single phase):

4.2. AMPACITY
The current carrying capacity of a cable corresponds to the maximum current that it can carry under
specified conditions without the conductor exceeding the permissible limit of steady state temperature for the
type of insulation concerned. De-rating or correction factors are applied where the installation conditions
differ from those for which values of current carrying capacity are defined. The following de-rating factors will
be applied depending on the type of installation.

5. CABLE SIZING REQUIREMENTS
5.1. VOLTAGE DROP
As per BS 7671: 4%
As per QGEWC: 2.5% (From utility LV Connection Point)
The maximum permissible voltage drop for three phase 415V system shall be 4%.
The Voltage drop is measured from the LV terminal of the Transformer to the final load in a LV Circuit.
5.2. AMPACITY
Cable size will be selected in order to comply with ampacity criterion. The allowable cable ampacities for this
project are determined following the application of the appropriate correction/de-rating factors which are
applied where the installation and environmental conditions differ from those for which the values of current
carrying capacity are defined.
The following factors (de-rating and over-sizing factors) will be used in the calculation depending on the type
of installation:
6. De-rating factors for cables.
Ampacities data were taken from “DOHA CABLES” Catalogue (Appendix 1). The data is based upon normal
conditions which are:
• Ground temperature:
35ºC
• Ambient Air temperature:
40ºC
• Depth of laying:
0.5m
• Soil Thermal resistivity:
1.2 K·m/W
In order to update them to the project conditions the following correction factors from “DOHA CABLES”
Catalogue will be used:

The design factor of 25% will be employed to oversize incoming cables to LV switchgears to allow 25%
spare capacity for the future loads on all the incoming cables.
6.3. THERMAL SHORT CIRCUIT CAPACITY
For incomer cables to all the switchgears the short circuit rating of the switchgear shall be used for the value
of short circuit current. The value for t has been taken as 1 sec for incomer circuit breakers.
According to the equation under paragraph 4.3 and taking into account the above clearance times, the
minimum conductor sizes shall be calculated.
The minimum calculated Short Circuit Ratings of conductor from “DOHA CABLES” manufacturer are
provided in the Appendix-11:
For switchgear outgoings (feeders and motor starters) the current limiting characteristic of the circuit breaker
has been taken into account in order to size the minimum cable sizes. For that purpose, let-through energy
curves of circuit breakers to be installed in the switchgear have been analysed.
