7 reasons why you should make the switch
Moving Forward
02
When Microsoft announced that support for Windows XP would cease
in April 2014, the industry asked why? Why go through the expense and
effort of changing something that works well enough already?
The answer lies in how the transition to Microsoft Windows 7 will deliver
new value and benefits to ATM deployers. As with any new technology,
there will be opportunities for early deployers and clever organizations
to gain competitive advantage over their rivals.
Here are the TOP SEVEN
REASONS for UPGRADING
TO WINDOWS 7 for ATMS.
03
When Microsoft stops supporting Windows XP the security
resource and investment allocated to work on XP will also cease,
but the hackers and criminals won’t. It is far preferable and
indeed far more responsible to implement an operating
system that is subject to a significant and continuous
investment in security than one which has no response
available to new criminal attacks.
Expanded security solutions in Windows 7 include:
+ Tighter control of process to process communication, using a technique
known as Session Zero Isolation, that makes it harder for malware to exploit process and session boundaries.
+ NCR’s Windows 7 solution includes a Keyboard Filter that prevents
unauthorized access to keyboard functions such as “ctrl-alt-delete” and prevents malicious or accidental access to the desktop, pop-up menus, etc.
+ Continued security updates, patches and hotfixes.

MAINTAIN A HIGH STANDARD
04
Windows 7 is emerging as the corporate standard operating system across the world.
For banks that means two things:
2
{
It’s easier, faster and cheaper to test and deploy with a single operating system. As office systems migrate to Windows 7, those who migrate their ATM channel as well will be at an advantage.
1
{
Support operations and helpdesks will be far more efficient within a standardized environment and with the demise of Windows XP, Windows 7 offers that environment.
2
ENJOY THE BENEFITS
of Unity Across your Enterprise
By mid-2011 over 65%
of businesses running
Windows had either
migrated, or were in the
process of migrating to
Windows 7 across their
enterprises.
05
3
In the short term, some IT
managers or directors might
consider a migration to
Windows 7 to be too expensive
and staying with Windows XP
could save them cost.
But, is
this really true?
CUT COST
by Planning for the Long Term
A short term initiative to SAVE MONEY on
license fees COULD END UP having significant
LONG TERM COST PENALTIES.
A: There are consequences of staying on XP that could attract
considerably higher costs than switching to Windows 7.
+ Ensuring the security and regulatory compliance of an ATM network will
become very challenging as PCI PA-DSS compliance becomes significantly more complex over time and eventually unattainable.
A: The cost of maintaining XP based application software will
increase sharply once Microsoft withdraws XP support.
+ Most application specialists will have turned their attention to and
developed their skill base toward Windows 7 and so the supply of XP resources will become more limited and more expensive. The same applies to the ability to deploy new functionality and stay competitive. Hardware, drivers and software for XP will all become increasingly scarce and

Windows 7 will deliver this with several
new features, including:
+ Single touch and multi touch capabilities + Swipe gestures
+ Power to issue gesture based instructions + Ability to scroll through an on-screen accounts
statement
+ Object selection, rotation, zoom in, zoom out,
scrolling and gesture functions
IMPROVE
the Consumer Experience
With
consumer experience
being the
key
competitive
differentiator
between retail banks,
Windows 7
gives deployers the
chance
to
gain
an
edge
in the
market
.
The user interface of an
ATM has not substantially
changed in almost 25 years.
However, consumers in the
early 21
stcentury are used
to more sophisticated user
experiences and expect more.
For ATM and other self-service
deployers this is one of the
biggest value adds in
Windows 7.

Key performance upgrades:
+ Windows 7 takes less time to install than Windows XP; this is enabled by its
installation technology, known as ImageX.
+ ImageX allows you to easily recover the active partition by remotely
re-imaging from the recovery image. This was not supported by Microsoft in Windows XP, but with ImageX, Windows 7 has a tool to make this easy.
+ The inclusion of ImageX within Windows 7 reduces the numbers of products
and vendors that you must manage since relying on third party applications for this functionality is no longer necessary.

Windows XP was designed and built around last century’s technology, and is no longer able to support many of the latest IT industry hardware innovations. Windows 7 is required to take advantage of today’s cutting edge technologies, right down to the component level such as motherboards, chip sets and storage devices. As ATM hardware continues to evolve, an up-to-date and fully supported operating system is required to leverage these advances and provide ever-better consumer experiences, operational efficiency and security.

BENEFIT
from Stability and Longevity
Microsoft will be supporting Windows 7 until at least 2020.
This period of stability and longevity is important in the ATM business where significant capital equipment purchases are expected to take several years to depreciate prior to ultimate replacement. Windows 7 is the ideal solution because of support promised for at least six years beyond the end of life of Windows XP.
Any operating system that cannot remain in support for at
least a full lifecycle of ATM purchase and depreciation

Windows 7 offers many compelling
reasons to migrate from Windows XP.
The clock is ticking towards the end of
life of Windows XP, and so now is the
time to begin the process of migrating
towards the benefits that Windows 7
can offer.
