The Department of Educational Leadership at Saint Joseph’s University grants a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership. The MS in Educational Leadership requires 36 graduate credits. Certifications are also offered in Principal Certification, Curriculum Supervisor Certification, and Supervisor of Special Education Certification.

Philosophy

Saint Joseph’s University Educational Unit is dedicated to preparing exemplary teachers, educational leaders, and educational researchers.

Flexibility is provided to attain the Master’s degree, Principal Certification, and/or Curriculum Supervisor Certification; or, a combination of certifications within the Master’s degree. Course requirements are noted.

Application Deadlines

Saint Joseph’s University operates on a rolling admissions basis for graduate applications. This means that documents can be submitted to the Office of Graduate Operations at any time throughout the year for admission consideration.

Application Requirements for Program Plans One and Two

Program Plan One. Complete these application requirements for any of the following programs: Master’s Degree, Curriculum Supervisor Certification, and Special Education Supervisor programs.

A completed Saint Joseph’s University graduate application.

Official sealed transcript(s) of undergraduate/graduate coursework.

3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) in undergraduate work.

Valid teaching certificate. If no certifications, then a teaching certificate is not required.

Five years full-time teaching experience (by the time the degree is awarded).

Personal statement – a letter of intention outlining the candidate’s professional goals and educational objectives for attending the program of their choice.

Two letters of recommendation.

Program Plan Two. Complete these application requirements for the Principal Certification program; and, if the Principal Certification program will be gained in conjunction with a Master’s Degree, Curriculum Supervisor Certification, and/or Supervisor of Special Education, complete these requirements instead of the Program Plan One requirements.

*Please note that if you do not initially apply for a Principal Certification and later decide to gain this certificate, then you will have to reapply and add numbers 6 and 7 below to your original application.

• Essay concerning how principals shape learning in their schools.

• Resume that includes evidence of leadership potential (other leadership roles).

• Applicant’s educational philosophy.

• A written description of a problem based learning activity.

• Personal statement—a letter of intention outlining the candidate’s.

professional goals and educational objectives for attending the program of their choice.

Tuition and Affordability

Tuition is set per credit hour; most courses are three credits. Tuition rates are effective for the calendar year beginning June 1. Students who study Graduate Education as a discipline or vocation receive an Educator’s tuition rate. This rate applies only to courses offered in Graduate Education. Please visit www.sju.edu/higherknowledge.

Tuition and Fees are subject to change by the Saint Joseph’s University Board of Trustees each calendar year.

Graduate Assistantships

Several departments offer assistantships which provide a stipend in addition to a tuition scholarship. Applications for assistantships should be made to the director of a particular program after admission.

Financial Assistance

Students applying for financial aid administered by Saint Joseph’s University must file for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In order to be eligible for federal assistance, the applicant must be enrolled on a half-time basis (at least 6 credits per semester) and be a citizen of the United States or have a permanent resident status.
