Entrance hymn

e that know the Lord is gracious, ye for whom a corner-stone stands, of God elect and precious, laid that ye may build thereon, see that on that sure foundation ye a living temple raise,

towers that may tell forth salvation, walls that may re-echo praise.

2.Living stones, by God appointed each to his allotted place,

kings and priests, by God anointed, shall ye not declare his grace? Ye, a royal generation,

tell the tidings of your birth, tidings of a new creation

to an old and weary earth. 3.Tell the praise of him who called you

out of darkness into light,

broke the fetters that enthralled you, gave you freedom, peace and sight: tell the tale of sins forgiven,

strength renewed and hope restored, till the earth, in tune with heaven, praise and magnify the Lord.

TEXT: Cyril Argentine Alington (1872–1955); MUSIC: ‘Hyfrydol’, melody by Rowland Hugh Pritchard (1811–87).

Collect for the Second Sunday after Pentecost

Let us pray.

We pray in silence.

LORD OUR GOD, you are always more ready to bestow your good gifts

upon us than we are to seek them, and more willing to give than we desire or deserve: in our every need, grant us the first and best of all your gifts, the Spirit who makes us your children; we ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Old Testament

A reading from the First Book of Samuel.

hen all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, ‘You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; ap-point for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations’. But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, ‘Give us a king to govern us’. Samuel prayed to the LORD, and the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Listen to the voice of the people in

all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me

O

(5)

from being king over them. Just as they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so also they are doing to you. Now then, listen to their voice; only — you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.’ So Samuel reported all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking

him for a king. He said, ‘These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horse-men, and to run before his chariots. He will take your male and female slaves, and the best of your cattle and donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take one-tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the LORD

will not answer you in that day.’

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, ‘No! but we are determined to have a king over us, so that we also may be like other nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles’.

Samuel said to the people, ‘Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the king-ship’. So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal. There they sacrificed offerings of well-being before the LORD,

and there Saul and all the Israelites rejoiced greatly.

Psalm

will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, with my whole heart :

even before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy Name, because of thy loving-kindness and truth :

for thou hast magnified thy Name, and thy Word, above all things. When I called upon thee, thou heardest me :

and enduedst my soul with much strength. All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord :

for they have heard the words of thy mouth. Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord :

that great is the glory of the Lord.

For though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly : as for the proud, he beholdeth them afar off.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, yet shalt thou refresh me :

thou shalt stretch forth thy hand upon the furiousness of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

(6)

The Lord shall make good his loving-kindness toward me : yea, thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever;

despise not then the works of thine own hands.

TEXT: Psalm 138, Confitebor tibi; MUSIC: plainsong psalm tone III with the 2nd ending.

Epistle

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians.

ut just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture — ‘I believed, and so I spoke’ — we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is pre-paring us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is tempo-rary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

II Corinthians 4·13 – 5·1

Hear the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gradual hymn

ight the good fight with all thy might;

Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right; lay hold on life, and it shall be

thy joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race through God’s good grace, lift up thine eyes, and seek his face;

life with its way before us lies;

Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.

B

(7)

Cast care aside; upon thy guide; His boundless mercy will provide; trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove Christ is its life, and Christ its love. Faint not nor fear, his arms are near; he changeth not, and thou art dear; only believe, and thou shalt see that Christ is all in all to thee.

TEXT: John Samuel Bewley Monsell (1811–75); MUSIC: ‘Duke Street’, melody attributed to John Hatton (d. 1793).

Gospel

HE CROWD CAME TOGETHER AGAIN, so that Jesus and his disciples could

not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone out of his mind’. And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the de-mons he casts out dede-mons’. And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.

‘Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have for-giveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin’ — for they had said, ‘He has an unclean spirit’.

(8)

Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you’. And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’

Mark 3·20–35

Sermon

Given by the Reverend Rae Reinertsen, the Cathedral Pastor.

Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

E BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven

and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the people

We pray for strength to follow Jesus.

Saviour, we hear your call.

Help us to follow.

(9)

Jesus said: ‘Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant’. We pray for Kay our Archbishop and for bishops Jeremy and Kate,

and for Archbishop Geoffrey of Adelaide, Primate of Australia. May we be servants of Christ to the world.

Saviour, we hear your call.

Help us to follow.

Jesus said: ‘Unless you change

and become humble like little children, you can never enter the kingdom of heaven’. We pray for this Cathedral Church,

for all who work and worship here,

and especially for the work and fellowship of the Friends of the Cathedral. May the kingdom of heaven be known in our word and action.

Saviour, we hear your call.

Help us to follow.

Jesus said: ‘Happy are the humble;

they will receive what God has promised’. As our Saviour had no place to call his own and sent out his disciples with nothing,

we pray for those who sleep rough on our city’s streets this winter for their protection and security.

May the kingdom of justice and peace extend from generous hearts to all in need.

Saviour, we hear your call.

Help us to follow.

Jesus said: ‘Be merciful as your Father is merciful; love your enemies and do good to them’.

We pray for mercy upon our world challenged by a global pandemic; we pray for healing for the peoples of India,

and for all places where infections are resurgent, for equality of access to vaccinations in all countries; we pray for the people of Victoria in lockdown.

We pray for the fragile ecosystems and endangered species of God’s good earth, that human instinct to protect might outweight that to plunder.

May the good news of salvation be found in acts of mercy and love. Saviour, we hear your call.

(10)

Jesus said: ‘Love one another, as I love you; there is no greater love than this,

to lay down your life for your friends’.

We continue to pray for the peoples of Myanmar amid a military coup,

for liberty for political prisoners and freedom for all the country’s many peoples, and we pray for stability for the people of the West African republic of Mali after its second military coup in the space of a year.

We pray for our State of Western Australia as tomorrow’s WA Day marks 192 years

since the proclamation of the Swan River Colony,

for reconciliation between the ancient peoples of the land and later comers, and for progress, prosperity and good government.

May our hearts and the whole world be freed from fear and ignorance. Saviour, we hear your call.

Help us to follow.

Jesus said: ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease’.

We pray for the lonely, the bereaved, the sick and the dying, especially for [those who are named],

and all who are on our hearts this morning. Saviour, we hear your call.

Help us to follow.

Jesus said: ‘Go to people everywhere and make them my disciples,

and I will be with you always, to the end of time’. We pray for ourselves,

for your Church, for all whom we remember before you, especially [those who are named].

Saviour, we hear your call.

Help us to follow.

God of mercy,

you know us and love us and hear our prayer:

keep us in the eternal fellowship of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen.

Greeting of peace

We are the body of Christ.

His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

Offertory hymn

aith overcomes! The light of Christ is shining, piercing the doubt and darkness of our world. Walking in trust, we find the way inclining

to follow in the footsteps of our Lord.

Faith overcomes! The truth of God, unfolding Wisdom and Word, in cosmic time and space, dwells in a single life for our beholding:

eternal glory in a human face.

Faith overcomes! In Jesus God is teaching, healing, forgiving, loving to the end;

to all who know him not his arms outreaching

from Calvary’s cross, our Shepherd and our Friend. Faith overcomes! The life of Christ, abundant,

spent and exhausted in the hour of death, bursts from the tomb in mystery triumphant, makes us alive through his own Spirit’s breath. Faith overcomes! Christ’s witnesses have spoken: we have not seen, yet now we dare believe in him is freedom, peace and joy unbroken, a gift to share with all who will receive.

(12)

Faith overcomes! In Jesus’ love abiding,

we yield ourselves to follow his commands, willing to suffer for his name, confiding

our needs and hopes and fears into his hands.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

T IS RIGHT TO PRAISE YOU, faithful God,

always and everywhere,

for with your only begotten Son and life-giving Spirit,

you are the one true God from everlasting to everlasting. At the dawn of time you wrought from nothing

a universe of beauty and splendour, bringing light from darkness

and order from chaos.

You formed us, male and female, in your image, and endowed us with creative power.

We turned away from you but you did not abandon us. You called us by name and searched us out,

making a covenant of mercy,

giving the law, and teaching justice by the prophets. And so we praise you,

joining with your faithful people of every time and place, singing the eternal song:

Sanctus & Benedictus

anctus, sanctus, sanctus Holy, holy, holy

HEN THE FULLNESS OF TIME WAS COME,

you sent your Son, to be born of Mary. Bright image of your glory,

he learnt obedience to you in all things, even to death on a cross,

breaking the power of evil,

freeing us from sin, and putting death to flight. You raised him from death,

exalting him to glory, and the new day dawned. On the night he was betrayed

your Son Jesus Christ shared food with his friends, his companions on the way.

While at table he took bread, blessed, and broke it,

and giving it to them, said:

‘Take, eat; this is my body.’ He took a cup of wine,

and, giving thanks, he gave it to them, and said, ‘This is my blood of the covenant,

which is poured out for many. Do this in remembrance of me.’

Therefore, living God, as we obey his command, we remember his life of obedience to you, his suffering and death,

his resurrection and exaltation,

and his promise to be with us for ever. With this bread and this cup

we celebrate his saving death until he comes.

deacon Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ Church Mass, Philip Matthias (b. 1954)

B

(14)

Accept, we pray, our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and our celebration that all who eat and drink at this table

may be strengthened by Christ’s body and blood to serve you in the world.

As one body and one holy people,

may we proclaim the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord,

through whom, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all glory is yours, eternal God, now and for ever.

Christ Church Mass, Philip Matthias (b. 1954)

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray.

UR FATHER IN HEAVEN, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

As this broken bread was once many grains,

which have been gathered together and made one bread:

so may your Church be gathered

from the ends of the earth into your kingdom.

Fortunately, the Covid-19 situation and restrictions have lessened, and the committee now welcomes your membership renewal fees, due from 1 May 2021.

General

As Covid-19 curtailed many activities last year, the committee is currently planning Friends’ functions which it is hoped will be enjoyable for members. Fundraising activities will con-tinue as before, primarily the Christmas stall and jam sales. These, together with Membership fees and donations are our main source of income, used to assist the Cathe-dral’s financial budget in keeping with the Friends’ constitution. Please note that membership does NOT require your participation in any fundraising activities, voluntary support is always welcome if offered but is not obligatory.

CHURCHSAFE TRAINING

Important to our Cathedral is ensuring it is a safe place for all. It is a diocesan requirement that any volunteer in leadership or working with children must have clearance for their ministry. Attending ChurchSafe Training is a requirement for clearance. Below are ChurchSafe training dates for 2021 and incorporates the new approach to training initia-tives and the introduction of protective behaviours education. In keeping with the Chapter’s commitment to safe ministry in the Cathedral, all Stewards, Servers, those in-volved in children and youth ministry, and volunteers in leadership roles, are to complete an initial ChurchSafe training workshop and any regular updates to keep up-to-date with current legislation.

Training venues are throughout the Diocese and include: • Saturday 3 July — 1.00–5.30 pm — Parish of Lakelands

• Saturday 28 August — 1.00–5.30 pm — Parish of South Perth • Saturday 11 September — 1.00–5.30 pm — Parish of Karrinyup
