Block explained
IP-SAN, also known as Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI), is offered by utilising the two main protocols SCSI and TCP/IP to deliver limitless connectivity over distance while minimising performance loss.
This type of storage is provided by using iSCSI in target mode and is available to all client systems using iSCSI in initiator mode. Through iSCSI interface, clients can use portions of the target storage which presents block-based storage as locally native hard drives.
File explained
Network Attached Storage, better known as NAS, is a self-contained disk array, that is accessed by users without system configuration or installation. The data is stored in its entirety as a complete file, which makes this type of file-based storage easily viewed and accessed by multiple operating systems and users at any given moment.
Using network protocols such as SMB/CIFS and NFS provides the target arrays available storage to appear to clients as a file with system.
Supermicro, one of the world’s favourite server manufacturers with an established reputation for service and reliability, has created a storage solution that is ready for installation straight out of the box.
In this growing market storage demands are high and for this reason simplicity is key. Powered by industry leading storage applications Supermicro are able to offer the flexibility of having iSCSI and NAS via a range of solutions that are featured in this brochure.
For peace of mind the storage solutions are covered by three years advanced replacement warranty. The 2U and 4U nodes are bundled with redundant PSU (1+1) as standard. Further, redundancy can also be offered in the form of RAID 0,1,5,6,10, 50 and 60 through Supermicro hardware RAID controller with battery back up giving a volume array of greater than 2TB.
Remote Management with KVM-Over-LAN is provided as standard on all storage nodes using Supermicro’s intelligent management module that monitors onboard instruments such as temperature sensors, power status, voltage and fan speeds. It also includes remote access to the BIOS configuration and operating system that is CPU independent.
Connectivity is simple through Dual Gigabit LAN, making it easy to plug into an existing network.
Packed with highly efficient power supplies and energy efficient components it saves money by reducing energy costs for an organisation as storage needs grow.

RAID 5 stores data and then stores error-checking data from a given hard drive to another hard drive within the array thus allowing data recovery in the event of a single drive failure.
Pros:
■ Improved read
performance as data can be pulled together from all hard drives
■ Redundancy is
offered as data is duplicated to on more that on drive.
Cons:
■ Small performance
reduction when writing to numerous hard drives
■ Storage of one hard drive
will be missing of the total array volume as this is used towards data redundancy
■ The array will have data
loss in the event of a second drive failure thus it is vital to replace the first failed hard drive to secure the data.
RAID 6 stores data and then stores error-checking data from a given hard drive to another hard drive within the array thus allowing data recovery in the event of up to two drive failures.
Minimum hard drives needed = 2
Minimum hard drives needed = 3 Minimum hard drives needed = 4 RAID 0 stores small packets of data across all
available hard drives within this array and none of this data is duplicated thus offering storage across all hard drives.
Pros:
■ Improved performance
as data can be pulled together from all hard drives
■ Complete storage is
offered on this array.
Cons:
■ A single hard drive
failure will destroy the entire array and cannot be recovered.
Minimum hard drives needed = 2
RAID 1 stores duplicate data across all available hard drives within an array resulting in data being more secure whilst available storage is reduced.
RAID explained
Pros:
■ Improved read performance
as data can be pulled together from all hard drives
■ Redundancy is offered as
data is duplicated on more than one drive.
Cons:
■ Small performance
reduction when writing to numerous hard drives
■ Storage is reduced to
half as identical data is duplicated across the array.
Pros:
■ Improved read
performance as data can be pulled together from all hard drives
■ Offers additional
redundancy in allowing for two simultaneous drive failures
■ Shorter rebuilding time
in the event of drive failures.
Cons:
■ Small performance reduction
when writing to numerous hard drives
■ Storage of two hard drives will
be missing of the total array volume as this is used towards data redundancy
■ The array will have data loss
