Learn to fulfill a company’s strategic vision from a
human resource perspective. With UC Berkeley Extension’s
Certificate Program in Human Resource Management, you
acquire up-to-date strategies and skills to develop and present
initiatives that align with your company’s business goals. You
delve into subjects such as employee engagement, recruitment,
retention, training and total compensation to develop a
high-performing operating environment.
Our instructors are experienced HR professionals who illustrate
the curriculum’s theoretical knowledge with real-world examples.
Whether working at a corporation, government agency,
nonprofit or small business, you gain a strong foundation of
current HR best practices to develop, implement and administer
a company’s policies, programs and procedures.
The curriculum is overseen by an advisory board of business
and education leaders and approved by the University of
California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business, ensuring your
education is relevant and current. Courses are approved for
recertification credits by the HR Certification Institute and help
you to complete the Professional in Human Resources or Senior
Professional in Human Resources Exams.

Prerequisites for Admission
If you are new to the field, you should take Essentials of Human Resources BUS ADM X450.1; a bachelor’s degree is highly recommended.
Curriculum Requirements
The curriculum comprises 8 required core courses and a minimum of 2 electives for a total of 18 semester units (273 hours of instruction). Candidates must pay a nonrefundable certificate registration fee. All coursework must be completed within five years of commencing certificate coursework. Because requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study, we recommend completing the curriculum in a timely fashion.

Completion Requirements
You must take all courses for a letter grade. To receive the certificate, you must maintain an overall minimum 2.5 grade point average (GPA), with a grade of C or better in each course. A Certificate With Distinction will be awarded to those who complete the certificate with a GPA of 3.7 or higher.
Elizabeth Arredondo de Pina has her
eyes set on being a vice president of human resources, and thanks to the Certificate Program in Human Resource Management, she is well on her way. Arredondo de Pina cites her instructors in helping her succeed. “I enjoyed all of my instructors, in particular Terri Lynn Cardona and Jun Cruzat,” she says. “Both are fascinating—great instructors who know how to teach while captivating their students with their energy, knowledge and valuable experience. Terri provided me with some professional advice and guidance, and as a result, I received a promotion to HR generalist at work.”

Sujatha Pakki draws from an extensive human
resources background in her native India to excel in the certificate. The in-depth curriculum and knowledgeable, accessible instructors are a perfect fit for her needs. After you complete the first course in the curriculum, you should register for the Certificate Program in Human Resource Management at extension. berkeley.edu/cert/register.html. Click on the More Information button next to the certificate title to begin the registration process. Complete your student account profile if you are a new student, and pay the nonrefundable certificate registration fee.
You may enroll in individual courses without registering for the Certificate Program in Human Resource Management.
