Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

June 27, 2021

Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Today’s readings assert God’s power over death. The author or Wisdom states that God created all things that they might have life. Paul teachers the Corinthi-ans that just as Jesus graciously sacrificed his divinity, and in fact his life, so that we may share in his richness, in eternal life, we are called to sacrifice our abundance. Jesus brought life to two people, healing a woman of a lengthy ill-ness and raising a girl from the dead. Listening to today’s read-ings, let us imagine how we can give life to those living in the shadow of death.

May God Bless Our Fathers

Last weekend we honored and remembered our fathers. This year we also thank them for all they did to get their families through this difficult period and their work in many occupations that where challenging and essential. This last year, family life was constantly disrupted and so many activities had to be completed at home. Our fathers were constantly trying to see that their families were taken care of while completing their work in challenging situations. Many fathers were also on the front lines in health care, teaching, retail, farming, etc. to enable our country to keep functioning. Our fathers deserve a big THANK YOU and our appreciation for their important role in our parish and families.

May St. Joseph watch over and protect our fathers.

A Note of Gratitude to Fr. Benjamin

We were privileged last weekend to have Fr. Benjamin from the Oblates of the Virgin Mary here at our Masses and to give us a snapshot of the Catholic Church in Nigeria. It is sad and horrifying to know that a whole seminary for young men had to move to try to find a safe place for them to purse their education and formation for the Catholic priest-hood.

Fr. Benjamin shared some stories of his own family with me that gave me a better sense of the danger that Catholic families face in Nigeria. His younger sister was kidnapped two years ago and only released after the family paid a large ransom. She suffered greatly through the ordeal. Fr. Benjamin went back home to his family last year. He was saddened that he could not take his nephews and nieces out on a drive. For their own safety they had to stay within their homes. Father was very surprised about how safe we all feel in rural Wisconsin. I have often taken that relative security for granted. I think we were all very grateful for his inspiring preaching of the gospel and sharing his the struggles and needs that the Catholic Churches face in his home country.

Thank you to all who generously gave a donation to the Oblates of the Blessed Virgin Mary that will go toward their new seminary in Nigeria. If you would still like to give a donation, please make the check out to your home parish and designate that it is for the Nigerian Mission collection.

Congratulations to Msgr. Healy

We congratulate Msgr. Gerard Healy on the 60th Anni-versary of his Ordination to the Priesthood and his life of service to God and the Church. The following information is from the June 17 edition of the Catholic Herald.

Msgr. Healy was born in the County Longford, Ireland, on April 23 to William and Margaret Healy. The youngest of five children, young Gerard was raised on the family farm. His elementary education began at the Legga National School. His secondary education was at St. Mary’s Apostolic Secondary School in Moyne, Ireland.

It was toward the end of his education at St. Mary’s that Msgr. Healy definitely heard the call to serve our Lord in the priesthood. From there he entered St. John’s College and Seminary in Waterford, Ireland. It was quite common for young men and women to serve as missionaries in different parts of the world. Father Healy made his commitment to the Diocese of Madison. He was ordained a priest on June 18, 1961, at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Waterford, Ireland. Father Healy served at Our Lady of Assumption Parish, Beloit, St. Dennis Parish in Madison, and he helped to estab-lish and oversaw the construction of St. Stephen Church in Clinton in the early 1970’s. In 1975 Fr. Healy became the pastor of St. Mary’s in Bloomington and served here until 1979. Then he served at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Cross Plains until 1989 and at St. Ann Parish in Stoughton until his retirement in 2013. May God continue to bless him!

Reflection

“…as a matter of equality your abundance at the pre-sent time should supply their want, so that their abundance

may supply your want, that there may be equality.” - 2 CORINTHIANS 8:14

One of the tenants of living a grateful and generous lifestyle is giving without expecting anything in return. It is important that we not only grow, nurture and share our gifts; but that we also teach our children and encourage others to do the same. This is the communal aspect of our Catholic faith. We are the “Body of Christ”. We are called to be dependent on each other and not live in isolation.

Saint Irenaeus- June 28

June 28 is the feast of Saint Irenaeus, a second century bishop who was well known for his opposi-tion to Gnosticism. He is believed to have studied under Saint Polycarp, a disciple of Saint John the Evangelist. Although, it is uncertain when Irenaeus was born or much about of his early life.

During the persecution of Marcus Aurelius, Irenaeus was a priest of the Church of Lyons and he was later named its Bishop. The Church is fortunate that Irenaeus was involved in many of its controversies in the second century. He was tremendously protective of apostolic teaching and desired to win over his opponents rather than to prove them in error.

As bishop of Lyons he was especially concerned with the Gnostics, who took their name from the Greek word for “knowledge.” Claiming access to secret knowledge imparted by Jesus to only a few disciples, their teaching was attracting and confusing to many Christians. After thoroughly investigat-ing the various Gnostic sects and their “secret,” Irenaeus showed to what logical conclusions their tenets led. These he contrasted with the teaching of the apostles and the text of Holy Scripture, giving us, in five books, a system of theology of great importance to subsequent times. Moreover, his work, widely used and translated into Latin and Armenian, gradually ended the influence of the Gnostics.

FEAST OF FAITH -

Preparation of the Gifts

The altar is prepared, the gifts are received. Several brief rites follow with accompanying prayers, some prayed silently by the priest and deacon and others said aloud. We call this part of the Mass the “preparation.” What kind of preparation is happening? First, the presider holds up the paten or bowl containing the hosts, and says words that Jesus must have said many times, since they derive from ancient Jewish meal pray-ers: “Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation!” We have brought forward our gifts, our offering to God, and now we acknowledge that they are not really ours—the gifts that we give are God’s gift to us. It is “through your goodness” that we have gifts to offer. It is significant that we offer not wheat and grapes, but bread and wine; “fruit of the earth and work of human hands.” Bread and wine are both God’s work, and ours. These preparatory rites also prepare us for what we are about to do in the Eucharist, a mystery in which divine and human meet; a holy collaboration in which our action is caught up into God’s divine plan. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. St. Charles Parish Council

Two years ago, the St. Charles Parish Council Policy was amended. It was decided that St. Charles should have a 9-member council. During this time, the redecoration project was under way and the current council members wanted to see the project completed. Then the pandemic hit, so again the membership amendment was postponed. Now as we are turning the corner on both of these matters, we are looking for nominations of active and dedicated St. Charles Parishioners to fill three positions on the council. You may nominate yourself or another parishioner, with their consent. The new members will start in June and hold a 3-year term. If more than three nominations are received, an election will be held. Please contact the St. Charles Parish office at 725-5595, for more information or for nominations.

Cemetery Fund

St. Charles and St. Mary’s Settlement Cemeteries are in need of donations for the upkeep of the sites. If you would like to make a donation, you may put it in the offertory collection or mail it to St. Charles, P.O. Box 166, Cassville, WI 53806. Please make the check out to the cemetery you want the fund to be applied to.

JESUS’ EXAMPLE OF HELPING OTHERS

In today’s second reading Paul offers a wonderful argument to his converts at Corinth for seeking to help those in need. He is dealing with a practical problem, arranging a collection for the poor of the church of Jerusalem; but as he often does, he develops an important teaching about Jesus to make his point.

After asking that they show their faith by generous gifts, he reminds them of the “gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). In the Incarnation our Lord assumed our human nature, certainly becoming poor for one who is God. The ultimate gracious act of this poverty was going to the cross with all its terrible suffer-ings. By this act of poverty we definitely become rich. Now our sins can be forgiven; we can share in the very life of God through the sacraments; we can attain eternal salvation! Copyright © J. S. Celebrate Life

In their statement “Catholics in Political

Life” (June 2004), the United States bishops said the following: “We need to continue to teach clearly and help other Catholic leaders to teach clearly on our unequivocal commitment to the legal protection of human life from the moment of conception until natural death. Our teaching on human life and dignity should be reflected in our parishes and our educational, health care and human service ministries.

“We need to do more to persuade all people that human life is precious and human dignity must be defended. This requires more effective dialogue and engagement with all public officials, especially Catholic public officials. We welcome conversation initiated by political leaders them-selves.” - Priests for Life website
