A special thank you to the State Fund Committee for their recommendation and

support of our Sandoval County 4-H Shooting Sports Program.

Through their effort, The NRA Foundation board of trustees has grant awarded

$3,500 to our program with archery equipment and small-bore equipment.

It takes a lot of partners to make many programs successful—their support and

contribution will enhance the youth skills, mastery, and sportsmanship.

Shooting Sports

Sandoval County 4-H Shooting Sports Practices

Archery, small-bore rifle (.22), and .22 pistol (Jr. and Seniors only) practice is open to all youth that have

en-rolled in the Shooting Sports projects. Unfortunately, we cannot offer shotgun because we do not have an

adult shotgun leader. Practice will take place at Del Norte Club; a DNGC signed waiver will be required. The

DNGC form is on their webpage or at sandovalextension.nmsu.edu

All youth interested in attending the practices must notify Steve Lucero by email

smlucero@nmsu.edu

.

Please indicate which dates so that we can set relays to comply with Covid guidelines.

Seniors interested in the State 4-H SS Competition must attend the April 24, 2021 practice for official targets

and scores, which will be submitted to the State 4-H office.

No Cloverbuds allowed—Sorry!

Shooting Sports State Championships

Due to Covid 19 and current NM Department of Health orders and New Mexico State Uni-versity directives, an alternative to our State 4-H Shooting Sports Championships will be offered to our 4-H Senior members for a state competition and qualify teams for the Na-tional 4-H Shooting Sports Championships if they happen. All 4-H activities will follow all regulations and restrictions for their specific county dealing with Covid safe practices and will be adhered to without alterations.

Teams will complete the course of fire exactly as it is stated in the rules, which are located at https://

aces.nmsu.edu/4h/ in their home county qualifier and will submit targets or scores depending on the discipline to the State 4-H Office by May 3, 2021.

In the event that we can gather in groups of 20, in a specified location, we will take the top four (4) teams in each discipline this summer to determine the top teams and determine final team placings. If current health restrictions prevent us from being face to face, all mail in scores will be used for team and individual awards as well as deter-mination of national teams. All individual awards will be taken from scores sent in and not at the “finals” to allow all participants to be eligible.

Cost for the Alternative contest is $10.00/participant/contest entered with a maximum of two contests.

New Mexico 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification

We are starting to plan small trainings around the state in counties that are yellow or green that can gather using safe Covid practices.

As mentioned before, all the initial training over history, introduction to 4-H shooting sports, creating high quality programs, and risk management is now available on-line through Zing-books at a cost of $20.00 to access that portion of the training. Leaders can go to: www.4-hshootingsportscollege.com if they want to get started, but will still need, in addition to the on-line portion, the eight hour “hands-on” training to be certified that will cost an ad-ditional $50.00 per individual (this keeps the cost the same as previous years $70.00 total).

If your certification is running out this year, we will have a waiver for another year due to current health circum-stances.

If you are interested in becoming a Shooting Sports Certified Leader, please contact Steve Lucero at smlucero@nmsu.edu

Navigating Communication in a Virtual World

How is communication different in today’s virtual world? Has it changed how we communicate?

As our world becomes increasingly virtual, we need to be more mindful of how we participate in this ever-changing environment. Senior 4-H members please come join us March 10,17, and 24 at 6:30 pm for interactive and fun 1-hour sessions, as we begin to understand online and virtual communication. With the aid of activities, games, and dis-cussions we hope to enhance your communication awareness in navigating today’s world. Youth Mental Health First Aid—Free Course!

Suicide is the third leading cause of death in young people between the ages of 10 and 24, resulting in about 4,600 lives lost in the U.S. each year. (CBS News via Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) As professionals who work with youth, you can make a difference by taking Youth Mental Health First Aid. This course is currently being offered at no cost to participants.

This opportunity is not limited to agents. All individuals who work with youth are strongly encouraged to take this course, including volunteers, leaders, teachers, parents, and anyone who is interested in learning more about this subject area. Currently this course is scheduled virtually for April 1from 12-5:30, and is open for 10 seats. Additional dates will continually be added, so please be on the lookout for those.

Please contact Charly Fisher at cfisher@nmsu.edu if you’d like to sign up for the April course or have questions.

Virtual Citizen Washington Focus (CWF) 2021

National 4-H is offering Citizenship Washington Focus virtually for 2021.

Here is information on how the virtual pro-gram is set up.

Schedule

Instead of a full week of CWF and having young people online for multiple hours for multiple days in a row, CWF is offering a virtual, five-week, once-a-week program. So for instance, instead of signing up for a particular week of CWF, delegations can sign up for the Monday track of CWF. The sessions are a two-three hour session each night, which still allows for any school and/or job obligations that youth may have, while also still giving an option to participate in this year’s programming. National 4-H is currently planning for tracks on Sundays and Mondays.

Theme

The theme of this year’s CWF is Youth Voice. How can young people use their voice to affect change throughout your community, state, and country? CWF will explore topics such as Civil Discourse, Informed Decision Making, Media Literacy, and ways to assess the needs in your surrounding community to identify the best ways for young people to af-fect change. CWF will also introduce their enhanced Action Plan process called the Dolphin Tank (like the hit show Shark Tank, but with less bite!) CWF is extremely excited about being able to offer a virtual alternative this year!

Pricing and registration

The price for CWF 2021 is $250. This includes a CWF box from our 4-H Mall/Shop 4-H that is a small goody box that your young people can use throughout the program.

Registration will be limited to the same delegation structure as it has been in the past for CWF. Delegation sizes will be capped at 30 for now. The age range for virtual CWF will be the same as before, ages 14-19. If you want to participate

please contact us for the registration form which will require a down payment of $100 per delegate made payable to the State 4-H Office by March 26.

As more information is available from National 4-H Council we will share it via email. Contact Nicole or Steve if you have any questions.
