~ Prayer to Saint Michael ~
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
132 Sacred Heart Parish Sunday, February 14, 2021
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
On Friday, May 14th, I met with Archbishop Nelson Perez to receive news that I welcome with great joy: the Archbishop has officially appointed me “Pastor” of Sacred Heart Parish!
As I told the Archbishop in our meeting, I am very happy at Sacred Heart, because of you, our wonderful and supportive parishioners! Bishop John McIntyre, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and the Regional Bishop for Chester County, will formally install me as your Pastor at the Noon Mass on Sunday, June 27th. I am looking forward to this special day!
After I met with the Archbishop on May 14th, later that afternoon I went to the 12th Annual Deborah Vandegrift Memorial Golf Tournament. The proceeds of this year’s parish golf out- ing are going to help our parish youth ministry program and the local food bank, Neighbor- hood Services. I would like to publicly thank parishioner Matthew Hillegass, who organized the event, and all of the parishioners who sponsored or volunteered at this important fund- raiser.
I ask for your prayers for me, that I may be the kind of priest and pastor that you deserve. I promise that I will try with the help of God’s grace to be a loving shepherd after the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and to strive always to be a good example of faithful discipleship. I love parish ministry because that is where the life of the Church is seen so powerfully: it is in the parish the Word of God is preached and the sacraments of faith are celebrated. The Pastor is called to be the spiritual father of the community and to make present the ministerial priest- hood of Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest.
In the Church’s understanding of priestly ministry, the priest should never function as some kind of independent agent. The priest is called to always act in communion with the local bishop who is in communion with the pope. A pastor is also to be a man of communion in his parish community: a sign and instrument of unity leading everyone closer to the Lord.
In his Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis has a beautiful descrip- tion of the Church that applies in a particular way to a parish community. He writes: “Being Church means being God’s people, in accordance with the great plan of his fatherly love.
This means that we are to be God’s leaven in the midst of humanity. It means proclaiming and bringing God’s salvation into our world, which often goes astray and needs to be en- couraged, given hope, and strengthened on the way. The Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven, and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel” (#114).
As we begin a new chapter in the history of our parish together, my hope is that we will continue to make present in our community this vision of the Holy Father’s for the Church.
May God bless you and Mary keep you.
