Degree Offerings. The school shall offer instructional programs reflecting its

stated mission and goals, leading to the Master of Public Health (MPH) or

equivalent professional master’s degree in at least the five areas of knowledge

basic to public health. The school may offer other degrees, professional and

academic, and other areas of specialization, if consistent with its mission and

resources.

The areas of knowledge basic to public health include the following:

Biostatistics – collection, storage, retrieval, analysis and interpretation of health data;

design and analysis of health-related surveys and experiments; and concepts and practice of

statistical data analysis;

Epidemiology – distributions and determinants of disease, disabilities and death in human

populations; the characteristics and dynamics of human populations; and the natural

history of disease and the biologic basis of health;

Environmental health sciences – environmental factors including biological, physical and

chemical factors that affect the health of a community;

Health services administration – planning, organization, administration, management,

evaluation and policy analysis of health and public health programs; and

Social and behavioral sciences – concepts and methods of social and behavioral

sciences relevant to the identification and solution of public health problems.

a. An instructional matrix presenting all of the school’s degree programs and areas of

specialization. If multiple areas of specialization are available within departments or

academic units shown on the matrix, these should be included. The matrix should

distinguish between public health professional degrees, other professional degrees

and academic degrees at the graduate level, and should distinguish baccalaureate

public health degrees from other baccalaureate degrees. The matrix must identify

any programs that are offered in distance learning or other formats. Non-degree

programs, such as certificates or continuing education, should not be included in

the matrix.

The School of Public Health-Bloomington offers five different undergraduate degrees with a

total of nineteen different majors, four different masters degrees with a total of twenty-five

different majors, and five different PhD majors.

Table 2.1.1, the instructional matrix, is provided at the end of this section of the self-study.

b. The school bulletin or other official publication, which describes all degree programs

identified in the instructional matrix, including a list of required courses and their

course descriptions. The school bulletin or other official publication may be online,

with appropriate links noted.

The 2014-2015 School of Public Health-Bloomington Academic Bulletin is provided as Electronic

Resource 2.1.a.

c. Assessment of the extent to which this criterion is met and an analysis of the

school’s strengths, weaknesses and plans relating to this criterion.

This criterion is met.

Strengths

The school offers a diverse array of academic programs that collectively represent a

progressive and multidisciplinary approach to addressing the public health challenges of today

and tomorrow. The school offers public health designated programs at the bachelors, masters,

and doctoral level, including one major under the BSPH degree, eight concentrations under the

MPH degree, and three public health doctoral programs.

The school’s academic portfolio also includes academic programs designated as “other” at the

bachelors, masters, and doctoral level. While not traditionally considered public health, these

academic programs provide students with innovative preparation through both the disciplinary

traditions of their curricula and the infusion of knowledge basic to public health into each. As a

result, these programs are highly complementary to the public health designated programs and

collectively, represent significant efforts to train future generations of professionals who will work

toward attaining the goals of public health in interdisciplinary and creative ways.

Weaknesses

None documented.

Future Plans

The school continues to explore opportunities to expand its public health designated programs.

Currently, efforts are underway to add additional undergraduate majors to our BSPH degree,

including those in epidemiology and biostatistics, environmental health, and physical activity.

Additionally, faculty are currently engaged in the development of proposals for new

concentrations under the MPH degree and online degree programs that are tailored to

mid-career public health professionals at both the masters and doctoral levels.
