MTI Business Segment: Performance Minerals

Position: Electrical Technician

Location: North America | USA | Barretts, MT

The Specialty Minerals (SMI) segment produces and sells the synthetic mineral product precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), mines mineral ores and processes and sells natural mineral products, primarily limestone and talc. This segment's products are used principally in the paper, building materials, paint and coatings, glass, ceramic, polymer, food, automotive and pharmaceutical industries.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Technician at our Barretts, MT location. The Electrical Technician position is responsible for

Position Details:

1. Performs all repairs and installations in a safe and productive manner and is responsible or keeping safe work areas.

2. Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes. 3. Troubleshoots, repairs, and replaces process control instrumentation. 4. Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows

diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring.

5. Plans new or modified installation of electrical systems that minimize waste and comply with all electrical codes.

6. Replace control and distribution apparatus such as control switches and relays.

7. Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit. Pulls wiring through conduit. Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps.

8. Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.

9. Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels.

10. Connects power cables to equipment, such as electric range or motor, and installs grounding leads.

11. Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.

12. Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.

13. Reads and interprets equipment manuals, work orders, blueprints, building drawings, and electrical schematics to perform required maintenance and service.

14. Provides scheduled and emergency/unscheduled repairs of plant and equipment/systems. Communicates with others internal and external to the organization to obtain/provide information regarding equipment/system issues as needed.

15. Leads major repair projects to be completed by maintenance team, ensuring successful completion. Records pertinent labor information from work shift. 16. Performs preventative and predictive maintenance as required. Work safely

and maintain the safety of coworkers in work area. Able to climb ladders and stairs and work safely at heights.

17. Repairs faulty equipment or systems. 18. Cuts and welds steel structural members.

19. Drills holes for wiring and pulls or pushes wiring through opening. 20. Traces out short circuits in wiring.

21. Lifts, positions, and fastens objects such as wiring, conduit, and motors. 22. Performs minor repairs such as replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and

switches.

23. Maintains tools and equipment and keeps supplies and parts in order. 24. Disassembles defective electrical equipment, replaces defective or worn

parts, and reassembles equipment.

25. Cleans work area, machines, tools, and equipment.

26. Actively participates in and supports Operational Excellence activities, especially 5S and Standard Work

27. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Five (5) years experience in mill maintenance field. Electrical and instrumentation skills. Must be computer literate. Individual must have required electrician and mechanic tools. Journeyman or Industrial Electrical Certification or equivalent is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to understand and coordinate sequential task activities.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid and current State Drivers License. Electrical certification and licensing is required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is

occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

While performing the duties of this job, an employee is typically required to have the ability to exert physical strength throughout the work shift, coordinate movements, use repetitive motions, have the ability to operate mobile equipment, regularly stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, reach, crouch, kneel, lift, twist, push and pull throughout a work shift; work in confined spaces, have manual dexterity, lift materials weighing up to and including 50 pounds, select and use appropriate equipment/tools to accomplish job duties, read, write, listen, speak and understand English, follow all instructions and other oral/written information, visually inspect equipment/work area, complete paperwork and other documentation accurately, identify, analyze, troubleshoot and solve equipment/work area issues using judgment and mechanical/electrical knowledge and skills, react quickly as needed, use judgment to determine when additional resources are needed to address issues, communicate effectively with others, record labor distribution information from the work shift in writing and/or on a personal computer, be aware of oneself in relation to surrounding equipment, work independently and as a team with others, and use, monitor and adjust equipment and related processes. Must possess welding, fabrication, and flame cutting skills, knowledge of lubrication methods, and be able to repair power transmission equipment. Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic operated systems, read, understand and follow blueprints, building drawings, and electrical schematics.

Being under general supervision, the employee is expected to be self-directed, take initiative and be persistent when appropriate to accomplish necessary duties and complete required work without prompting from the supervisor. Additionally, the employee is expected to be adaptable/flexible to changing work assignments, perform multiple tasks at once, have a high level of integrity, dependability and self control to maintain composure, learn and memorize procedures, prioritize work, manage time effectively and efficiently, meet established deadlines, display a cooperative attitude and leadership, read, understand and follow all company, job specific and safety policies/procedures, and attend/use all required training.

Work Hours: Must have ability to work the shift/number of hours in which duties need to be accomplished, including overtime, holidays and weekends, as necessary. Call-ins may occur as needed.

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, an employee is typically exposed to dust, loud noise, high places, confined spaces, very low and/or bright light, and outside weather conditions. Primarily works alone but may work as part of a team working near others and works in close proximity with equipment.

Safety Equipment: Safety equipment typically required while performing the duties of this job include a personal lockout/tagout lock, ANSI approved hardhat and safety glasses with sideshields, safety shoes/boots with steel toe protection. Appropriate safety equipment is required when welding such as welding mask, and additional safety equipment is available for use if a situation arises where it becomes required depending on the assignment or if it is simply desired by the employee.

Safety Training: A new employee hired to perform the duties of this position is to be provided New Employee Training by a qualified individual, which consists of eight hours of classroom training and 16 hours of on the job training. It will include, but is not limited to, the following: forklift/mobile equipment operation and

certification/licensing, hazard communication, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, electrical safety, lock out/tag out, personal protective equipment, bloodborne pathogens, fire fighting/extinguishers, machine safety, confined spaces, reporting of hazardous conditions, accidents, injuries, near-miss and property damage incidents, evacuation/emergency procedures, first aid, back injury prevention, and job/work area procedures.

Upon transferring to perform the duties of this position for the first time an employee is to be provided New Task Training by a qualified individual until the employee adequately understands the contents of the training, which include job/work area procedures and related topics. Additionally, an employee must be provided further training if a job duty/task has changes that will affect the health and safety aspects of that employee’s position.

Additional refresher safety training will be required as management deems appropriate or as dictated by MSHA/OSHA regulations.
