Maths and Numeracy

Measuring time We are going to start learning about measure, and this week we are going to be measuring time. Start by watching this video as a little introduction.

https://www.youtube.com /watch?v=ITItALp58xU

Now watch the video lesson with Mr Harper on the Home Learning Sway page (the link to this video and all home learning videos is under the Home Learning Videos section below this grid) which will explain what we’re doing in this lesson. For this lesson you’ll need something that can measure seconds and minutes, a stopwatch app on a phone or tablet will work well. Here’s a link to an online stopwatch that might be useful. Online Stopwatch.

If you want to challenge yourself then you can

Measuring time What can you do in a minute?

For today’s activity we’re going to be thinking about what we can do in a minute. We’ll be using the What can you do in a minute? Sheet that has been emailed out today. For each activity on the sheet, you need to first estimate (make a guess) how many times you’ll be able to complete the activity in one minute. Once you’ve written down your estimate then you need to time yourself completing the activity. Remember you don’t need to print out the sheet, you can write the results on a piece of paper instead.

Recognising and ordering numerals

Today and tomorrow, we are going to be practising recognising numbers from 1 to 100.

Start by having a look on this BBC Learns web page. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bite size/articles/z2xfxbk Follow the instructions on the page and see how you get on, it might be a little tricky, but I know you can all do it! At the end of the page if you want to keep going you can try the Karate Kats Maths Game. After this, it’s time for the Caterpillar Ordering game. Follow the link below to access the game. Once you’re on the game press the ordering button and then choose the challenge that’s right for you.

• 1-10 is mild. • 1-20 is spicy. • 1-100 is hot.

Recognising numerals to 100

Today’s lesson is a video lesson with Mr Harper on the Home Learning Sway page which will explain what we’re doing in this lesson. Watch and follow along with the video, it might seem a little tricky at first, but you’ll all do brilliantly! Once you’ve watched the video it’s time to go on a number walk.

After you’ve finished the video lesson it’s time for this week’s Sumdog challenge. The challenge is a mixture of questions about time, addition, subtraction and numbers to 100. You’ll get 100 points when you’ve completed the challenge, give it your best shot!

Sumdog Quiz

For today’s Maths we’ve got a little Sumdog quiz. This is just a quick quiz to see how everyone’s

getting on with time. Don’t worry if you don’t get all the answers right, it’s all about trying your best and I already know you are all Maths superstars! There’s some reading in these questions, if you find the words tricky you can press the speaker button and Sumdog will read the question to you.

choose some more activities around the house and estimate and then measure how long they take you.

After you’ve completed and measured your own activity then there are some fun Measuring Time games on Education City. We have also put 3 other time activities on

Education City to help you revise work from last term. You can play them any time this week.

If you choose an option and it’s too tricky or too easy just go back and try another. Good luck!

Today we are going to draw a polar bear. Click on the link below and follow the video. https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=PTfd6JhVFYE

Interdisciplinary Learning It’s been quite cold, icy and snowy in Edinburgh, a bit like in a polar climate zone! Today and tomorrow, we’re going to be carrying out some science experiments to do with water and ice.

For today we’re going to freeze some water. For this you’ll need a small plastic tub, or dish or an ice-cube tray. If you want to, it might be fun to freeze some toys in the ice so that we

Interdisciplinary Learning Today we’re going to try and melt some ice and save any toys that are frozen in the ice!

The first thing you need to do is get 3 dishes or bowls and put a block of ice into each one.

Then we are going to... 1. Put some warm water on one of the blocks of ice. 2. Put some salt onto the second block of ice. 3. For the last block of ice we are not going to put anything on it.

Before you start the experiment. Have a think, which ice cube will melt first? Which one will melt last? Write down what you think will happen or tell an adult your idea. At the end of the experiment look

Interdisciplinary Learning

For today’s lesson we are going to be learning about the adaptations penguins have that help them live in polar regions. Not all penguins live in polar regions, but a lot of them do. Lots of animals have special adaptations to help them survive in the places they live. An adaptation is a special body part, body covering or behaviour that helps the animals survive - like the waterproof feathers penguins have that keep them dry or the thick fur polar bears have that keeps them warm. Watch this video which tells you about penguins from all over the world. https://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=O8qilxaBR20 Now we’re going to draw our own penguin! You can

Music

Listen to the Scottish nursery rhyme, Katie Bairdie. You can listen to it as many times as you like.

The song has some words you might not know...

coo aboot mou wasnae dainty toddled naw didnae

aye havenae

Talk to an adult about what these words are Scottish for.

To help you remember the song words, draw a music map with the animals in the order they are mentioned in the song and some words. Like this...

can rescue them tomorrow in our melting ice experiment. Here’s a Lego person who I’ve frozen in ice ready for tomorrow’s experiment!

For tomorrow we need three blocks of ice, they don’t need to be large, 3 ice cubes will be perfect.

What do you know about ice? What is ice made from? What happens to ice when it warms up? If you’re not sure about any of these things, then this video might answer your questions!

back at your ideas and see if you were correct, don’t worry if you were not, science is all about making mistakes and finding things out!

Interdisciplinary Learning In our topic, we are thinking about how animals are adapted to the climate where they live. The climate in the arctic regions is very cold.

Open up the worksheet (you do not need to print it) and try to think of at least one polar animal that has each adaption).

draw your penguin with whatever you like, pens, pencils, crayons or paint. Try to include as much detail as you can and try to include some

adaptations on your penguin, like their webbed feet which help to grip on the ice, or their flippers which help them to swim fast. Here’s a draw along video that you might want to use, remember you can pause it at each step to give you time to follow along. If you would prefer to draw your own penguin without the video, then that’s great too!

https://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=Coqgz3PttqY Cosmic Kids Yoga Here’s a Pedro the Penguin yoga video. Enjoy the penguin adventure!

Can you remember the words to the song and sing along, using the music map to help you?

Keep practising and when you feel confident, if you would like, you can send us a video of you singing it! We would love to see it.
