2021 CONTEST TIMELINE

2021 CONTEST TIMELINE

1. Follow contest guidelines and rules

3. Judges will view the emailed photos of student artwork and artist statements and select 25 pieces from both the Junior and Senior Divisions that meet contest guidelines and rules. Only the 25 pieces of artwork chosen by the judges (from each category) will be displayed at the Virginia Holocaust Museum.

4. If student artwork is chosen as one of the 50 pieces to be on display at the Museum, it is the responsibility of the student or teacher to mail or drop off the artwork at the Virginia Holocaust Museum by Friday, March 19, 2021Friday, March 19, 2021. To ensure impartial judging, please put your name on the BACK of your artwork (do not put your name or any other identifying information on the front of your artwork).

5. Judges will award a first, second, third place, and honorable mention in both the Junior and Senior Divisions. 6. Students and sponsoring teachers will be notified by email at the end of March as to the results of the competition. 7. All artwork will be on display from March 26, 2021 through June 1, 2021. From June 1 through June 30 it is the

responsibility of the student or teacher to pick up artwork. The Museum is not responsible for return postage or shipping artwork.

8. Awards will be presented during the Museum’s Yom HaShoah program in April. Winning artwork will be displayed in the Museum lobby until June 2022.

1. 2-D entries should be no larger than 24” x 24” in size, though reasonable exceptions shall be accepted. 2. 3-D entries must be sized to sit on a small pedestal. 3. Entries must be matted and mounted on a firm support

such as foam core, wood, or frame, making sure that the piece is rigid, or be framed. A hanging method must be a consideration for all 2-D entries, as pieces will hang from the left and right sides near the top. Charcoal, pencil or pastels that are submitted need to be sprayed with a fixative to prevent transfer and smudges. For framed works, eye hooks should be securely anchored at the top, left and right corners.

4. The entry must be original and created solely for this competition. Please remember to cite all references and resources if the student is using images from a website. Student artwork will be displayed at the Museum and viewed by Museum visitors. The Museum is not a political forum. No group entries.

5. Scan one copy of the information form provided and email it to [email protected]. Include all of the following:

• tudent name, e-mail address, home phone number, and address

• Student’s grade, teacher’s name, and school • Teacher’s contact e-mail and phone number. • The materials used (i.e., pastels, oils, pencils, etc.). • A title for the artwork.

• A brief artist’s statement about the piece, describing how you have incorporated the theme and the topic(s) you chose to address in your work. The artist statement must be typed and must be 50 words or less.

• The student must sign the permission form for their artwork to be considered for the contest.

6. Judging will be based on interpretation of the topic, how well your image communicates the idea you selected, creativity and craftsmanship.
