The Assured Recovery™ Services Platform
There are many other questions that come to mind, particularly around the theme of multi-tenancy. The true challenge of the next wave of data recovery technology is whether you, the service provider, have the right platform to deliver a data protection service. It’s not about backup…it’s about you… providing assurance to your customers about the recovery of their systems and data. This is not an easy task unless these characteristics are built into the solution to begin with.
For Managed Services Providers, CA arcserve Unified Data Protection is a next generation backup and recovery solution built for services delivery in a way that improves margins and opens up new business opportunities. CA arcserve UDP’s Assured Recovery capabilities are based on a unified, scalable and service-oriented architecture with a broad MSP-designed feature set such as true global de-duplication, high availability, multi-site replication, Recovery Point Server Jumpstart and reporting.
CA arcserve UDP is designed for Managed Service Providers and enables you to meet and exceed your customers’ Service Level Agreements. In addition to a simple out-of-the-box experience, CA arcserve UDP also provides a fully documented set of APIs, making it easy to integrate with other 3rd party platforms or Remote Monitoring and Management solutions. The scalable architecture of the solution and its advanced features to manage and control Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) make it an ideal solution for service providers.
Service providers can easily design service offerings with a single vendor solution that offers a flexible licensing scheme. CA arcserve UDP’s centralized management capabilities translate into better use of resources, better cost control and margins, and a great platform on which to build in order to gain a competitive edge in the market. The solution offers many types of revenue opportunities (backup, replication, HA) and can also protect itself at the MSP site via tape and replication of backups.
MSP Unified Data Protection Solution Brief | 3
The data protection world has drastically changed in
the past few years. Protection and recovery of data and
systems has truly evolved to now be treated as an IT
service and many organizations are relying on external
partners, such as a Managed Service Provider, to help with
their strategy and infrastructure.
However, many current platforms in the market were never designed to be used by a service provider. Taking just any solution and making a service out of it ignores the many design considerations that have to be taken into account:
• Is the solution/platform rich enough in features to provide the necessary system and data protection and recovery services?
• Is the solution/platform easy to integrate or interface with? • Does it provide advanced reporting capabilities?
• How easily can it be deployed?
• What operational efficiency features does it offer?
CA arcserve UDP a service provider platform
CA arcserve UDP is a new solution built on thefoundation of very mature and proven technology, offering a seamless solution from endpoint to remote archive site.
CA arcserve UDP delivers comprehensive Assured Recovery for virtual and physical environments with a next generation unified architecture and an unmatched ease of use. This feature-rich solution en§ables organizations to scale their IT environments easily, while delivering against their recovery point and recovery time objectives, on-premise , off-on-premise or in the cloud. Traditional, overly complex backup policies are replaced by modern task-based data protection plans and deep integration with hypervisors to fully automate complex, repetitive tasks.
CA arcserve UDP is the first solution to combine industry-proven backup, replication, high availability and true global de-duplication technologies within one solution and unlike competitive products, does not require expensive professional services. CA arcserve UDP is based on a next generation unified architecture for both virtual and physical environments. Its unmatched breadth, ease of use, and Assured Recovery capabilities set it apart from other data protection solutions.
This unified solution offers innovative features such as: • Agentless backup for VMware & Hyper-V
(Windows & Linux VMs)
• Support for Physical systems (Windows & Linux) • Built-in replication and high availability
• True source side global deduplication • Migration of disk images to tape,
with granular restore from disk or tape • MSP-focused features and APIs
CA arcserve UDP Key Differentiators and Benefits Solution Breadth: CA arcserve UDP covers a broad spectrum of enterprise-level functionality typically found in multiple point solutions such as imaging, replication, and high availability, yet is easy to deploy, use and scale, on-premise or in the cloud, for a variety of virtual and physical platforms. Ease of Use: Its unified management, with its centralized reporting and deployment, simplifies data and system protection and recovery operations dramatically when compared to point solutions. It improves the operational efficiency of data and system protection recovery.
Automated DR/Assured Recovery: In combination with a broad set of features for deploying advanced data protection and recovery strategies, CA arcserve UDP enables the automated disaster recovery testing of business-critical systems, applications and data, without business downtime, or impact to production systems.

This capability allows users through their MSP to save their RPS data stores to a portable disk unit (like a small NAS for example) to seed a remote site. This can save significant bandwidth, time and cost to get a remote RPS server synchronized. In essence, this offline synchronization process accelerates the deployment of Recovery Point Servers and reduces (costly) data transfers.
This capability is ideal for environments with limited bandwidth or charge-by-the-usage connections. This is also perfect for service provider partners who will use CA arcserve UDP as part of their offering.
One additional benefit is the fact that data loss exposure can also be mitigated. Instead of waiting for a full synchronization to happen over the network, which can take many days in the case of larger datastores, this capability allows you to “catch up” after the copy to the remote server is complete. If the physical transfer of data with a portable disk device takes one day, you will only have one day of updates to catch up, and reduced exposure should something happen to your primary site. In addition, the solution supports public clouds (Amazon, Azure, Rackspace and others) who offer seeding services.

Focus Feature: Multi-Tenant Storage
This capability offers the ability to logically segregate user data within the RPS. Data is stored on a local Recovery Point Server and then replicated centrally (in a many-to-one fashion) using global source-based deduplication to a centralized RPS server.
That data is isolated logically on the server with encryption (256-bit AES encryption is supported) and security credentials that are required for administrators to access customers’ data. Access by customer RPS name can be used leveraging a separate folder structure.
Also, global de-duplication is applied across tenants, another source of operational efficiencies with a direct impact on storage costs. This makes CA arcserve UDP an ideal solution for MSPs when all tenant protection is managed by a single MSP partner as well as customers with departmental SLAs or requirements.

Focus Feature: CA arcserve MSP Program Overview
The CA arcserve MSP Program is designed toenable anyone that delivers data protection or availability services (whether on-premise, off-premise or to/in the cloud) to benefit from open & flexible monthly licensing.
The program is being widely adopted for the following uses:
On-premise managed services – MSPs managing end user IT infrastructures, including data
protection. They can manage this remotely via a WEB 2.0 interface or integrate with a number of existing Remote Monitoring & Management solutions on the market.
DR as a Service or Business Continuity as a Service – MSPs create a copy of an end user’s data/ systems in a second location (cloud). In the event of a disaster the MSP reverts to the copy of the system to either:
• Recover to portable media
• A new server at the second location to be shipped out
• Or to recover via the WAN.
Alternatively, an MSP could deliver a service where the end-user’s staff is redirected to the second site system in the event of a full disaster.
Protection of back end datacenters –Service Providers delivering hosted services need to protect the data and systems that deliver those services. Through per Server, VM, Socket or TB of protected data licensing, Service Providers implement varying levels of protection for their entire environment and achieve their SLA’s.
